well,

1. rosin using now is pirastro oliv RM 40.
an all in one rosin for violin viola and cello? interesting, i always thought cello use sticker rosins and violin generally harder ones? correct me if i am wrong. doesn't this make this jade rosin a compromised rosin?

2. infeld red not sure, never paid particular attention to it

dominant would be about the same price locally as what u listed but the difference is u have a set with a different E which not all shops sell like this.

3. bridge is a little bit tricky, it has to match your violin, in other words its not "plug and play" - even thou you chose a gleasel which is supposed to be universal bridge, but that is only as far as the feet are concerned. u would still likely need to sand down and reshape it to match your fingerboard and tailpiece. it difficult to compare to local prices in this case coz most shops would include the installation fees in it. americans buy adjustable bridge coz labour is steep there so they wana DIY, labour is cheaper in malaysia so better to get it done in a shop.

very advanced books you chose huh. seeing that you had to stop your lessons midway even in a short one year period, do you think it be too rushed to buy these? and there is no need to compare prices la, these books are hard to source for here in malaysia anyway, if you are fixed on buying then go ahead la, it is most definitely cheaper on amazon

i've been rather frustrated with the G on my violin. (see earlier post somewhere in this thread).
i was doing a real load of research on buying string then i came accross a site to help u identify your strings (if u forgot them...)

then i realised that i was using the D as my G?!!! shocking.gif no wonder the tension was horrible n i thought i couldnt play G!!
well, i havent touch the D pack, so it must have been packed wrongly?! shakehead.gif

after changing to correct n i changed all the other strings to the dominant set, even with my skills (which is not much...) i can feel the difference

the point of this post is to share this helpful site:
identify your string

my favourite place to order strings online.

http://concordmusic.com/

some are priced cheaper than malaysia, some not. but they don't charge insane shipping price, and you can buy some strings that're not available in malaysia.

Hello people.

May I ask if playing a violin and cello are different? Besides the position and stuff of course, are everything else the same?

And may I ask what's a good electric violin for a beginner?

Thanks in advance. happy.gif

wah.... they might look similar but basically everything is different right

the bow hand is different (you need to fight more gravity in the cello).

price is different (if you think violin strings are expensive then wait till u see cello's)

Demand different. too many violist too few cellists.

================================

well, electric violin ah, i kinda fancy the NS design electric violin if you ask me. keke....

why so fast wana venture into electric violin ah?

@Karenalvin: I see, so that's the difference huh? I wonder is it easier to do vibrato on violin or cello?

And nah, I'm just thinkin' of an electric violin to get in hopes that the sound produced can be plugged in a computer, so that I don't disturb people if I play it or something.

So got any good and cheap electric violins to introduce?

vibrato on cello is easier. but there're so many violinists with beautiful vibrato. wink.gif

i saw the hofner electric violin selling at chamber music, and my friend bought it, the same that's pictured below:
http://en.woodbrass.com/electric+violin+ho...160ev+as+160e+v

it's decent sounding and certainly quality isn't much difference than yamaha silent violin (i actually prefer hofner to yamaha in tone character) that's selling for RM4000+ versus the hofner selling for RM1200+- even at chamber music.

not sure whether they still bring in that model, give them a call first.

seems like you plan to use it for practice hun, then i suggest you save the money la.

As far as I know, they are like different animals (electric and acoustic violins i mean) altogether. better to learn on your current violin. RM 1200 is like 4 times your violin price.

I duno man, if i were you i will invest in a good bow with the money instead.

Little Ice:

I know bows are personal stuff la, but i still gonna ask. Have u tried the Codabows before? Think its value for money?

nope, but i wasn't into coda bows right from the start so i never try them. lot of people love them, but you can't judge opinions from the public because you'll never know in what way they appreciate the bow. their newer Joule model is interesting, that's designed to drive the C string on 5 string violin.

CF bow usually has superior response, power and being able to draw very clean tone with very little noise, but they always have a colder sound compared to wooden bow. if you don't mind the sound, in the price range of RM2000 and below, it's hard to beat CF bow especially in playability. if you want my opinion what to get as advancing bow, i'd recommend to go the wooden bow route, but that's just me.

if you insist on buying CF bows, be careful that CF bows can vary in quality more than you'd imagine, try before buy if you can.

PS: i once owned an Arcus Cadenza Gold. very nice bow, love it until i bought an old wooden bow for under RM3k (i was being lucky actually) that beat the hell out of that Arcus bow that cost 4 times more. sold it, and never look back since then. never trust anyone who claim CF bow is superior to even the best wooden bow.
