yamaha recently raised their fees, beginner was RM120, and increased about 10%. that applies for retail branches, franchises can follow or set their own fees (due to better renovation, rental due to location etc etc).

for RM150...wangsa walk? hmm.gif

Well... how long is a lesson? if half hour then might be a little high, but depends on the teacher. could be cheaper.

400 for yamaha violin? never seen a yamaha violin, but for brand name it seems a quite cheap....

Maggie,
Based on your comments, I don't know if you are taking the beginners course inclusive of music theory. If yes, then I can say that the fee is reasonable with at least 30 mins for pratical and 30 mins for theory. Otherwise, that amount you are paying is almost for Grade 4.

Regards
*
is for begginer course that include music theory. total 45 minutes

reasonable.

RM133 of beginner violin lesson in retail yamaha branch (not franchise) is only 30mins per lesson and no theory.

i bought mine from the house of violins at penang. it cost around RM 890. My violin was selected by the teacher himself, Mr. Woon (Hehas been conducting violin lessons for 40 years now). For beginners, i would advice yourself to talk to the professional maestro/experienced teacher before investing yourself in an expensive instrument.

no la, that wun happen (unless ofcoz u are so so so unlucky) coz the strings are winded in layers, so even if the core breaks the outer part will not allow it to fly. jz like if u twist a hard wire and break the wire inside but the outer insulator will hold it.

atleast to winded strings la, solid strings i can say for sure. but then again, i am four eyed. haha

Haha, I thought the exact same thing. I also opened my case to find the E string snapped. It is kinda scary to put it so close to the face while playing wondering whether it will snap and hit the face or even cut a finger. Although I can't imagine the G string snapping and even if it does it probably wouldn't do much damage. hmm.gif The little one is the scariest.

talking about string breaking, my case has a strap to hold the violin to its place but i never use it because i dont like pulling the strap and made 'contact' with the string everytime i wan to take out the violin. doesnt matter right? so far so good

LOL. For those of you talking about strings snapping and hitting your face. You sure do have a wild sense of imagination. Anyway, my D-string (not the underwear thingy) snapped once when my teacher was tuning my violin. It just broke but did nothing like springing out and hitting her face. She replaced the string and gave me the bill for it.

need help from sifu, usually after practicing my violin for half an hour then started to feel pain on my shoulder, is it normal, i am currently using fom shoulder rest, but it does not set me in a very confortable feel, after i have been adjusting it with varying position and height, i have a longer neck, and it does not seem to be enuf in fitting the space "between shoulder and neck" of mine. is there any other type of shoulder rest, that comes with better flexibility and more comforable?

I believe the problem is you lifting your shoulders to clamp the violin instead of dropping your neck. as u said, u have a long neck (thou i duno how long is long to cause the problem so i gonna assume its pretty long)

u just have to learn to relax your shoulders, u may even change the position of your chin rest to find a sweet spot, no one said they have to be at THAT fixed position. or try to vary the lengths of the shoulder rest legs to find a good compromise.

as for shoulder rest:

http://petermach.com/

this looks pretty nice. saw a similar design by FOM selling in shops. 50 bucks i think, cant remember.

this is very comfortable if you managed to find one that fits the curve of your shoulders.

disclaimer: no expert on the violin but did study about the human body a little.

put it this way - teacher doesn't want to take any responsbility, then the teacher let the student tune, but the student dunno how to tune, and broke 4 or 5 strings before the student get the job done.

breaking the string can be caused by different reasons - bad maintenance for the string grooves on bridge/nut, bad nut shaping, strings jamming at the pegbox wall etc. it's difficult to break a string if one is careful and tune the string slowly.

it's hard to solve your problem without looking at how you hold the violin. usually, it's the posture that's causing the problem, rather than shoulder rest.

but little ice, dun you think a comfortable shoulder rest reduce the potential for you to stress yourself? i agree the prob is posture, but i tink a shoulder rest can aid in correcting it.
