well... different brands lo, branded kun, less branded fom. fundamentally no difference. but for the price of a kun u can get two different types of fom. or some really high-end looking carved wood fom which i tink is value for money over the kun la.

but at the end of the day, if you tink a 1.8l beemer is better than a 3.0 honda, i say go for it.

but little ice, dun you think a comfortable shoulder rest reduce the potential for you to stress yourself? i agree the prob is posture, but i tink a shoulder rest can aid in correcting it.

yes, comfortable shoulder rest is essential, but you can't be sure if certain shoulder rest is suitable for which individual. without seeing the problem in person, it's hard to tell.

wish to know kun shoulder rest selling at such high price with not much different with fom shoulder rest , correct me if i am wrong. Is it worth to get it?

i never use a KUN before, but as far as i can see, KUN has better quality material. FOM is obviously an imitation, and it's like 1/4 of the price of KUN. but what i don't like FOM is that the platic flex a little so sometimes the shoulder rest is easy to come off, even no pressure between shoulder/chin.

i definitely recommend FOM simply because it's dirt cheap and i had one that lasted me 5 years, still can use but the foam and rubber need to change cause they're worn smooth and no grip already. it's so cheap to replace it anyway...

one thing about FOM is that they blady imitate everyone. haha... they have the one like KUN, another one after the WOLF and one more like the Mach One i pasted earlier. basically the different brand design rolled into one. haha

On the same note I would like to ask about tightening and loosening the bow hair as well.

Do you loosen the bow hair after playing?

How tight should the bow hair be? How do we know if it is tight enough? We're not supposed to touch our oily fingers on the hair right? My teacher taught me to put a pen in between the hair and bow and tighten it till the pen drop.

yes, loosen after playing or risk damaging your bow.

as to how tight is based on estimation and preference lo, some prefer tighter some less so. jz make sure its not too tight or loose now, after all, different bow different stiffness also.

all this talk about tightness and stiffness. hmmm

when you feel the bow is floating on the string and you need to dig into the string to make good sound, then you need to rosin your bow.

if you see rosin dusts collecting on the violin surface under the strings, or fingerboard, it's a little too much but still ok. but if you bow and you see "smokes" coming out from the bow hair, it's way too much...

PS: to answer your PM, sorry i really don't know when i'm ok. sweat.gif

usually, the distance between bowhair/stick at the middle is about the same width of the bow stick.

i the bow bounce too much on normal bowing, tighten it more. as a general rule of thumb, never tighten to the extent that the bow stick looks straight, it should leave at least some inward curve on it.

i have a doubt about the metronomoe that comes with the tuner. Why is it the first beat (red light) shows by the metronome slightly longer than the following 3 beats? is metrnome showing 4 beats equally?

go online google metronome and time from there lo. but i highly doubt it will be out la, its electronic after all, unless the chip is screwed up or something la. maybe its due to the different sound "ding, tok, tok, tok" that gives the idea lo.

wat brand anyway?

I've asked my teacher the question before and her answer was:

1) Always loosen the bow hair after playing, keeping in tight will stretch the hair and over time, you will need to constantly tighten it further and further.

2) The tightness as many suggested, depends on you. But as a simple rule of thumb, your pinky finger should fit into the gap between the bow and the string. Obviously if you have fat fingers ... laugh.gif

i think there is no definite answer to this. As long as ur tight won't spoil your bow.

Can anyone direct me to a good place that offers violin lessons possibly in klang? I'm from Banting, a small town but since there are no violin teachers in my area i guess i'll have to take a bus to the city every week or so. If possible please include directions from bus terminal to the suggested spot. Thanks.

wat i meant is you should have some specific areas that is more convenient for u right. no point i recommend u ampang or pj or shah alam blah blah if its a hassle to get there. so i guess its better if u have a target area that is easier for u to get to before asking

Well, i think it will be either Klang Sentral or the Bukit Jalil terminal.
