Haha... well, no one (well, hardly anyone) does over the counter banking nowadays. My bankers come to me for signatures on certain important documents, and for all other transactions, it's via a phone call and voice log.

They will even exchange new notes in advance for me (eg for CNY) and I'll pay them back in cash, when they bring the complimentary red packets to the house.

I can't remember the last time I stepped into a bank... probably the time when I helped my domestic helper open a bank account...

I guess those in the private banking echelon would have very little reasons to go to one. icon_rolleyes.gif

Actually, I think even at Privilege/Premier/Priority level, the RM would be falling over themselves to get your business and (as Ramjade would say) "take your money".

Yes the RM did try. But I am a noob. Not in a habit to put money in places where I have no understanding. smile.gif

I'm also a noob. And I follow your instinct as well ... only invest in things I understand. Rather make less than to lose everything.

Fully agree. Better be safe than caught with the pants down. Seen it many times. Also not keen to place anything not within the country of domicile. If get called home, the family will have issues.
A modest return is good enough, protecting what we have is far important than trying to multiply it.

I don't have the direct answer with exactly the same scenario (i.e. open HK account from Malaysia); but a similar one (i.e. open AU account from Malaysia). TL;DR I don't know SC Bank but only HSBC, and below are my scenarios if it helps anyone.

Context, I'm HSBC Premier Customer in MY and had pre-existing relationship with HSBC HK (basic account but enjoys same premier privilege). Note, it's basic premier (200k AUM), not the Elite premier (3mil AUM).

So when I opened my HSBC AU account, I reached out to my Premier Relationship Manager (basically a call center only now...) and I did everything from Malaysia to open my HSBC AU account. Basically they can't do much also, other than collect basic info and then route everything to HSBC INTERNATIONAL banking team. From there on, a separate team reached out to me to finalize the application and sent me a virtual link (online forms) to complete the process.

There, I proceed to apply my HSBC AU account with referral from International Banking team and I applied for BASIC HSBC AU account foreseeing that I may or may not lose my Premier status in near future (if I migrate). It's all done within 3 months and now I have:

- HSBC Premier account (MY)
- HSBC Basic account (HK) - enjoys premier from MY
- HSBC Everyday Global account (AU) - enjoys premier from MY
*
On this one - just realized that HSBC now has fully online self-service to open international account, in case if anyone ever stumbles into this similar situation laugh.gif

Leaving this link here: https://internationalservices.hsbc.com/over.../where-to-open/

Select your current premier country and intended overseas country to open bank account and it'll tell you the criteria (incl. whether if there's separate requirement to qualify for waivers etc.)

Here is a more comprehensive list of privileges I'm able to tap into, for Private Banking. In decreasing order of "added benefits":

Maybank
1. Airport transfers (limited to 12 times per private banking client, so that's 24 times for wife and me)
2. Dunno how many double/triple Treats Points if I buy air tickets using the Diamante Visa Infinite Card (points never expire) and free conversion to KFlyer Points
3. Free Diamante Visa Infinite forever
4. Free Priority Pass Lounge Access (useful for airports without dedicated SQ Silver Kris lounges)
5. Access to free concert (eg Taylor Swift) and soccer (eg Liverpool's recent visit) events in Singapore & use of corporate suite @ the Singapore National Stadium
6. Access to IPO Bonds/FCN/preferential credit line
7. Access to Cornerstone Investor opportunities
8. Additional useless perks like exclusive use of MBB' private lounges at various locations in Singapore (but the best is right in the CBD and is super inconvenient) for free barista coffee and snacks and soft drinks

DBS
1. Unlimited airport transfers
2. Priority Check in at Changi T2 (useful if I ever fly Malaysia Airlines)
3. Use of private lounges at T3 & T2 (even if I fly economy)
4. Access to certain Income Funds (similar to annuities, but paying out 8% - 10% annually, with capital protection)
5. Access to IPO Bonds/FCN/preferential credit line
6. Access to Cornerstone Investor opportunities
7. Additional useless perks like exclusive use of DBS' private lounges at various locations in Singapore for free barista coffee and snacks and soft drinks
8. The welcome pack consisted of lifestyle vouchers like free grooming sessions (for him and her), free spa visits - none of which I had time to use and have all long expired

UOB
1. Airport transfers (I have to inform my banker and the total number of such free transfers depend on the value of my AUM)
2. Preferential fixed deposit/savings rates (while the war chest is being built up) - at the moment, I'm getting 3.3% on my savings account (neither DBS nor MBB offer this) with no lock in & this is even better than OCBC's Premier Dividend, as I can withdraw and transact without losing that month's interest
3. Access to IPO Bonds/FCN/preferential credit line
4. Access to Cornerstone Investor opportunities

No
Even though my car full of stickers on my windshield
The guard will stop you if you head in different direction after parking

Oh, good. At least the bank has the good sense to weed out abusers.

Premier customer is unlikely to spend too long time in the bank and certainly not everyday. It is almost certain guard will be instructed to lock your car.

I had mine activated by MBB Customer Service officer in Malaysia because I’m based in Singapore.

So yes, it can be done. Whether they’ll entertain someone who is based in Malaysia is debatable…
