Good day!

Well, I'm a person that knows nuts about violins, but I want to learn how to play it. It's a cool instrument in my perspective. My preference had a tug-o-war between each other whether to choose the violin or guitar. I've decided to choose the violin after a lot of decision making.

So I live somewhere in KL and I would like to know any good violin shops around it. My budget is about RM500. If anyone could provide information, thanks! happy.gif

And on the behalf of somebody, where can I find a Yamaha SV-200/ SV-150 in KL? Thanks again!

Just got my violin today! Feeling quite happy about it! Now all I need to do is wait for the end of the year when I have the free time to go to a teacher...

Meanwhile, are there any videos on the Internet that can help me occupied (and contain my anxiety) while waiting for the end of the year?

Woah, how much did it cost you? Does it sound good? Sorry, can't answer your question, I'm just an interested violin learner.

Well it costed RM240 and I got it from a shop called Wagner Piano at Jalan Imbi. It was cheaper than Euromusic's cheapest product by like, RM80 I think.

The sound? Haha, sorry but I'm pretty tone-deaf when it comes to violin sounds, whether it sounds good or bad. I can't really judge since I'm a sucky player but all I can tell is that it's pretty loud and vibrant. There's still one more of this type of violin at Wagner Piano, the violin is made by some guy named J.S. Basch IIRC. biggrin.gif

Hmmm, is there anything I could use to dampen the sound of a violin? I've got some pissy neighbours, and even with my guitar, they get pretty annoyed, so I can't imagine if it's a violin cos the last time my friend played her violin, it was pretty darn loud and as far as I remember, when you first start playing it'll sound like a dying cat.

well... mute goes anything from a few ringgit to rm 20 or 30. got mine free from the owner when i got mine. there are 2 mine kinds, orchestra and practice mute. get the practice one.

btw, will stuffing sponge into the f holes work to dampen the sound?

I asked a shop once about mutes. Rubber or metal. Since I'm just a beginner he suggested to just use a clothing peg to press the strings near the bridge to dampen the sound. But I just usually practice before 10 pm so far nobody complained.

Hi. I'm very interested in learning the violin.
Anybody got suggestions on which brand of violin and where to buy? Anybody heard of Helicon?
Preferably around Subang Jaya.

you mentioned Helicon right. not too sure about that, but it sounds like Euphony's house brand, i know they sell piano of the same brand.

anyway, the brand is secondary in your case, choose on a individual violin basis rather than brand name. subang i only know of Vibrante Music in usj 19. if you do drop by pj then i can point u elsewhere....

Well... how long is a lesson? if half hour then might be a little high, but depends on the teacher. could be cheaper.

400 for yamaha violin? never seen a yamaha violin, but for brand name it seems a quite cheap....

Maggie,
Based on your comments, I don't know if you are taking the beginners course inclusive of music theory. If yes, then I can say that the fee is reasonable with at least 30 mins for pratical and 30 mins for theory. Otherwise, that amount you are paying is almost for Grade 4.

Regards
