about accomodation for UNSW students:

realestate.com.au is the best site to look out for houses..cuz they have the biggest database..getting the house you want can be very competitive at times..and point system is implemented to determine who will get the house..

about the suburbs..it depends on a few factors:

price: randwick houses are more expensive than in kingsford, this is because it is nearer to supermarkets-namely coles/woolies..

so its important to have a good look at the campus map, and to know where would be the place you would have your classes..and it is better to enrol in classes where the venue are nearby..if not you would have to climb the !@#$%^&* university walk/basser steps (can be useful to slim down, lol)..

if you dont mind travelling, kingsford is ok..though the security is not as good as in randwick..and both kingsford and randwick have asian stores to get asian foodstuff..maroubra junction can be a very nice place to live in too..its pretty convenient over there..just like randwick..just that you will need to dip a blue travel ten which costs $1.36 (around there) to get to uni by bus..

about engineering courses:

unsw engineering just got ranked first (if you really want to talk about ranking) on 2008 gooduniversity guide..but unsw has been famous for its engineering..so if you like sydney..unsw is a good place to do engineering..

to other forumers: i can give advice on anything you would like to know about jpa scholarship-on whats covered/whats not/bonds and stuff..

all in all i think aus is a nice place! =)

QUOTE(y@m@d@_iToE @ Feb 4 2008, 12:37 AM)
hey guys... im kind of new here...
im going to aussie, sydney by 14feb...
studying in macquarie university..
i used to apply for uni's apartment, however its fully booked....
therefore i have to rent a room by myself,
i have browsed through those agent's website.
but i still prefer to take a look by myself before i sign up...
by the way, when im signing the agreetment, what are the term and conditions that i should pay attention at.
and will i be too late as i only look for accomodation when i reach there?
im going to study in macquarie uni, so any recommended place for me to stay, i have heard of north hyde and macquarie parkland.
so who will be studying in macquarie? i dont think many people study there.. aikss....  im going there by myself!!
*
as i have friends studying in mq, i have been there a couple of times..

have you tried muv? the macquarie university village..its quite ok i think..my friends are still staying there this year..so i think its pretty good..basically you share a house with 4 other ppl of same gender (i think so)..

price is fine..and there is a company supplying broadband service..if not wrong, its called startec..10gb for $30/40...i dont remember well..

i think for the first year can just stay in muv, its pretty convenient..can just walk to uni..and walk to the only place to get ur stuff-macquarie centre..haha...then you can start looking for house, if you want to..then you can avoid the peak period...which i personally think, rent might be jacked up!

good luck..getting to the city is about 45min..depending on the buses you take.. nod.gif

gave me a lot of idea and help!!

As long as you have a TFN, you can do it. Minimum investment is usually between $1000 and $5000, but you can start trading online for only $20 brokerage fee through discount brokers like CommSec and ETrade.
I'm looking at Colonial First State and Macquarie's fund products. However, the stock market is pretty volatile right now, so I'm really not ready to put that much into it (on a good run, you'd probably get around 12% p.a. return). If you're risk averse, high interest saving accounts are probably the most stable product right now. Interest rates are set to rise further, so it's definitely good. The only problem is rents will rise in conjunction with the rise in interest rates.
The general rule is the higher the risk, the higher the returns.

You can buy cooking pans anywhere, from cheap ones at discount stores to mid range KMart/Target variety to higher end ones from department stores like Myer/David Jones. Have you been to Supacenta at Kensington? They sell all kinds of homewares and furniture if you don't want to venture to Ikea Homebush. It's just 10 minutes from uni via the 302/303 bus.
*
Oo..i have tfn..are colonial first state and macquarie fund something like stocks? where i need to manage them on my own?

kmart/target would do then..haha..i havent been to supacenta but i would go there to scout for my stuff =)..hows the quality for the furniture like compared to ikea's?..

btw, since i am back in malaysia for 3 months, can i still keep my mobile phone number? rclxms.gif

i've got mine from MSL Travel, its situated at shop lot near PWTC.. specially catered for students..
by getting ticket from them, automatically get ISIC membership, kind of like student card for lots stuff at australia later, even given map and discounts guide..
the MSL staff quite friendly, but this my 1st time dealing with travel agent so its just my opinion smile.gif

oo..what flight ticket do you buy?

isn't it a bit too late to buy airtickets now?..........premium pricing, or full flights..........and you came back from sydney with a one way ticket?
*
i bought a jetstar ticket to go back this time..i bought a sale ticket from jetstar last year to come back..it was $250(tax included)..

QUOTE(mooze @ Feb 21 2008, 12:07 AM)
i suggest the MSL Travel Sdn Bhd, near PWTC.. got freebies like ISIC and Youth Hostel membership, travel tips, map, guide, etc.. though not sure still got ticket or not because myself i bought mine last week, got 6seats left for my flight date, luckily i came in to book the flight time..

Basic Season : 1jan-31jan; 14feb-6mar, 15mar-22may
Shoulder Season : 7mar-14mar; 23may-31may
Peak Season : 1feb-13feb

my flight 25feb(basic season), one way, KLIA to adelaide, RM2168
30KG luggage allowance
MAS, straight from KLIA to Adelaide.. the adelaide seniors told me its much cheaper if take transit (KLIA->Sydney->Adelaide).. since this is my first time, i dont wanna risk lost luggage, flight delay and also there's someone waiting there to pick me up.. smile.gif
*
kl-syd for MAS is around rm4400 return..>.<

maybe i should fly to brisbane first..then take the airasia X.. hmm.gif

cheapest method i think is take local flight to gold coast  then take air asia X to KL. melbourne -> goldcoast -> KL  about $400-$450, one way.
maybe cheaper if got one of those air asia cheap deals. maybe even cheaper if u buy return ticket....
not sure bout baggage limitations though
*
this is a good idea!..is airasia going to add kl-syd to one of its routes? hmm.gif

pangping1510, there is another possible route, aint direct
KL>BRUNEI>SYDNEY
it is cheaper for malaysia as we are paying in ringgit, not paying in brunei dollar.
hehe, friendster sweat.gif , dont worry; i wont threaten you blush.gif
*
which airline is this? brunei airway? blush.gif

QUOTE(jae @ Feb 21 2008, 09:25 AM)
Wow that's a lot more expensive(about rm500 more) than what I paid in December for my MAS return. But you as a returning student, should know better that it's always good to get your tickets as early as possible.

For now, I think your best bet would be Jetstar again for one way, it may not be cheap now, but anyhow it's should still be cheaper than most of the full fare airlines given the short period of time you have right now. Or you can try asking the prices for Thai Airways, AFAIK they seem to have the cheapest air fares for KUL-SYD route among the full fares airlines, but you will need to take the KUL-BKK-SYD route, which would definitely take a lot longer.
*
aiks..whats bkk..is it the same as what kvreninem said?

Just asking about the accommodation, since most of you have stayed in Aus longer than me.Heck,im only there for 2 days.

I found a place in Kingsford(those in sydney should know),on a street call Middle Street. It's less than 5 minutes walk to the uni and there are shops near by.The rent is $180 per week. There is a Chinese family with 2 sons that have migrated from China staying there. There will be charges on electricity and internet but she say the total rent wont exceed $200 per week.

The deal is good, close to uni, decent rent, shops near by but there is something holding me back:Are these people trustable?Im kinda afraid that they will con or steal my stuff.Been hearing a lot of these people going to Aus to con people.Shall i take that place or continue looking for other place?

Added on February 22, 2008, 5:50 pm

I bought like 2 big bottles of shampoo to Aus.They didnt check too, even my laptop.

They are more concern of their environment than some prawn.
*
$200 sounds really expensive for Kingsford..is the house furnished? Have you checked where is ur faculty situated? is it near the upper or lower campus? if you stay in Kingsford, have you thought of travelling a bit further to coles/woolies? to me, you can get a place at randwick with $200. security in kingsford is not that good too, compared to randwick..
