AppleCare+ is now available in Malaysia. Will start the discussion thread here.
https://www.apple.com/my/support/products/

Example
AppleCare+ for iPhone extends your coverage to two years from your AppleCare+ purchase date and adds unlimited incidents of accidental damage protection. Each incident is subject to a service fee.

Tips:
- You can purchase AppleCare+ together with your device at same time, either from Apple Authorized stores or Apple.
- If you have not purchased AppleCare+, you can purchase directly on the device which does not require any diagnostic from Apple, you just key in the payment info and coverage is activated immediately. If you bought it on the Apple website, you will need to perform a remote diagnostics for Apple to check your condition of the device.
- You have 60 days to purchase the AppleCare+ on your device from device activation date, and it shows up directly in the Settings. If you do it on the 55th day for example, your AppleCare+ starts on the 55th day and adds two more years of warranty coverage, so that will be a bonus 55 days of limited warranty coverage for you. However do note if any accidental damage happens within the first 55 days without the AppleCare+ plan then you are not covered.
- If you pass 60 days, you are not able to purchase directly anymore, probably you can contact Support to try to add them in (it may involve physical device inspection) but the coverage start date will probably start on your device activation date and not the day you bought the coverage plan. Your phone still has to be under the 1 year limited warranty.
- After subscribing, you can cancel the plan within 30 days and get a full refund. After 30 days, the refund will be calculated prorated based on remaining time left on the AppleCare+ plan, the value of the refund can be obtained from Apple Support.
- This plan does not cover cosmetic damages eg dents or scratches. If there are failure in components, it will be a free repair or replacement just like how the limited warranty works. If there is an accidental damage, then a service fee applies which is much much lower than out of warranty service fee.
- Free Battery replacement will only happen if battery health is below 80 percent when your coverage plan is still active.
- You may opt for express replacement, meaning a new refurbished phone will be shipped to you immediately, and your credit card will put a temporary hold on the new phone expenses, until you return your broken device (and pay the subsidised replacement fee) to Apple, then the hold will be cleared.
- There is currently no monthly payment option yet like the plan in the US, and also no theft protection plan in Malaysia.
- Students can get cheaper protection plans using UniDAYS for iPad and Macs only but it has to be bought together at same time with the device on the education shop portal.

Correct me if I’m wrong on the points above.

From what I read online from most users (from other countries) who used AppleCare+, the experience seemed positive. Apple repair/(replace with refurbished units) with no questions asked when they presented their broken device. It’s like an insurance plan, where we only use it when we need it, just for the peace of mind.

This plan is pretty new to our country so not sure who in Malaysia claim it yet. Since Apple Store is going to open in Malaysia soon, it should be a better claim experience. Plus you can do an express replacement where the new replacement device is shipped to you, and you only return your broken device when you receive the replacement device, you don’t even need to visit any stores.

Thats the thing, there's no success stories so far in Malaysia, Ive gone through the T&C it looks very promising but I am worried they going to twist around the stuff in T&C to make our repairs ineligible.

Here's the T&C: https://www.apple.com/legal/sales-support/a...lus_myen_tc.pdf

Ive spoken to their support, theft & loss is not covered.. I think thats kinda big deal when you paying premium insurance for your stuff. So I've been looking alternative for electronic device insurance.. and there's only one offered by Allianz.

So I'm torn between this two.

I would think claiming from Apple is much much easier compared to insurance company eg Allianz. Most of the post mentioned that apple don’t even ask how the device was broken, just exchanged and no questions ask. Even in our neighbouring country SG they just sent new device when their device break, no questions asked, can look up in hardwarezone. I believe Apple don’t want to have their company or AppleCare+ to have a bad rep too.

Personal experience with apple is quite positive, even sometimes when I’m out of limited warranty by a few days, they still make a special exception for me and have the authorized reseller replaced the device for me. Because of that now I got AppleCare+ cause I’m worried the device might have defect past the 1 year limited warranty, although the chances are quite slim. Hopefully they allow extension through monthly payment once past the 2/3 years period like other country soon.

The loss and theft insurance from AppleCare+ if it ever launch here will be much more expensive than the stated price. For iPhone Pro model, it was 269USD compared to the normal 199USD AppleCare+. Unfortunately only a handful of country has this and not even our neighbour Singapore or Thailand: AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss is available only for iPhone in Australia, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

I’ll add another benefit here: by going through Apple, you know you are getting genuine parts and excellent customer service.

Right now Apple made repair so hard by having the parts serialised that even many local repair shop don’t feel like repairing Apple devices anymore. Because after repair, they might get notification that this part is not genuine, or have some functionality eg TrueTone or FaceID suddenly disabled.
Even if they do, they normally carry inferior parts eg replacing the iPhone screen to LCD instead of OLED, or having you to agree to have the non-genuine message pop up from time to time.

And then if you felt like you don’t want AppleCare+ anymore, call up Apple or contact Support to cancel and receive refund on the remaining days.

Will other insurance company provide the same level of service?

No idea, really need some inputs from those who are successfully repaired via AppleCare+ program, especially from Malaysia. Can Malaysia Applecare+ provide same level service like any other country?

I'm on the fence about buying AppleCare+ since I have 35 days left to decide. My 16" MacBook Pro would cost RM 1,799 for AppleCare+, which is quite hefty and represents 20% of the purchase price (I got mine at a discount).

So far, my experience with Apple laptops has been positive, as they tend to last with proper care. For instance, I had a cracked speaker on my MacBook Pro 15" (2015) and managed to replace it myself for only RM 50 using a YouTube guide.

I’m also not sure if I should I get the Apple Care+ for my AirPods Pro 2. I have 36 days to decide and I got it cheaper than the retail price - RM 828.

I’m a careful person but the left side of my gen 1 spoilt after 14 months of usage. I replaced it myself and recently it had cracking noise issue, hence I got the gen 2 now. My only worry that this problem will attack gen 2 too and it’s gonna be costly to replace it.

Yeah AppleCare+ is not cheap, it’s about 20-30 percent of the device price. So it comes with perks such as priority chat in Support, it covers the accessories eg cables adapters too (eg for iPad it covers even the Apple Pencil) etc. So it really depends on you, just like medical insurance or whichever insurance, they are not worth it until you actually need it and wished you had it.

If you divide it up it’s about RM50 a month for three years. If you can afford a MacBook, is RM50 worth peace of mind or you can put RM50 into savings.
In US, they could do it monthly and cancel whenever they don’t want it anymore. Here you can take it and ask for refund from Support when you don’t want the insurance anymore.

My AirPods Pro 2 is not eligible to buy the AppleCare+ anymore due to it pass 60 days, bought last year, but if I’m still eligible I will buy it.
But it depends on your use case, if you are heavy user, then can take it to replace the battery around the end period of the warranty when the heavy usage wears out the battery of the AirPods. They probably swapped a new one for you.

Edit: And if you add this in, then you probably can be rougher with your AirPods Pro 2 in the gym, or anywhere, and not worry about it as much.

I’m not a heavy user too because I also have a Sony XM5 headphone. hmm.gif Let me consider again but it seems worth to buy the Apple Care+ for AirPods. However, I won’t know about the battery health until I get it checked.

Nope, have asked TRX Apple employee before, for other country yes, but unfortunately in Malaysia cannot yet, think even Singapore can’t do it.

Different, that one probably covered under Switch/Urban Republic only, with very different T&Cs, prices and coverage.
AppleCare+ is covered by Apple so it can be brought to repair at any Apple outlet, or any apple authorized reseller eg Machines, Switch.

Just the other day I asked an employee at Apple TRX and gave her a scenario where which if I were to purchase a product from them - can I then bring that product to a Machines Service Centre for repair. She said no and I that would have to bring it back to TRX for repair. Are there no other Apple Service Centres?

If you buy from Machines you can send to both Machines Service Center and TRX Apple. In the background, Machines sends it to Apple to fix which is why usually it takes a long time. Now that Apple is here, when you purchase from Apple, you can just arrange to bring it to them directly. The turnaround time is a lot faster because essentially Machines just sends it back to Apple especially for the major issues.

Noted.

Thanks.

I’m looking to get the new iMac M4 and am thinking whether I should get the AppleCare+ or not. I think it’s good for portable items like iPhones or MacBooks and not so much for the iMacs as I’m not carrying it around?

According to Google reviews - Their Genius Bar service isn’t very good.

Apple care for accidental damage is more for portable items yes. (Recent news, someone's mbp damaged until folded, was denied coverage). But Apple Care is also extending warranty for hardware failures.

Whether you want to extend for that purpose, it's your call. Everyone is pretty split on this.

The only products I feel Apple Care+ is a “must buy” are the AirPods line, mainly because of their fragility and failure rates. For everything else it’s a “depends on your use case” kind of thing.

Went to the TRX store twice, first to get my M4 iPad Pro Apple Care+ (couldn't active online). Made an appointment, went in at the appointed time and had to still wait for more than half an hour for anyone to begin assist my case yawn.gif (Plus also witnessed 2 Apple Geniuses fighting on the spot to take my case)

Second time went in just to buy an adapter, grabbed the adapter I need and had to leave quickly but couldn't get anyone to attend me for payment. Maybe is their tactic to keep customers in their store as long as possible to spend money, idk la don't quote me. In a hurry, authorised reseller might be faster.

No cannot because each Apple Store depends on region got their own version. Like if from China be troublesome as they have 2 physical simcard slot when come to Malaysia if getting whole new unit then need to sacrifice an get the 1 simcard slot version..

Omg did they change the TnC? Last time for the MacBooks you are able to buy AppleCare anytime as long as within 1 year of your purchase (while your new device warranty is still active)

Just checked and saw the TnC mention must be within 60 days of purchase..

That is legacy AppleCare plan that was EOL the moment AppleCare+ enters our market. The normal plan doesn’t include accidental damage but only extension of warranty.

Now AppleCare+ is only valid to buy within 60 days.

AppleCare+ can be renewed before it expire, and it start on the date of purchase.

AppleCare+ can be renewed? Meaning we can potentially get lifetime warranty if we just keep renewing?

I thought they would continue selling both APC & APC+ together... I might just upgrade to MBP5 if the upgrades are worth it and get APC+ then sweat.gif
