Just got my Alligator Snapping Turtle today! It was a hard decision actually cuz the smaller one was much more interesting but with a broken tail. I made sure the big one was eating and healthy before i finally chose it.

It has moved into its tank and has already started eating (although it doesn't seem too bright. It's frequently trying to lure fishes at the wrong side. like fishes on right side it open mouth lure on left side).

Also has a peculiar habit. The small one, when you touch its head it will open its mouth in defense. The big one that I bought, when you touch its head it will make its butt stand higher than its head (like made its legs straight up). An odd lil snapper. But very cute. Hehe...

Yeah, they have different personalities and they make great pets for me. Just remember not to poke inside their mouth. LOL

Both mouth wide open and butts-up are normal defense mechanism in alligator snappers.

Be careful when the snapper do the 'butts-up', because it can jump, turn and snap quite fast from that pose.

Wah. I didn't know butt up means that. It didn't even open its mouth, so I thought its "opening" the wrong end.

I put it in a large glass tank. It has lots of space to swim unlike the little plastic tank I saw them in when I bought. Its more interested in hiding under the driftwood though.

The tank is put outside, currently it's bare bottomed with only 1 driftwood and several little fishes. Anything else I need? When it grows up a little more, I'm planning to shift it to a slightly larger tank with filter.

I think the small Alligator Snapping Turtle is still available although the aunty mentioned that someone spoke of his interest to purchase the little fella. No deposit has been placed on the small one yet so it is still available. You can ask for RM 330, I think the aunty will sell lar.

^^" Ic. So you're actually interested or not? She was trying to sell it off. I have to admit it's rare since ally is hard to find and definitely not in that size.

Wow, so you'd better not. I have to say, allies grow quite large. About 26" when full grown. I'm going to have to build a pond just for it when I have my own house. Counting the spaces, just about all the space in the house will get taken by my pets. I was tempted to take the small one too but I can't afford the space it needs when it grows up.

It is kinda pricey but I've been looking for quite some while. They just don't come in that size anymore (My ally is compared to a 50 cents at my picture above) and ally is just plain hard to find. Many people just try to pass off common as ally.

In fact, I went to Creepy Creatures at USJ Summit when I heard they have ally. The fella told me I have to be ready to offer RM 800 at the very least to get an ally! He kept telling me it's impossible to get an ally which is less than 5-6" in size (just the shell). So I was very excited when dzi921 mentioned ally selling, and small ones at that. Compared to the bombastic prices that I keep hearing in my ears (RM380 - RM800) I was thrilled. Plus I've been wanting it for a couple of years.

I think the one in the shop is still for sale. You can get it at RM 330 la. That's the price I got. Its got a very hearty appetite and is a true snapper with a super cool looking pose when it opens its mouth. I personally made sure it ate and was healthy (except the tail).

About the tail, when I first saw it, it looked like 2 white spots on the tail. When I went again on Monday, there's only 1 white spot left but... I really think it's broken. It probably got snapped by my snapper or something. It's oddly crooked and has a funny angle. It doesn't look flexible like the rest of the tail. The part of the tail broken is the bottom quarter (I think).

The tiny plastic tank they're kept in has hardly enough space for it to turn so its tail can't be spread full length. I think it made the condition worse. When it does that, you can see the bottom quarter of the tail bending almost 75 degrees, and I'm not talking about the elegant S shape or C shape that tails get when they're bent. I mean like the hands of a clock at 4 o'clock or similar.

I was really more interested in the small one but the ridges on the big one's shell was better looking and the small one's broken tail really helped me make a decision. If you don't mind the tail, it'll be great.

If you really decided to get it, maybe point out the broken tail and ask for a lower price?

^^ If you've decided to get it anyway, then I hope you're ready for the commitment and that you enjoy having it. I'm glad I bought mine.

@mamba : ^^ Thanks. I did mention that my snapper is odd? It just makes the butt up signal, it's hard to catch him in action out of tank with open mouth. The fella scared i'll eat his tongue or something. If can I'll try to get the shot la.
