anybody DIY-ed the separator for tank before? wat do u use n how did u do it? since the tank is trapezium in shape i find it hard to make a nice n proper separator.. anyone has ideas?
*
Cut your own. You can get those plastic boards which some places called cloroplast or impraboard.... well, something like that. You can find at popular bookstores too. Just measure and cut according to the shape of your tank, then later use heavy duty masking tape to tape it up nicely.

If you want a mesh type of separator, then you use the board, cut it into a frame then use masking tape to tape it up. Well.... use your imagination.

wahseh..20% if im going to get a syrian i'll go for female..lol..too big the balls an eye sore  tongue.gif
*
Actually, males Syrians are much better.... that is to me after having about 16 Syrian hamsters now. Males may have big balls but then they have nicer fur. The male syrian has longer and fuzzier fur than females. Female syrians will come on heat every few days, and they will produce this thick liquid on their genital..... if you touch it, it would stink to high heaven! Wash also hard to come off, it will take a few times to wash it off but you will always smell a hint of it after washing lah. Their fur is also not as long. Males can be groomed with a toothbrush. In fact, the brushing improves the male's coat and it can calm the hamster as well.

Get a male, for me, is nicer to have heheheheh.....

Now I'm going along with Syrian fever.... 16 Syrians..... crazy loh..... but I like. Out of 16, only 4 are banded colours. The rest all solid solid. rclxm9.gif Now my aim is to find more solid coloured syrians.

Anyone know where I can get those pellet for bedding?

I cant find it in Pet Safari in Ikano.
*
Pet Shack has. You can go to Sunway Mentari, shop is behind the McD.

Anyway, is not meant for small animals.... mostly for cats. Breeder's Celect. But if you go to Pet Lovers Center at Sunway Pyramid, there is a brand called Back 2 Nature.... same with Breeder's Celect manufacturer, just that the size is different and made for small animals. I think Pet Safari should have, unless sold out.

Pet Safari has Healthy Pet in the small animal section supplies. It works equally as good. Not as heavy too.

2 of my WW start fighting adi... i've separated them... but somehow i want them to be together (coz dun wanna keep all in 1 cage)... can i reintroduce them together??... is it high possibilities that they will fight again??..

for my past experience with syrians, they do fight... i new to WWs... so i not quite sure what to do...  unsure.gif
*
Syrians are different mah...... so you should not compare with Syrians.

WW... they will squabble.... but did you read wikipedia? It did mention WW likes to live alone and do not like company. If you bought from a breeder, 2 are less likely to fight if they are siblings.... but if from a petshop or different petshops, then they will fight.

Do a split cage for them. Also, try and take a drop of perfume and put 1 drop just behind their ears, in between the head. The smell could cover up their own scent and they may not fight. But you gotta be cautious with such introductions lah.

Yah... so when I hold my females, I always make sure I don't let them sit on their butt or let my hand touch their butt.... I will check to see if on heat or not. If on heat, I won't handle them hahaah... WW, RC and Robo got no such heat thing lah.

Goodness... siblings? And you wanna see them mate? Better you separate lah.... is not right.....

QUOTE(CallMeMonkey @ Mar 2 2008, 04:36 PM)
dude, since you said they are siblings, mating them would not be a good idea. they are high percentage that deformed baby will be born. and if it happens... what are you gonna do about it? throw them?

if you love your hamsters, i suggest you seperate them ASAP. and btw, all hamsters live well on their own, having partners to accompany them is not necessary
*
Yups, agree with you. Sigh.... pity that many people wanna breed without reading up on how to breed properly. And yes, most hamsters like to live alone.

QUOTE(sOuLx @ Mar 2 2008, 05:05 PM)
the new syrians at petshack are banded or solid colour?
*
All banded.

Not many places have solids.... even in Petaling Street, most or all are bandeds. Also, it is hard to find Syrians with round round bear bear faces heheheheh.

doh.gif  doh.gif  doh.gif  u think i first day rare hamster meh... separate adi... and i not intentionally want to see animal porn ler... but percentage of having deformed babies are quite low... previously my syrians (i guess were siblings as well) mates... both batch of their pups all grow up healthy....

honestly i felt abit regret buying the male... coz its still not tame and jumps off my hand quite frequently.... it tried to bite my hand a few times already... and it is bullying the female....

so, adoption is up... anyone living in melaka wants a male WW can get from me... confirm healthy, but not vr tame lar....  tongue.gif
*
Well, you said you wanted to see hamster porn.....

Although deformed babies are low, do you think it is right for a brother and sister to breed? No right? This is all ethics lah.... who knows what problems can come up. Especially with dwarf hamsters.....

so any other suggestion for bedding? can we DIY bedding using newspaper? blend it with water and dry it? im not tryin to be kedekut..just asking..hehehe  tongue.gif coz i read there is one type of bedding using recycle newspaper called yesterday news of sumthing..cant remember.

Read the 1st page. Already got state what bedding is good.

Do not use local newspaper.... it can kill a hamster from lead poisoning.... the ones overseas have ink that are vegetable based and are safer, not our local newspaper.

rclxm9.gif  rclxm9.gif  rclxm9.gif I found few solid colored syrians in one of the pet shop in Penang. There have solid cream, solid cinammon, solid white, solid umbros and solid sable. They are all between 4-6 weeks old. wub.gif  wub.gif

Another important thing is: the pet shop care taker is feeding the hamsters with fresh fruits and veges from small.  rclxms.gif  rclxms.gif  rclxms.gif The price also very reasonable.

Other than hamsters, there also have ferret, white hedgehogs, white faced robos, and others animals as well with very reasonable price.  thumbup.gif  Going to add on my memebers in the family  rclxm9.gif

I also don't know what's the breed. My friend forced me to own them. Something like Goldfries's ones - grey color and black eyes.
My previous one was brown color with red eyes. Do you want? I must give them away a.s.a.p. I actually want one, my friend gave me 2. He said it will die very fast due to loneliness of I just have one. Is it true?

Added on March 4, 2008, 9:28 pmHere's my cutie. Btw, can I feed my hamsters with the normal kuaci that I get from the supermarket? I notice they love kuaci so much.

Red eyes is RC hamster, your one in the pic is a WW hamster.... Do not mix them, both different species.

Anyway, hamsters do not die when alone.....

QUOTE(lil`pumpkinz @ Mar 4 2008, 10:19 PM)
I used to keep only one hamster, but they didn't survive for more than 3 mths.
I get my hamster the proper food which contains some kuaci as well, but I notice they only eat the kuaci.
*
Kuaci is actually kinda bad lah.... if you have only been feeding cheap hamster food with no fresh foods available, and if the hamster is young, it can die but not from loneliness, more like from malnutrition.... i keep all my RC and Syrians single, got die from loneliness? No.....

QUOTE(hooverbell @ Mar 5 2008, 12:22 AM)

Kuaci should be fed sparingly, not loads of it. Kuaci can spoil a hamster's health coz it is high in fat with little nutritional properties... is junkfood. Try imagining yourself eating french fries everyday.... it's about the same thing. So if the hamster food already has kuaci, then do not buy and add more.

Pretty Syrians! And my pretty white face robos! Hahahaha.... miss them. I haven't taken any pics of my pets lately, maybe must take soon heheheh.

Syrians are yes, solitary but when they are 6 weeks old, it is still ok for them to be in a small group for a while. The fighting and solitary attitude would start when they are about 4 months old or older. So if travelling or tempory housing, is ok to be house together but not permanently lah.

White face robos, finding them depends on luck. Mostly they are sold with normal robos....

Opal RC, it really depends on luck as well coz with all hamsters, petshops get their stock from mass suppliers, they do not get from proper breeders. Colour is random, normally all normal RC colours coz they simply breed. Suppliers never study colour genetics, they never do proper breedings. Pets Wonderland petshops also sell wrong colours with high prices.... so the best way to find the colour you want, you gotta try your luck and visit every petshop with lotsa RC hamsters to choose.

Yups, what sangels said is true. KL is of course expensive but Malacca, Johor, Penang... all different prices. If you hamster is not small, got no dorsal stripe on the back, then it is a Syrian.... I mean... don't tell me you cannot judge the species yourself? Don't you ever read the 1st page? Got pictures to different species of hamsters.... price is not the answer to telling species lah....

Also, you cannot say menyesal and all. A hamster is a life, not some toy or object.....

Baby hamsters can only be separated 6 weeks after birth.... so do not separate earlier than 4 weeks. 5 weeks still ok but they need to learn some stuff from their mom.

If you do not wanna breed hamsters, then do not put your male and female together.... it will only bring about more trouble and more mouths for you to feed if you are on a tight budget.

Syrians are one of the biggest hamster species kept as pets. Most petshops have very little knowledge and would advice you to get those small cute cute cages or even keep them in a pair.

Please do not fall into this trap. Syrians are totally different. They can fight to death and need a large cage. That cage shown with the little golden banded is toooooo small lah. The wheel is for dwarf, not near enough suitable for syrians.

At least Critter Trail and Habitrail is even better for Syrians, that is if talking about cage.... those cheap cages that we find actually aren't really that suitable. The best housing for a syrian would be either a 1.5ft tank/plastic aquarium or 2ft. A wheel that is 8inches is needed and jtl sells Wodent Wheels, so so suitable for Syrians.

It is natural for hamsters to hide and sleep often coz by nature, they hide to protect themselves and stay out of sight from danger.

actually harry hamster or prestige food is still affordable..it can last 2months for me..if she care so much about her hamster, dont be so stingy.
*
I agree with you. It's not even RM20.... hamsters eat like 1 to 2 teaspoons a day.... I don't think that is expensive. Keeping 1 or 2 hamsters is so economical... not like me LOL.... I got over 30 hamsters.... That's 16 Syrians, 12 RC, 4 WW and 2 robos....

Let me see.... food alone.... 2 bags of Prestige, 1 2.2kg Habitrail, 500g mynah food, 1 bag Harry Hamster, 300g dog kibble, extra wheat grains and millet...... That's food for them for a month.... but I do not feed that alone, they do get lots of fresh veggies. As hamsters do not eat a whole lot of dried food, giving 1 tablespoon for each hamster, that is about enough.

I cannot tell the exact amount of money I spend, but it is alot and I'm still a student.... I don't mind not getting some luxury items coz my pets need to eat. So for those who cannot even afford a bag of Prestige or Harry Hamster.... is damn weird loh.... compared to me.... LOL.... Now I got this addiction to get Syrians.... and worst is they are solitary. To make keep them economically, I use storage boxes and also whatever cage I can use that is at home.

Mealworms.... you can give once a week or twice a week.... or even everyday but never give more than 1 if you feed everyday..... mealworms are high in fat, something like sunflower seeds. But of course the protein is higher and better than just seeds.

In Malaysia very unpredictable loh.... that's why all the WW we see, they don't really look that great. Compared to those overseas, ours would have sharp noses, small eyes.... no bullet shape bodies.... colour also a bit off. So when breeding, need to choose carefully.

So far I have never seen any WW suitable for breeding after I stopped breeding WW. I'm still in the look out for good quality WW.

Anyway, Nos.... I actually do have an Opal RC.... was bought from Pets Wonderland but it was the only 1 in the whole batch. RCs comes in many colours but it is very difficult to find all the varieties.

Winter Whites can be territorial.... it is still best to house WW alone.... if in a pair, you need a very very big cage so they can have their own space.

Once you find them fighting aggressively, there is little chance of reintroducing them again. Just get another cage.

Hamsters give birth on average around 18 days. But they can give birth early or later.... just a few days difference.

Anyway, those cages sold by petshops.... they aren't always good, especially the locally made cheap ones with mesh bars at the bottom and mesh bars for the 2nd and 3rd floor. Change to a tank or a good quality cage like Habitrail or Critter Trail or even WILD brand. Don't settle for those cheap ones. A plastic aquarium or storage box or glass aquarium is more suitable.

Those metal bar ladders and mesh can hurt hamsters.... so better don't risk it coz you wanna save a bit of money.

Definately not coz those sand r salty....
Salty stuffs r bad for animal fur laugh.gif
*
That is not the answer lah.... LOL.... sand is not for eating so why say it can damage fur?

The sand from the beach is full of bacteria, also it doesn't absorb body oils. That is why it is not suitable. Also it is rough, it can hurt their paws. The beach sand is not absorbent, so it cannot absorb pee easily, making it prone for germs and bacteria to grow which can lead to mold or fungus.... which can cause health problems to the hamster.

To the person who just bought 2 hamsters. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE learn your hamster's species. Do not take for granted that they would be ok. And I hope they are not male and female..... don't be an irresponsible/impulse breeder.....
