Wassup. Got a question for all you guys here.

I might be getting a D40 in the next few days as a replacement for my Powershot A410. Before I shell out close to 2K for this interesting piece, I need everyone's opinion to the following questions:

1. My favourite kind of pictures are the ones that evolve around architecture (buildings and static objects), underwater life as well as low light environments with sombre settings. As I'm definitely going to be in a tight budget after buying just the basic kit, how long do you think the kit lens will last for the 3 aforementioned subjects? I'm a realistic person, so I don't expect to get the ultimate results with such a cheap beginner's set. I was hoping that the kit lens would be a good all rounder for maybe a year or so.

2. How often should I clean the sensor? I heard the ballpark figure should be roughly 7-8 months. And if the need should arise, where can I go to get them serviced?

3. Is it true that there is a lifespan for the lenses? I remembered someone quoting a figure of around 10,000 shots for the kit one. Is there any way to prolong it's service life?

More to come. Many thanks in advance for your time and advice.

kit lens is good enuf for architecture. unless u wanna go wider. buy tripod it will help you to shoot both arc and in low light. underwater dunno sorry. but the case for underwater is pricey..
for sensor cleaning service you can go to NSC. its free. but i just clean it by myself.
lifespan for lens? or for shutter? shutter can go up to 50k and above . lens i think u can use it in a very long time.
about 10 year maybe thumbup.gif . that y got 10 in recycle tongue.gif

wowowow.... CPL can be very effective at times... try search up one of the issues of DCM about filters...it shows you the before and after pic of using the CPL... i guess if you shoot landscapes under strong sunlight it helps quite a bit smile.gif

I'm looking for a CPL filter now, I like the color of saturated blue sky very much and easier to show off the clouds in the sky! Well, still saving for one, probably can get one after CNY with ang pows. drool.gif

get the VR version, u need VR more in tele lens,
u can survive without VR in ur 18-55mm kit lens, but when the focal length gets bigger, the minor handshakes are amplified..

nikkor 55-200mm is the best affordable zoom lens u can get for nikon d40,
tamron 55-200mm is cheaper, but it cant autofocus with d40,
sigma 55-200mm can autofocus with d40, but it is just about the same price with nikkor,

that's the best affordable combination i could find unless u willing to pay Rm2.6k for nikkor 18-200mm VR..
save the hassle for changing lenses..

Guys, sorry for asking a noob question. Would like to know how possible to make D40 exposure time to have longer then 30seconds ?
The photo below using D40 with 10-20mm lens and exposure time of 22minutes. Yeah minutes not seconds.

How possible D40 can do that ? unsure.gif
If can, mind to teach how ? Any special equipment needed ?

today i lepak'ed around one of the OU camera shop.
lepak'ed about more than 1 hour and got some info about here and there.
yes, its true *duh* ratios between dslr and normal compact camera
is different, but some shops can overcome it, by editing it someway
using photoshop to fit them. and yah, there also selling my cheapo
cmera flash, rm88 summore. customer feedbacks 100% safe.

and by tomorrow i'll try to hunt around to find an inkjet printing
paper for my diy bounce card. very useful since my flash cant
rotate sideways though.

I dunno about D40 limitations, but you'll need a remote shutter release for super long exposures. Here's a 110 minutes exposure pic, from a D300 though. You can have a look here -> http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp...essage=26412521
