calling direct from a payphone is gonna cost you an arm and a leg.........
buy a call card, lots of them from news vendors.......but not the fine prints.......since you will be calling from public payphones, get those with free call access numbers so you don't need to pay at the payphone, but there may be an access charge, or the call rates may be higher.........

The only thing about student accounts is you don't have to pay the monthly fee and most transaction fees. Besides, what sort of bank denies students a interest account?! I can't believe I'm typing this.

What you mean is accounts like the NetBank saver? Full liquidity for students, no minimum, and a 6.25% p.a from Commbank. Edit: Now it's 6.75%. http://www.commbank.com.au/faststart/This post has been edited by Sesshoumaru: Feb 16 2008, 09:42 PM

I hope i don't regret opening an account with Bank of South Australia(a division of St George Banks) under the Student account. Basically my account have no interest but all free transaction using their services (ATM,BPay and etc). But the lady told me i can 'park' my cash in another account that pays 6.75% p.a. and the interest will be there regardless how many withdrawals i made from it, i'm a bit gray when it comes to banking but probably i will study this matter more into details. Anyway online banking is the norm here it seems, here you can do all your banking at their office or branch using their computer and phone for free, which is good. Here in Adelaide there is a lot of Banks, almost all the major banks are covered here and within walking distance from King William Street and esp. Rundle Mall, so withdrawal via ATM is no problem.
Those who wants to buy fresh food i recommend going to Central Market since it's BIG, a lot of foods, fruits on offer and it's just near by Chinatown, just take the 99C Loop bus(its free) in North Terrace, make sure you wait at the right bus stop, the bus driver WILL NOT stop if you raise your hand at the WRONG BUS STOP.
Anyway have a great weekend guys. I'm off to Rundle Mall!

some 'transaction' accounts do not give interests.......but may come with unlimited free electronic and counter transactions.........
some will give interests, but will either come with a monthly 'maintainance' charge, or limited free transactions(excess transactions will be charged), or both........
but they all will have associated or 'sub' accounts, which are ONLY electronically accessible, and comes with high interests.........so most people will keep a minimal amount in the main account, and the bulk of funds in the subaccount, but when you need money, you will need to electronically transfer the money from the sub account to the main account so you can withdraw at the atm........the good news is, most branches will have internet terminals for you to do that...........
in practice, there is really NO need to go to the bank at all.........everything can be done electronically, either internet from home, or at any atm, or direct debit/eftpos/debit visa/master payment, or cash out at eftpos.......
