Chops like i said before in my article are really barbaric and dirty fighters.

Here's another example...

Smallchop(bottom) vs Bro1(top)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WGVXpuX3uuA

Notice how small chop target the arm...almost severing it.

Aiyah, viper, I put slow motion also you cannot see what happened in JackvsBighead encounter?

When the fight was over, I also thought Bighead won with a bit of scruffle and it was Bighead which was left standing on the stage. I thought nothing much happened. The reason is because it happened at such amazing speed. But NO, it was Jack that was left standing where Bighead stood and facing the direction that Bighead faced! When I saw the spider left on the stage wiping its fangs on the floor of the stage(white flat cardboard) and the blood stains it left behind, I GASPED! I looked closely and immediately knew Bighead is on the floor while Jack is left blowing the smoke from his gun.

Here i show frame by frame. I marked in the pictures reddot as Jack and yellow dot as Bighead.
(If you right click and click [save target as] for all this pics and save in one folder, then click View>Filmstrip you can clearly see what happened by typing arrow right)

Attached Image
Frame1: Bighead left, Jack right
Attached Image
Frame2: Jack jumped over Bighead to attack its abdomen tip. It happened so fast that my camera cannot capture the time it spend in the air although my camcord frame rate is 24 frames per second!
Attached Image
Attached Image
Frame3 and 4: With Jack riding on Bighead and biting its abdomen tip, Bighead tries to arch its back to bite Jack.
Attached Image
Frame5: This is the pivotal moment where jack was swung round(see arrow) ...
Attached Image
Frame6: ...and landed on its back in this frame. From here to frame 14, Jack can be seen on his back with Bighead
desperately trying to twist his way out.

Frame15: Frame14 and 15 shows Bighead flipping forward towards the edge of the stage. While in this frame (15 ) and the next you can see Jack also pushing himself back upright.

Attached Image
Frame17: However here you can see that because Jack fangs is still hooked to Bighead and Bighead is actually in its way should he comes upright, it loses balance and swings towards the left still being upside down.

Frame19: Bighead desperately trying to escape Jack's deadly grip.

Frame20: As Bighead drops, Jack amazingly let go to climb back onto the stage surface.

All in all 24 frames... meaning ONE second!

Btw chop fighting spiders are not the only spiders that fight like that.  Check this out (thanks, mindstorm).

External link: Big spider star female fight (Sorry I couldn't get the embed feature to work)
Jumping at the opponent is actually quite common among other jumping spiders that are not T. bhamoensis.  They are not widely publicized because they are not as common/easily acquired as fighting spiders nor are they easily controllable by hand.  They do not dance around like normal fighting spiders, so that may also contribute to the disinterest among spider enthusiasts.  But they do exactly what chops do.
nice one, Dan!
Still remember this clip man...blazing fast.
Did you see the pic viper post as "spider besi" in page 11, post# 216? Do you think that is "big spider star" which we call it? Looks like it...

Heh... my sis don't like my demon butt biting spider very much either. She ask me wheather she can swat it. doh.gif

To me, chops are just using another way of fighting instead of going head-on with pushing. Basically in head-on fights usually the spider with more strength and endurance will win. Manoveuring techniques(Spartan is a perfect example) is also important but when the arms are lock, it's to a large degree strength vs strength. If a small guy would to fight a big guy, going head-on would be the most stupid thing to do. It's like in Dota, if you use a intelligent/melee hero, you're not going to fight face-to-face with a strength hero. Sure mati.

Another thing we can see is that the danger of a chop spider is not just in its attacking but also in the very start of its encounter with the opponent. Very often, the chop either show little display or just widen or lift its forelegs/arms. If you see a kecut spider, it also lift its arms when it sees another spider, and then it runs. Chops seems to imitate that but instead of running it walks SLOWLY forward. This ability to trick its opponent by holding an unassuming position just before striking with lighting speed is also a key to their successful style.

Wa.. i didnt expect BigHead will lose. I thought the fight end up like Bigleave.  Bigleave ran away also?

The leaf u put in Jack case, is it dried leaf?
Wat i know, if put dry leaf for the spider, kept alwys in dark place and with little water or food, there are chances the FS become more aggressive/chop.

Yes, Bigleaf also ran away. The one left standing there is also Jack..again taking the same position of its opponent!
If you interested, the frames to that fight is in this zip file... 25 frames...also about 1 second. Jack is right and Bigleaf is left.

No, i no longer keep my spiders with leaves... laugh.gif

I was like "Wat?! Wat happened??" when viper msg me telling me Spartan died. What a tragic! And a mystery too... dying suddenly like that when all seem well is really strange. I wish i am there to investigate..but i think by now u should bury him....

Did you feed Spartan with housefly recently?

As a tribute to ur two great spiders which i myself wished i own them.
I uploaded Archilles vs Spartan on youtube. I must say, this is the most awesome fight i have seen.

Added on March 2, 2008, 3:37 amI was chatting with Mangrovejumper on icq and was wondering wheather could be fungus, parasites(internal or external, virus or bacteria). Really strange. How i wished i have a microscope there to investigate. To see what is the white thingy and also to disect his bloated abdomen.

Met viper today and saw Spartan.. he is dried up and stuck to the casing. Very puzzling. The white stuff surrounding the abdomen..couldnt make out what it is. I don't think it is web, because they seem to growth outwards...more like fungus. The abdomen may "look" bloated because of this white thingy. When i saw it the abdomen of cuz already dry up and looks thin. Very very strange.

CHOPS LOSES!!

Here's today's fights in chronological order. UNFORTUNATELY i did not charge my batteries for my camcord, so i used my camera, so the clips BLUR but still can see the action.

1)X2 vs small chop
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7txP3qFtwLA
2)X3 vs small chop - round 2
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xbbgpkRLMSk
3)Hope vs Bro1 - short fight, Bro1 scrambled
4)Hope vs Bigleaf
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ww7ImudNwxU
5)Lily vs Bro1 - short fight, Bro1 scrambled
6)Bighead vs Hope
7)Bighead vs Hope- round2
8)Bighead vs X
9)Lily2 vs Jack - FIGHT OF THE DAY - 25 seconds
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=br5xrd2uyX0
Lily2 was amazing in this fight, kena lift and turned upside down also kept fighting to win!!! shit!
Jack got his side legs injured... lifted up. I think his legs got bitten while Lily2 was upside down! Salute to Lily2.
10)Bighead vs Lily2

I have grouped fights 6,7,8 and 10, all of Bighead fights in this clip
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g6tidbFYOII

Chops fights are the best to watch. But in frontal face-to-face combat against a same size healthy normal FS, even at times chops can lose.

3. Jack vs X
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MT2S-M6JLZ0
4 Hope vs Jack(2 matches in 1 clip)
In the second 15s match, Jack again manages to flip its opponent, Hope.
Attached Image
But Hope was undeterred and got back in position to continue fighting(can see Hope is slightly bigger)
Attached Image
In the end, Jack was topsy turvy trying to escape from Hope's strong relentless attack.
Attached Image
see video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3WOVd9pdrDI

Hope win Jack, Jack win Bighead, Bighead win Hope... triangle ranking.

Here is a interesting video i took. I just switched off the bright lights at around 10:15pm but left a dimmer light on...
all of a sudden i noticed my female spiders starting moving.... what are they doing??
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kxh1c3M6SVk

I am keeping about 20 spiders now, males and females. Some people must be wondering how i get 20 small insects everyday to feed them. Well, just rear them loh...
Look at my staple feed for my spiders.

Yeah, but i think better not start naming them lily1, lily2, lily3... getting confusing. Not much different from naming them codes, G4, G6, Z9....
A unique name like Archilles, Spartan, Quietman, Scareycat or Kelapasawit...straight away we can remember their fights and glory...

You're right, I think the fuzz looks like fungus.  I wonder if it has to with too much moisture or darkness?  It reminds me of the stuff that grows on the skin of fruits that you keep for too long.  My other thought is the fungus grew from the inside...especially the fact that it attacked the abdomen only, very puzzling indeed.

Viper: What is the ranking for your spiders?  Hope, Lily2 and X all look about the same size.

Mindstorm:  Did Jack try to attack the stomach and fail?  It's also brighter...so it may help the normal spiders see and defend themselves better.  As mentioned earlier, I think if the normal FS can withstand the initial attack, they have a chance.
Bighead didn't even break a sweat, looked selamba only after winning.  I'm glad to see that Bighead and Bigleave have recovered.
*
Nope, Jack did not try to jump over. Maybe i feed it too much cuz its stomach full. I had one clip where Jack fight with Bro1 when Jack was fat, also did not jump over. Then again this skill is not easy to execute and i doubt a spider can use it all the time consistently. So partly luck also like you said.

Fuiyo... when i looked closer at the second match between Hope and Jack, I realize Jack again tried to jump over(check out the 3rd frame) Hope to attack abdomen but Hope was fast enough to lift arm to block the attack and catapulted Jack back onto even ground . Geng man. Like viper said, Bighead and Bigleaf wasn't fast enough to do that.

I never see any white colour fungus bfr.... most fungus i saw the colour like light green, brown or black colour 1.
The white colour stuff looks abit the web/nest for FS egg... i oso not really sure but looks like thick concerntrated web to me.
The white stuff is inside the abdomen, can see from the bottom its abdomen all turn white, from top the white stuff covers it from outer part of its abdomen.

Certainly it is not web la. If you look closely it is is like small spikes jutting out, how can be web leh? Web is wrapped round. There is white fungus but i was thinking.. i sort of remember the white stuff was pretty hard too so it cant be fungus cuz fungus is soft esp outgrowing ones. What is hard and white?... sugar? Also what goes round the abdomen of a spider? Breathing vents? Could somehow all these be linked? Since you let your spider drink so much fruit juice...

Are you still keeping Spartan? If so, try dipping it in water and see wheather the white stuff "melt" away...

Sugar is sticky, and can certainly cuz ur spider to stick to the surface as it dries out...

There is one way to find out...do a control test. Have to sacrifice one spider then...

It's just a guess so it may not be true, but I don't think spiders have the enzymes to digest sugar.  Who knows what happens to the fructose molecules floating around in the spider's blood.  I know they don't get to drink sweet stuff in the wild.

I theorise the chances of a chop winning a fight dramatically increases in a darker environment, because the opponent cannot see the initial attack coming and doesn't have enough time to react to it.

Hmm...ok...should i try Bighead vs Jack round 2 under bright outdoor lights?

I notice an interesting thing. Bighead was getting sluggish and wasnt interested in jumping last 2 days. Viper also saw it...it just try to crawl from one perch to the next. When i took home and played with it, it didnt want to jump at all... it just walk around on my finger and if i put another finger near it spin a web a crawl on the web to go to my other finger which is so near!

But i persisted in trying to make it jump. Then after much trying, it gave a short jump... then after that it then jump more and further and once or twice it jumped quite far. As if suddenly it remembered how to jump. Maybe spiders too need constant exercise. However it doesnt crouch before jumping like a normal healthy spider usually do. Somehow from a normal standing position, it just can jump...like Jack when it tries to attack. Weird.

Also Bighead is not gripping well onto vertical plastic surface not like the other spiders.

Seems like age is catching up on him. Maybe having arthritis. And losing sticky soles.

Today not working, morning went to KL Tower Forest till afternoon and later went to Tasik Titiwangsa to look for FS.  laugh.gif
After brave through the forest alone and walk around Tasik Titiwangsa till 2.30pm... only get some small FS.. haiz... Not able to find any large male FS at all.. only
2 small males and 9 females..i think maybe some are male but havent chg skin yet. Released all the small FS into my house front small garden.

The Spider Bandar is very big.. found 2 big ones. 1 about 20 cent coin size and the other one.. is very BIG.. almost like 50 cent coin size.
I open the leaf and was almost shock to see a big Spider Bandar inside..too bad its not the FS tat i'm looking for. sweat.gif

Maybe next time when i'm off weekend,  i'll follow my neighbour go back his hometown to look for FS at kelapa sawit plantation there.

Wah, looks like you're enriching the gene pool of FS in your garden.

Nice pictures you have there... looks like a big monitor lizard. Yeah, sometimes you think that area have lots of spiders may turn out to be quite dissapointing. And further more if the area is vast, take long time to find the hot spots.

Great, will look forward to your kelapasawit spiders, man.

Slow motion for the long fights? Wah... the file sure very big. The slow motions i did is for about 1 second... about 20% slower. So for a 15 second fight, the total slow-mo fight time will be 75 second. Maybe the file will become 20-30mb. Well i try and see when i free within the next few days.

I open the container a bit and try to scoop them with the casing my spider is in, sometimes some fly out...but because the flies have no where to go, usually they fly back onto the container top, there i can scoop it too. With ready food supply, i can feed my 20 spiders in less than 15min. Giving water takes 3 seconds. I just spray them.

Ivan from singapore wants to comeup to KL next week friday, are you free that day? Maybe 3 of us can go some new place.... icon_idea.gif

Very interesting articles you found. Didnt know got gliding jumpers. I also wonder wat Evarcha culicivora looks like...dracula spider.

FUIYO, another unique fight by your spiders!! Fighting in the air! They were fighting very fast, cannot capture their minute movements. First time i see FS fight on a web for so long! Got see before but not so long. Last part there i see like X2 cut off the web of X to make him fall? Hard to say if X2 have advantage or disadvantage position...afterall hanging on a web gives the spider not much support...
But really exciting match.

X2 is smaller than X yet now become 2nd king. X2 looks like a dark horse.

Here are the fights I have today. Not as exciting as vipers. But i think Redleaf is becoming chop.

Wah, i like the blue Thiania, Thiania demissa, its abdomen stripes is straight across rather than slanting. Must go Tioman and catch! Ok, my next holiday with my wife i must plan Tioman..hehe.
This makes me think...wat about Langkawi, Pulau Perhentian etc... all those islands. All the spiders there are isolated from the mainland, so their gene lines will develop independently from our normal FS, hence their different strip patterns. Ok, whereever i go, i will look for FS! Maybe can get a super big or fierce type!

The female Thiania from India also looks different. I have come across this page before last year but i didnt see the the page where the blue male from Tioman is. Thanks viper, looks like you have been googling around for Thiania Bhamoensis huh? Hehe.. i do that too.

Here's a species from Cameron Highlands, caught by MangroveJumper when he went trekking there with his family.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aVC6jBwC0oI
But this species a bit thin but look garang(fierce).

Here's the Black Thiania I caught from north of KL. I released all of them already cuz at that time i wasnt rearing my food source so really hard to keep so many spiders. But i'm still keeping one of the other species which photos i posted earlier.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T6GnfGDuvSc

Last but not least, here's a Thiania Species from Taiwan, Thiania subopressa Strand, 1907. Looks like got 2 types. Mangrovejumper and me was looking at this website late last year. Damn cool man. Impressive macro pictures. Too bad I can't read Mandarin otherwise I will try to communicate with the Blueray guy.
Sigma1920: If you're reading this you should check out this website also. It's a huge website(some Nature Society one i think) with plently of incredible macro photos of different spiders and insects. Click the green arrows on the top right of the page to go to other spider/insect related treads.
http://x4.net.vnu.edu.tw/~tbgweb/cgi-bin/t...pic=497&show=25

Here's a red Thiania being eaten by another jumper. Same website. Scroll down.

Some of the documented thiania species but no pictures.

Viper: Thanks for the southindianspiders link.  It will help us identify some common spiders in the future.

Mindstorm:  Still have no success with mating chops?  Haha.  What is the chop female up to nowadays?
*
Yeah still no success. But that's because the female unwilling, from the clip you can see if I can get a willing female, Jack would be able to mate. Must plan a hunting trip soon. I didnt fight females lately. The chop female pretty inactive compared to the other females. Mostly staying under the artificial leaf.
