Seems a lot has changed since I bought back my car in 2003....

Getting an AP was very easy. Got mine in a day. As long as you have all the documents you should be fine. Same conditions like now, 9 months ownership, studying overseas for at least a year, etc. They'll also want to see your road tax and insurance overseas.

Customs was a headache though. At the time, my 1.8L Lancer was taxed at 170%!!! To compound the problem further, the customs will value the car THEMSELVES, not the value that you bought the car! They kept insisting using the Japanese price of a Lancer instead of the price of my Australian-assembled Lancer which was much cheaper. You can show your receipt, invoice, whatever, and they'll still ignore it and use their price.

Luckily though, the value of the car is negotiable. They'll consider depreciation, and of course deduct the value of the tax you paid overseas. I ended up paying about 90% of the value of the car for the customs duty, which is still quite high but better than paying 170%.....  sweat.gif  biggrin.gif

Bro (not sure u still reading this thread), u said u end up paying only 90%. Did custom reduced the import/excise/sales tax from 170% to 90%, but still maintain the value of the car as they valued it themselves?
OR, they still maintain the import/excise/sales tax but reduced the value of the car, which effectively will reduce the tax percentage?
Anyone else knows how custom works?

yup, looking for the same feedback. ... the best is to call custom and ask. But, not sure if they are willing to declare that they can give discount. Maybe I'll try call next week ... if not everyone is on Eid holiday

I have a question. Is it really necessary to have a job waiting for you in Malaysia before you can export your car from overseas? And must you be permanently in M'sia before you can do so?

No need, as long you are a Malaysian, and you can use the AP only once in your life-time..... but the car will be under your name/cannot change ownership for 3 years

Even if there is no tax and you got your car for free and no AP is required... the shipping cost alone would make the car not worth it. The AP alone is worth RM 10 to 20k to some (as charged by the AP Kings)...

In UK.... get a Merc/Beemer/Scooby/Evo

I just need a second hand Proton to start working and in the UK it's really cheap. So you are not really sure if there is tax on Protons from UK then?

Not sure... but by right there should not be import and excise duty imposed... May be just the 10% sales tax is liable... Not sure if an AP is required...

It is depend on how good your negotiation skill is, or if you know some one inside, or if you know how to use the hanky panky approach.

my wife said she saw a new Ford Mustang w/California plates being driven by and older caucasian man somewhere in Penang.

Did not even have the Malaysia plates on it. That's gotta be illegal. But have to admit that the Mustang would be more rare than a Ferrari F430, or Bentley.

I have recently purchased an Evo X in Australia, could anyone please give me an idea how much tax I need to pay if I bring the car back next year. I paid AUD70,000 which approximately RM170,000 with current currency rate.

Cheers

Rough estimates...

Assuming that your car would be 1 year old (more than 12 months, 24% depreciation, more than 9 mnths, 20% dep.).

FOB val. (depends on custom list)... AUD60k -24%= AUD45.6k

CIF val. = AUD45.6k+ AUD684+RM1200 = roughly AUD46.8k

Tax = CIF x 157.4% = AUD 73.6k

or should be around 130% (instead of 157.4%) for... AUD 60.8k...

The tax will based on the purchase price or the current market price? Evo X in Malaysia is selling around 300k but from your calculation, it seem like the car will be more expensive than buy one in Malaysia!

This sound ridiculous, why the gov give an AP to everyone work or study overseas but tax them more than a car dealers have.

You can get an Evo X in most of the city in Australia, if not you still can buy from interstate.

Gtr35 in Australia is currently selling around AUD175,000.

Added on October 27, 2008, 6:07 amDoes anyone know the custom department phone number I can call in regard to the tax?

I need all your guys comment, please tell me is it worth to send my EVO X back to Malaysia? Cheers
