QUOTE(sangels @ Mar 19 2008, 11:15 PM) Climbed up the water bottle. I use storage box to keep my hamsters, this box I use the unused mesh ladders from a bird cage to cover. Didn't realize the banded so smart.... use the water bottle as ladder to climb and squeeze through the bars.... sigh.... |

QUOTE(sangels @ Mar 19 2008, 11:30 PM) Hmmm... don't under estimate hamsters, they are very smart. I get to know this from JackJack. Saw the way he climb up to bite my tank lid and the way he escape from the playpen, I know how smart they can be. Yah loh... damn smart. My bottle only the spout is available for it. LOL.... coz I burned a hole, so the body of the bottle is outside.... so this dove banded damn smart.Hope you can find your banded dove back. I like that color very much Now I am left with 1 dove.... I used to have a solid dove short haired, from Reanne.... poor thing died from wet tail.... I was at Pet Safari just now.... the robos there are so freaking tiny. The RC hamsters were ok.... but labeling Black mottled RC hamsters as Panda hamster is so.... wrong man.... WW left a few, no Syrians I think... didn't see any.... But there are treats and hamster food with discount.... didn't buy coz I got plenty at home. |

Wahhh, you guys talk until i blur blur la... dorsal stripe la... white markings laaa... silvered or diluted laaa... hey, this is a very nice colour, but the pic is a bit blur... can try to get a nicer pic and share with us?? would like to see the real colour of this cuttie! Interesting and unique! I still haven't found the missing one yet.... my escaped rat is running around my house, haven't trap it yet LOL. Yesterday my brother caught back my escaped baby leopard gecko. Many of my pets like to escape and play hide and seek with me.... sigh.... Not many people appreciate RC and Syrians.... but nice to see more people into Syrians now. You should go to Singapore, so many nice colours of Syrians there. Sad that I didn't bring any back RC is the only dwarf hamster that comes in a variety of colours.... |

QUOTE(d100200 @ Mar 22 2008, 11:43 PM) Update on my baby hammies. She is doing what nature made her do.... the skinny one is sick.... it may have died so instinct tells her to eat the body so that she gets protein, and also to clean up her living area coz in the wild, hamsters do this to avoid leaving a trail of dead animal smell for scavengers and predators to find.Yesterday I saw the mom carry 3 babies into the sand bathing box and left 2 outside. Just now I checked, only 4 in the sand box. So I wait till she is eating then open the box and check, the skinny little one is gone. I only saw a tittle piece of skin or something left...like black dry skin, can notice some tiny hand. I believe she ate the skinny one and suck him dry..... -Nos- Give you 3 Agouti trade for 1 back, mau? |

If get from petshop, sure need a bit of time and patience to get the hamster tame. Same with any small animal.
For those who wanna breed, please read up on breeding and don't just breed coz you wanna see baby hamsters running around. The WW that has another 8 pups.... you risk your female having a shorten lifespan..... a litter after a litter, it damages the body, aging it faster than normal. Don't fall into the trap where your emotions tell you "Oh, my hamster needs sex" or "I wanna see a family of hamsters grow".... this isn't the right way. Those green round pellets.... they aren't good.... basically all wheat. Do not just stick to these kinda foods. Change. Don't think wanna save money and all. Hamsters are cheap but then you need to provide good housing and food, so those of course cost more than a hamster. Provide with good food. Even the minimum quality brand I would suggest is Habitrail Staple food. The best is Prestige. Next is Harry Hamster and Habitrail Classic. LM Farms hamster diet is the same quality as Habitrail Staple and more expensive too. |

Sunflower seeds are bad. A few sunflower seeds are ok.... but if you feed them as a staple everyday, is very bad. High in fat, it is like a human eating french fries everyday. Is french fries good for us if we eat everyday?
So go and purchase a pack of Habitrail. Is not that expensive. 1.2kg is already like RM7.90.... some places cheaper too. 2.2kg is around RM12 to Rm13.... it has sunflower seeds but also corn, wheat grains and alfalfa pellets. You may think they do not eat these but they will nibble. At least nibbling these grains and pellets also give them nutrition. |

11 pups to 1 hamster? That is like.... nursing overtime. The hamster may be a good mom but it really takes a toll on the body.
Nos, some hamsters have strong mothering instinct, so they do not mind other hamster's pups. But this is risky coz this is not what a normal hamster would do. In most cases, the mother hamster would ignore or injure the new pups, and once those new pups die, she will cannibalize. In some, the mother hamster would cannibalize immediately. |

QUOTE(bidangayah @ Mar 25 2008, 11:09 AM) just join the hammy club... The bowl that you should be using is a heavy ceramic bowl. It is heavy so it won't overturn.Anyway.... both pearls? Do separate them. Breeding pearls with pearls can breed out sterile hamsters. Anyway, is not good to just breed without knowing the age and also how good is their health. Practice responsible ownership. QUOTE(lil`pumpkinz @ Mar 25 2008, 01:38 PM) Yes, it will if you do not separate them when the babies are 5 weeks old. Animals got no sense as who is mama, who is papa. As long male and female, sure breed. |

QUOTE(jayniel @ Mar 25 2008, 02:49 PM) wanna ask some RC pros here.. i bought a RC from a forumer not loo long ago, but recently she has shown signs of flipping iover.. sometimes she even do somersaults backwards too.. Did your hamster fall recently? Coz a blow on the head could lead a hamster to flip and circle a bit but it would go away once the hamster is steady. If it goes on, then it is a genetic disorder.the forumer told me it's just her playful behaviour.. but i dun think so n i think it's a genetic deformity.. may i noe wat reli is the cause? will it pass down to her future pups? very concerned here, need urgent guidance on this matter.. n how can it be cured? thanks alot, just wanna clarify my doubts ere.. Oh, do not breed this hamster. It is a genetic disorder. Happens commonly in mottled lines. It has to do with the brain. It comes in 3 forms, flipping, pacing and circling. In extreme cases, the hamsters would stop eating and starve. Best advice, do not house it with other RCs and do not breed it. QUOTE(bibi5 @ Mar 25 2008, 03:12 PM) Oh..can't play with hands?? Robos are hard to tame. You have to earn their trust. If you do not make them trust you and get used to your hand, then they will forever be runners and afraid of you.Btw, thanks for ur info, I shall alert when comes to 4th months QUOTE(bibi5 @ Mar 25 2008, 03:54 PM) But I can't mixed them with other dwarfs rite?....Btw, this is my 1st hamsters pet...I chose Robo just cause it looks damn cute..never think it is super runners too..Sigh Shouldn't buy coz cute. You should have thought about it. Syrians, Winter Whites and RCs are great hamsters to play and hold.... not robos. |

QUOTE(HolyCross @ Mar 25 2008, 07:17 PM) yea.... Robos are like that lah... is very hard to gain their trust unless you get from a proper breeder who has already hand-tamed them for you.sometimes even worst..when i carry it for too long...my robo bites QUOTE(anbusan @ Mar 25 2008, 09:09 PM) Hello guys do you know why My hamster has been making the sound like a hiccup? He making the sound normally when he wake up from sleep about 2-3 minute. Hiccups are normal. You need not worry.Another one, making the sound like wind from her mouth and she making this sound when she wake up from sleep. Do you know why? Both of them so aggressive, eats, yawn, stretch body, cleans and runs as usual. QUOTE(jayniel @ Mar 25 2008, 09:35 PM) it could've started happening weeks ago, but i do not notice.. until yesterday nite (i slept late) i notice it flips n somersaults.. it's impossible she bangs her head on anything cos there's nth in my tank except water bottle n plastic food bowl.. btw she's probably around 2 months old now.. it's happening again today n it could be wat u said, a genetic disorder.. but she's not a mottled.. any idea how this came about? inbreeding? parents carrying this disorder? she still carries out normal activiteis but will flip all of a sudden.. Mottled, could be one of the parents is a mottled.... or a banded. But it is more common in mottleds.... meaning, even solid colours also can get this but not so easily. So if yours has it, then it is just one of the solids that gets it. The genetic disorder didn't turn up in the parent but in the new generation. This happens sometimes.hope the forumer wont breed that line again..... If she somersaults, then it is the brain disorder already. She would need to be housed alone so other hamsters do not bully her. |

QUOTE(bidangayah @ Mar 26 2008, 11:15 AM) I won't say much coz Jayniel has already answered very well for you. Breeding won't bring in profit at all.... fun... if the hamster and pups do not die then maybe fun for awhile... but when they multiply then how? Buy more cages? Also your cage there is really really tiny for 2 WW.Your WW are not pearls.... there is one sapphire, the other one in the wheel, can't see clearly.... what made you think they were pearls? You really need to read up and learn about winter whites. You need more knowledge.... and breeding needs to be researched on. QUOTE(sogoatticus @ Mar 26 2008, 12:59 PM) eh can someone help me?my 2 males WW starting to fight this few days..actually only the pearl attacking the agouti..the agouti somtimes bleed a bit..they live together so long and no fight at all untill now..any mistakes that i did? You didn't do anything wrong.... is more like they just decided that they need more space now. So the best thing to do is separate them. This is the drawback of WW.... you won't see this happen much in RCs... but it is common for WW coz WW do prefer solitary lives. Even if they get on well when young, once they mature and feel that their space is not enough, they will fight. |

QUOTE(anderyna @ Mar 26 2008, 11:14 PM) Hi, I am a newbie, may I ask Odour... the best beddings would be Breeders Celect and Healthy Pet. Both are made from recycled newspaper but Breeders Celect is for cats.... the price is about Rm16.80 for Healthy Pet (only Pet Lovers Center carry this) and RM22 for Breeder Celect.1.Is there any bedding that can absorb the hamster odour and easy to clean up?? 2.Is a newbie like me suitable to keep Winter White?? 3.I need to prepare how much money for a start, for 1 hamster?? 4.Where can I buy the Habitrail cage?? I think I need to do more research before I really get one. Winter White is ok for newbie but do keep only 1. Do not trouble yourself with a pair.... Money.... you would need RM100 to RM150, depending on what you buy. Avoid buying Habitrail OVO, ventilation is very bad as I have seen what it can do to hamsters during a warm day. Look for other cages. But if you ask me, best is a tank. Easier to maintain, less mess to clean up and you can decorate it yourself. Up to your imagination. Remember to get good quality food. Try not to settle for cheap foods. Go for Prestige. QUOTE(ROTiJOHN @ Mar 26 2008, 11:25 PM) Most animals can suffer or die from eating chocolate.... only rats can tolerate chocolate. No for hamsters and dogs. It's poison. |

Most of the hamsters sold at Pet shops are long haired Syrians lah. They are young, that is why the long hair doesn't show much. But the long hair would depend on what you feed. Say you feed cheap food, keep in dirty cage, sure the fur won't grow nice and long. Mine also long haired.
As for separating cages..... do not use wire mesh you get from DIY shops. Hamsters that chew on that wire will suffer from galvanized metal poisoning. It shortens the hamster's lifespan. Use plastic. You can get fish separators from the aquarium. Just ask them. Choose the one with less holes so that your hamster is less likely to climb. If you 2 ft tank is the glass type for fishes, then it is ok. But say it is those plastic ones, then forget it. Making a separator for such tanks won't last or work coz of their uneven shape like a trapezium. |

Females got long haired. As said before, all petshops do sell. Just that only the males grow longer hair. Females stay fuzzy and fluffy. Males have the longer fur that makes them very furry.
