Recently bought a 6500A unit and plugged in a MPEG-filled 320GB to try it out in my bedroom. Works good and enjoying so far. This weekend, I will swap the 320GB HD out and replace it with a 1.5TB HD. Have hooked it up to my home LAN (GbE) and had some problems accessing some of the shared folders on my main rig, but I think that could be due to lack of clear instructions and some problems with my main rig.
Is anyone using the 6500A to access shared folders on NAS boxes? I have a Synology DS408 which I want to use to stream my AV files all over my home, and would like to know success/failure stories. Thanks... If this works really well, I may buy a couple more units for my living room and my parents' house. |

greetings... I have my friends Dvico player with a 1TB HD installed in it. This has no content.
I have a bunch of .mkv files on my PC which i intend to place in the Dvico harddive. what is the best way to go about this? (pardon my newbie-ness in all of this) |

plug the usb cable from pc to the dvico...
the pc will see the dvico as a drive in it self (if the drive is already formatted, if haven't format to ntfs format) select the files u want than copy and paste .. that simple... QUOTE(yonggoh @ Mar 25 2009, 03:24 PM) |

QUOTE(yonggoh @ Mar 25 2009, 03:24 PM) greetings... I have my friends Dvico player with a 1TB HD installed in it. This has no content. I don't know if this is the best way, but what I did to my 320GB HD (and am currently doing to my 1.5TB HD) was hook it up to my PC via USB (I have one of those Vantec USB/eSATA ports that let you just plug in the HD) and then copied over the files (making sure the HD was formatted in NTFS) using Explorer. It took a long time. A really long time I have a bunch of .mkv files on my PC which i intend to place in the Dvico harddive. what is the best way to go about this? (pardon my newbie-ness in all of this) Another way would be to hook up the DVico player to your LAN (wired with Gb Ethernet preferably) and then copy it over (haven't done this yet, so I haven't learned the exact steps yet). I think you can also hook up the DVico box directly to your PC via USB (not 100% sure, as I didn't really read the entire manual). Perhaps someone with more experience than me can contribute their experiences about which method is fastest? I am inclined to think that the eSATA method is fastest (I don't have eSATA port on my main rig, so I used the USB connection) and doesn't tie down your network if you are copying large amounts of data (I copied over about 300GB to my 320GB, and for my 1.5TB, I have copied over about 500GB already, with another 300-400GB to go). But if you don't have many files to transfer then maybe doing it over the network without taking the HD out of the DVico box would be less hassle. |

Don't use Dvico to copy from ext HDD. (Which you ext hook up to dvico and use the remote to copy) It will take forever to copy.
Just connect the dvico to PC and copy. |

QUOTE(denhock @ Mar 26 2009, 12:14 AM) Hi, traveler, Thanks! I will try that tonight. Since I restrict access to the Synology NAS (user/password required), can I still access it from the DVico box? Do I need to make any changes in my DVico settings (they're generally at default)? I would normally try first and post a question later if needed, but I am at work now and can't try it out until later tonight.as you have synology NAS, you can update to the latest firmware (at least version DSM2.0 and above), you can use File station 2, upload the file from your local PC / external HDD to Synology NAS, this will more faster than through LAN ( FYI, one of our customer told about 2 days to transfer 500GB data through local LAN) ( gigabit will be faster but still take time) after that, you can enable NFS for this folder (your video) and you can start to watch video (event BlueRay movie) direct from NAS to DVICO TVIX. |

QUOTE(rx330 @ Mar 27 2009, 02:24 PM) Direct distance is probably around 6-7m; the two rooms are adjacent to each other with the bedroom's bathroom in between. My home is pre-wired, so I just installed a Giga switch at the point where the wires converged and then just plugged my DVico into the wall socket. The DVico box is just part of my ongoing home network project which includes (full-time file/media server, Skype phone, internet radio boxes, and possibly IP security cams). If things work out well (technically as well as financially), I want to look into a VPN link to my parents' home so they can access my movies/TV shows (dunno if possible, will read up on it at a later date). Maybe also look into the Slingbox as a way to get access to US-based sports channels (I really miss NCAA Div 1 football). As for your 2nd question, I have a lot of TV show box sets which are in SD DVD format, as well as my movie DVDs. I don't currently download content, but instead I am ripping the DVDs I already own. I also don't have HD-capable TVs in my home. My LCD TV in the bedroom is only 1366x768, while my projector is 1280x720. Besides, one benefit of encoding my own rips at the moment is that I can easily sync whatever I want to my iPod, making them portable. I plan to upgrade eventually but with the current economic situation, I am postponing my upgrade to HD. |

Hey, I have a somewhat similar setup to you (except I don't have so much diskspace yet).
Instead of a VPN link, you can look at setting up Orb (http://www.orb.com/) to share/stream your media... You can also use a pair of Linksys WRT54GL (with modded firmware to help you build a VPN link) But seriously, if you're on streamyx (which I guess, since the majority of us are on streamyx), the upload speed is only 384/512kbps which not so great.
