No. Don't give yogurt drinks. Too high in sugar. Any process human food or junk food or snacks are bad for hamsters.

Although cute, your hamsters are housed in an unsafe cage. Wire bottom! Please take away the wire grating. It hurts their feet. For 2 WW... if your cage is those kinda small cages that you get from petshops, then it is too small for them.

Yes, Ovo only can fit 1 syrian. But the ventilation is not so good. If the day is warm, it can be too hot inside. Is like an oven.

It is not healthy to keep hamsters or any rodent in bed rooms coz of bacteria that can cause breathing problems. Also.... who knows if the type of bacteria your rodent carries is the worst type? It can cause more health damage.....

But OVO is never good..... people may tell you that if you keep a hamster in an OVO, you won't be able to smell the hamster's bedding.... but you put yourself in the hamsters shoes.... would you like it if someone lock you in a room with a very tiny window. Also, imagine yourself pee and poo in that same room with no toilet or flushing.... OVO has very little air holes. It only looks good but doesn't give enough air circulation for the hamster. In the end, it lives in it's own excrement smell. Not a wise choise. Habitrails older cages like Safari, Playground, Mini and Space Station are much better cages compared to OVO.

Don't choose a cage coz you think it looks modern and nice to you, choose a cage that benefits your hamster's health and quality of life.

Crepuscular is also another term for hamsters. Meaning active during dusk and dawn but we see more towards nocturnal coz once they are awake, they will stay and be active till dawn.

Other Habitrail cages also got tunnels. Did I say the tunnels are bad? Burrowing and Tunneling is of course what hamsters do naturally but the air holes in OVO is too little. Also, hamsters do know where to pee and poo in the wild and when they are active, they are running about in their myriad of tunnels and also above ground foraging for food. So they get plenty of fresh air. In captivity, not every hamster knows where to pee and poo correctly. Anyway, you wrote about the tunneling and how OVO is natural for hamsters is coz it says so on the box. Well, mayvb OVO to you is no problem but I have already seen 2 cases where OVO is bad.

As for those who are traveling, be warn. If you use a plastic tank or the OVO carrier, do not travel in a bus or when walking in the heat. Your hamster may heat up and die, this is also from personal experience. Even in the shade, a hamster can get heat stroke coz the ventilation is not enough and plastic can act like an oven coz it traps heat.

Get a carrier cage. The smallest cage you can find that is easy to carry. I believe it can be found at most petshops for RM10 or below.

Anyway, here are a few things I have dugged up from the Net. Yes, there would be a group of people that agree with OVO, but there would be a group that do not.

review on the OVO. Bad water bottle

reviews on the cage.

If you were to connect an OVO with a Safari or Critter Trail or some other wire caged, it would be good coz this gives a chance for the hamster to have some breathing space and also more room to roam about.

QUOTE(anderyna @ Mar 28 2008, 03:38 PM)
when you are going somewhere else to stay, like 2-3 days, did you bring the ham ham along [ if you the only one that takes care of them, no ppl to ask favour for taking care]??
*
If it is 2 to 3 days, and you are traveling long distance like 2 hour car ride, then do not bring along. Hamsters are hoarders, so they can stay alive for a week if you leave a big bowl of food and a bottle of water. If you are going away for a week, then best bring along of leave with a friend or a boarding place.

QUOTE(bidangayah @ Mar 28 2008, 05:43 PM)
after the mom delivered, the male can put in the same cage already or theres a duration mom need to be alone with the kids?
*
Congrats.

Don't put the male together. You can only put the male back after 4 months IF you want to breed back. You know why? Coz you risk the female dying early from continuous breeding. Please breed responsibly and keep them responsibly, do not turn a deaf ear at our words. We advice you coz we care more for the animal.

Read up on breeding. You are still green, not enough knowledge.

You can only breed hamsters the max is 3 times a year but this will cause the female to get serious health problems and die young. Stick to breeding twice a year only.

yeah, its like can spray on them, then they will become clean, i didnt buy, coz i scared it's useless..haha..i got buy bath sand, i put it inside their house, but the next day the bath sand all come out from their house.
*
Is useless wan. If you want robos and other dwarfs to stay clean, just provide a weekly sand bath. For Syrians, you can use a wet cloth to wipe them down. That's about it. Waste money only those sprays.... powder is ok but not spray.

QUOTE(lil`pumpkinz @ Mar 28 2008, 02:04 PM)
Do they get hungry very fast?
I might be going home late tonight, am afraid they will die in hunger sad.gif

Yea, all hammies being booked bt I still have another 8 newborn baby hammies smile.gif Feel sad to give them away but I have to cry.gif
*
That's why breeding is painful if you love your pets.... so better not to breed rite?

QUOTE(neshie @ Mar 28 2008, 09:18 PM)
hi, i have a question to ask. =x my winter white pee's at a corner, and i bought him a toilet thingy thingy, but the problem is that sometimes he pees there, then sometimes at a corner. I tried putting the bedding that has his pee in the box, but then he doesn't wanna pee in there. -______-"
help please? ><
*
Coz the smell of the old pee is still at the corner mah. To get rid of the pee, you have to soak your cage bottom with white vinegar overnight. It will get rid of the dried pee stains, smell and bacteria.

But just to let you know, hamsters choose themselves on where they wanna pee and poo. They are not dogs that can listen and understand commands.

No prob. Remember ah, white vinegar. It dissolves the pee stains.... overnight everything will clear up. I usually do this. White vinegar also not that expensive.

Help! My little breadcrumb looks sick!  cry.gif

This is how she looked like a few days ago. Healthy and happy.
user posted image

I changed its bedding on Tuesday (25 March) and cleaned its cage. Then on Thursday (27 March) at night I noticed that there was a lot of ants in the food bowl. And i noticed that Breadcrumb was not in her house (i posted  a picture of my tank some posts earlier) but hiding behind the wheel. Then i noticed that she was a bit not as active.

Then today, her eyes refused to open and she walks all wobbly. what should I do?  cry.gif Send her to the vet? Where is the nearest vet in Kota Damansara?
*
Your hamster is sick. It is not caused by ants.... sickness can come about from bacteria, poor immune system, infection, allergies.... is she ok now? Bring to a vet, I would suggest Hands and Paws that is at Aman Suria. Look at the vet list thread. Got contact there. Anyway, you should feed her with some Gatorade diluted 1:1 to water, or glucose water helps too.

There are no dwarfs for sale. Got Syrians by Pet Family but super duper underage and tiny. Don't buy.

Tomorrow last day. Prestige and Kaytee on display there, cheaper than normal. Lots of dogfood samples, easily can get for hamster and hedgehogs.

You can't. Very easy to get caught if you bring into Singapore.... if you wanna bring legally, the cost may be as costly as buying 20 or 40 hamsters.... if you are working there for a year or 2, then get your hamster there. But if you gonna work for less than a year..... might as well you come back only keep.

anyone know what can we use to remove urine stains in the cage? I use liquid soap when I clean the cage, it can't help me to remove urine stains.
*
Go to the super market, buy a bottle of cheap white vinegar. It is normaly artificial white vinegar, not costly too. What you should do is pour about 0.5cm depth of white vinegar into your cage, leave it overnight. The vinegar would dissolve the the solid pee stain.

Washing liquid, bleach, washing powder.... all these only can wash off oil and normal dirt, but it doesn't wash off harden stains no matter how long you soak.

Of course. Nice banded male with long fur around his bum area. His fur will grow longer later. Males have longer fur than females.

One of my WW passed away yesterday. I think kena cancer la.
She had a growth like tumour near her mouth.
The growth burst a day before yesterday.
She struggled, could hardly walk. Eyes half closed all the time.
Passed away at about 5pm yesterday.
*
RIP to her, my late gerbil also died from tumour. Actually, not all tumours are cancerous. Some are just growths.

Erm.... those are not WW lah... they are RC. 3 are agouti, 1 is albino..... LOL.... WW are different in colour, markings and body shape.

Anyway, the so called "winter gold" we have here are called Puddings. Already stated in the 1st page lah. They are not pure WW, they are hybrids and their colours will fade into a dull colour when older. They do not keep their orangeness. The character also is a bit of both, and puddings tend to become over weight easily so you must be careful of feeding sun flower seeds. Since WW are prone to glaucoma and RC to diabetes, a pudding have a risk of suffering either one or both when older..... Not every pudding lah coz I did say risk.

Yes, tumours are common. A few of my pet mice had lumps on their bodies, 2 gerbils died from tumour (1 face tumour, 1 scent gland tumour), my friend's hamster had a tumour on it's chin....

Wah.... you dun wanna travel meh? LOL, I stay at Setapak, I also buy Prestige and I take public transport summore to buy them. How many bags you want? I can help you get.

Breeder Celect is of course WAYYYY better than Chipsy lah.... Read the 1st page for bedding review.

Seen it before in Pet Lovers (Sunway Pyramid) and Pet Safari (Ikano). Wanna to try this and woody pets for my hammies too, but gotta finish the Breeder Celect first cos we bought the biggest pack from Pet Shack tongue.gif
*
Breeder's Celect and Back2Nature is the same. I won't use Woody Pet coz it becomes dusty after it gets wet. It caused allergy reactions to my gerbils, causing bloody noses. It also causes dry skin to my hedgehogs. Only wise to use Woody Pet for the litter box or toilet, not the whole tank. I still think it is better for you to stick with Breeder Celect.

Woody Pet is good coz absorbent... but from experience, it will become dusty loh. I only use Woody Pet for my hedgehog's litter box.
