The tax will based on the purchase price or the current market price? Evo X in Malaysia is selling around 300k but from your calculation, it seem like the car will be more expensive than buy one in Malaysia!

This sound ridiculous, why the gov give an AP to everyone work or study overseas but tax them more than a car dealers have.

You can get an Evo X in most of the city in Australia, if not you still can buy from interstate.

Gtr35 in Australia is currently selling around AUD175,000.

Added on October 27, 2008, 6:07 amDoes anyone know the custom department phone number I can call in regard to the tax?

I need all your guys comment,  please tell me is it worth to send my EVO X back to Malaysia? Cheers
Based on the custom list... If you can get the dealer list price (from Malaysia) I bet it will be declared well below AUD70k
In Japan the lowest end EvoX is AUD51k (before the eco/currency crisis would have been much lower), custom's price list should be below this...
For Aussie cars however you maybe taxed differently, custom officer may add additional cost to the car if they are extra accessories/ICE/Rims, though I escape this scrutiny and my car passed even if I had diamond encrusted rims, (depends on the custom's office mood, I guess).

Custom's office phone and e-mail are available on their web page site. You could negotiate with them to lower their evaluated tax price, I got a 40% discount on my tax.

With the lower AUD it is are cheaper to buy older stocks (with foreign money) before new stocks come.

Do you mind if I ask what kind of car you brought back to Malaysia and where was it from? How much it cost all up for your car, does it still cheaper than those in Malaysia market?

I did try the phone number in the custom web site but the guy asked me to ring another number. Then I called the number he gave, the person ask me to call another number again, it would never end. It seems like those people don’t know what they are doing, very frustrating.

What do you mean by old stock? Do you think I should send my car back or I shouldn’t?

PMed you, lower AUD value now, imports from Jp would be more expensive as Yen now at a 13 (or more) year high. I would think the higher cost would be passed to customers.. Yen is about 35% more to RM a year and 2 months ago.

Much less then compared to a lower end spec similar model in Mal, but timing on the depreciation val. must be considered

I don't think I will be still sending my car back anymore. No point to pay the f*king tax. Should tell the gov cancel the personal AP, giving you AP but still want to tax you sky high. They just try to rip off their own citizen by money

The AP kings are making a profit selling these permits... RM10 to 20k of easy money per permit, Gov earns tax, privilege idividuals earns AP payment, all from the pockets of Citizens...

There is a Gov program in which professionals working overseas can bring back a vehicle tax free... as an incentive to prevent brain drain...

Quick question. Let's say i buy a 2nd hand car, then how will it's age be calculated? The year that I buy the car or the year the previous owner buy it?

The car needs to be yours for 9 months before you qualify for AP. The age of the car is calculated from the month it is rolled out from the factory.

I have got a question here, if I bring back a BMW M3 about 9 years old and based on the depreciation table "10% for the following 12 months after 72 months", does it mean that the car will have 100% depreciation and it will be free tax?

10% depreciation to the value of previous year..
year 6 = 30% left
year 7 = 27% left
year 8 = 24.3% left
year 9 = 21.87% left
year 10 = 19.68% left...

and so on...

As you see its a reverse log curve, it will take infinite number of years before it is tax free...

I called custom and ask about the professionals working overseas tax free, they told me they haven't got this program. Only a profesional foreigner can get a tax free if they apply the malaysia second home program. How many foreigner will do that, I won't do this if I got the money. I'm sure if malaysia do this to it own citizen, definitely can attract lots of young professional going back.

By the way, is anyone know roughly the custom market list of the 2001-3 BMW M3?

Stay(study/work, but not as tourist) for more than 12 mnths, own the car for more than 9 mnths, and you can get one AP to bring only one car.

Your Malaysian wife/husband/family/friend (with the same criteria) would need to apply for another.

The car needs to be under the name of the AP holder for 2 years, and cannot be transferred in that period.

But taxes still apply right? You just get the permission to bring back the car, but I don't think u'll get any reduction in taxes. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Yes, taxes (import, excise and sales) still apply, you only escape the artificial "tax" of the AP (which is essentially a free permit issue by the gov.).

If you want to escape huge taxes, get a hybrid (2009 budget).

Beast, does that hybrid tax exemption apply to the "student AP"? I thought it only apply to the grey importers.
And inm, these hybrid cars must be new when being brought in Malaysia. If use the student AP, definitely more than 9 months old car when u wan to bring into Malaysia.

Guys, those free tax for max 2 cars is under the Malaysian gov initiative to persuade professional working overseas to come back
