Outdated info...

Japanese made car get 25% off the initial value too....... then you times the value of the car with engine capacity in the table above... that would be the tax that you need to pay...

BeastX .. great info

I'm currently in UK and planning to bring back car as most of u all in this forum.

Don't mean to question your info reliability but where does it officially say that Japanese made car get 25%?
If it does, u minus 25% to the FOB right? that's before calculating import, excise and sales tax.
ie FOB = (value car as brand new - 15%) X depreciation X 75% (jap cars)
Does this 25% discount applies if u import Jap made car from UK? or only Jap made cars imported directly from Jap.
How about Jap brand cars but manufactured not in Jap (dont know if there is such thing ..but say Nissan Qashqai)

U talked about aprox 40% discount from custom, that is discount to the total tax ie (import duty + excise duty + sales tax) X 60% OR
tax down to only 40%?

Cheers

It is not minus 25% from FOB... It was minus 25% from "price of the car in the year it was made"... This calculation was from someone's tax calculation back in 2004.. My car tax calculation in May of this year, got only a 15% off instead of 25%, it was classified as "keuntungan peralihan".

You can appeal for the FOB value of the car (My case) to be reduced and the overall discount you can get would be probably get up to 40% off the total tax (import duty + excise duty + sales tax), then without appeal. There are previous examples (2004 case) where 20 to 30% discounts was applied to the final tax and not FOB value. I guess this would depend on the custom officer...

Depends on the situation... a Discount on the FOB value may reduce the overall tax more then discount to the final tax.. especially for high CC car (3L and above).

For argument sake, I have done calculation based on your info on the BMW X5 (3L) BRAND NEW from UK
UPDATED based on BeastX comment about the insurance being 1.5% not 15%

Compare that against what X5 is being sold in Malaysia by authorized dealer which just RM 570k

Doesn't make sense. I guess the only way the car value can be 570k is only if CIF value is reduced via discount from custom or under declare or custom use BMW factory frice

I got this "gazetted car pricelist for 2006" over the Internet. This list provide CIF value for most CBU and X5 is just RM161k.
Put 161k into the calculation, the total cost would be RM 471k
That would be more reasonable ... dealership take 100k profit smile.gif

Anyway, BeastX which department of the custom did you go to for this purpose.
Maybe I should ask then what would be CIF value my shortlist cars smile.gif?

Seems a lot has changed since I bought back my car in 2003....

Getting an AP was very easy. Got mine in a day. As long as you have all the documents you should be fine. Same conditions like now, 9 months ownership, studying overseas for at least a year, etc. They'll also want to see your road tax and insurance overseas.

Customs was a headache though. At the time, my 1.8L Lancer was taxed at 170%!!! To compound the problem further, the customs will value the car THEMSELVES, not the value that you bought the car! They kept insisting using the Japanese price of a Lancer instead of the price of my Australian-assembled Lancer which was much cheaper. You can show your receipt, invoice, whatever, and they'll still ignore it and use their price.

Luckily though, the value of the car is negotiable. They'll consider depreciation, and of course deduct the value of the tax you paid overseas. I ended up paying about 90% of the value of the car for the customs duty, which is still quite high but better than paying 170%.....  sweat.gif  biggrin.gif

Bro (not sure u still reading this thread), u said u end up paying only 90%. Did custom reduced the import/excise/sales tax from 170% to 90%, but still maintain the value of the car as they valued it themselves?
OR, they still maintain the import/excise/sales tax but reduced the value of the car, which effectively will reduce the tax percentage?
Anyone else knows how custom works?

want to ask you guys if you know about this...is it posibble for Custom Department to give discount on import duty?..let say car above 3000cc the tax only is about 200% but they calculate only 150%...I asked somebody in other forum,he said posibble..

yup, looking for the same feedback. ... the best is to call custom and ask. But, not sure if they are willing to declare that they can give discount. Maybe I'll try call next week ... if not everyone is on Eid holiday

Yes, taxes (import, excise and sales) still apply, you only escape the artificial "tax" of the AP (which is essentially a free permit issue by the gov.).

If you want to escape huge taxes, get a hybrid (2009 budget).
*
Beast, does that hybrid tax exemption apply to the "student AP"? I thought it only apply to the grey importers.
And inm, these hybrid cars must be new when being brought in Malaysia. If use the student AP, definitely more than 9 months old car when u wan to bring into Malaysia.

Guys, those free tax for max 2 cars is under the Malaysian gov initiative to persuade professional working overseas to come back

It is good that you posted the link on working professionals Malaysian ...

The 100% import duty and 50% excise duty off maybe applicable to Student AP too... As Honda MY are revising their Hybrid pricing... a RM40k price cut... Prius are 10 years old already... Importing one could be cheap, but a functioning/new battery maybe needed...
*
Yup, working pros only ... but I have not personally meet or talk to anyone who had gone through this process before.

As you said, that's Honda MY pricing .... they get that tax reduction too, hence the price cut.
Still not convinced the student AP will get the examption. Nonetheless, I'm more than happy if the tax exemption applies. Anyone can share this info from the official source?

R u referring to a new Prius or a 10 yo recon Prius? If its new I'm sure you dont need a new battery.
