"In addition to the Sarawak Hydrogen Hub, SEDC Energy plans to develop a hydrogen production plant and refuelling station to support the Rembus Depot, an integral part of the Kuching Urban Transportation System (KUTS). This initiative involves signing tripartite agreements with Sarawak Metro Sdn Bhd and O&G firm ICE Petroleum Group, aiming to produce green hydrogen for local use. The Rembus Depot serves as the central hub for the Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART), contributing to KUTS.

Expected to be completed by 2025, the Rembus Depot plant anticipates producing about 1,900 tonnes of hydrogen annually, with an estimated construction cost ranging from RM400 million to RM500 million. ICE Petroleum will handle the engineering, procurement, construction, installation, and commissioning (EPCIC) aspects of the project, marking a significant step for the Kuala Lumpur-based oil and gas EPCC outfit."

KUCHING (Oct 25): All parties involved in the implementation of the Kuching Urban Transportation System (KUTS) project must collaborate closely to ensure its timely and successful completion, said Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin.

During his visit to several KUTS project construction sites recently, the Transport Minister emphasised the importance of teamwork and coordination between Sarawak Metro and various state agencies, as well as contractors involved, to deliver Kuching’s first modern and efficient public transport system.

Among the key locations visited were Rembus Depot and sites of stations along the Blue Line alignment at Sungai Kuap Bridge and near the Sarawak Heart Centre as well as the Interchange station at Simpang Tiga.

Lee stressed communication between Sarawak Metro and all relevant agencies is needed to overcome challenges and ensure the project remains on schedule.

“Sarawak Metro must monitor this project closely so that it can update on its progress continuously on a timely basis so that the public are kept abreast with its development,” he said.

He also expressed his confidence that the project would significantly transform Kuching’s public transportation landscape once completed.

Also present for the site visit were Transport Ministry permanent secretary Datu Wong Hee Sieng and representatives from several state agencies, including the State Financial Secretary’s Office, Economic Planning Unit Sarawak, State Implementation Monitoring Unit, Public Works Department Sarawak, Department of Irrigation and Drainage, and Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC).

Sarawak Metro, a wholly owned subsidiary of SEDC, has been entrusted by the Sarawak government to modernise public transport through the KUTS project.

Phase 1 of the project includes the development of three lines: the Blue Line from Rembus in Kota Samarahan to Hikmah Exchange in the city centre; the Red Line from Kuching Sentral to Pending; and the Green Line from Pending to Damai.

Construction of the first package for the Blue Line is expected to complete by the fourth quarter of 2025 and all three lines are scheduled to be fully completed by the end of 2027.

The backbone of the KUTS project is the introduction of the zero-emission Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) hydrogen vehicles.

The ART vehicles will be operated on dedicated lanes, meaning they will not share the lane with other road users.

The ART hydrogen vehicles will run on rubber tyres and hence the dedicated lanes will be trackless.

The lanes will mostly be at-grade (road level) while certain sections of the alignment will be elevated.

The ART operation will be supported by a network of feeder buses, which will also consist of hydrogen-powered vehicles to offer the ‘first mile and last mile’ connectivity for commuters.

KUCHING (Oct 25): Sarawak Metro Sdn Bhd (Sarawak Metro) held a road safety awareness campaign near the Rembus Depot along the Blue Line alignment yesterday.

Organised in collaboration with the contractor for the construction of Rembus Depot, AIU JV, the joint venture company comprised of Azam Sehasrat Sdn Bhd, IJM Construction Sdn Bhd, and Unique Deco Sdn Bhd, the campaign aimed to raise awareness of road safety practices among road users and construction workers in and around the Kuching Urban Transportation System (KUTS) project area.

It was supported by the Road Transport Department, Public Works Department Samarahan Division, Sarawak Economic Development Corporation, Department of Occupational Safety and Health Sarawak, Kota Samarahan Municipal Council, Samarahan District Office, Samarahan police, and Samarahan Division Resident’s Office.

The campaign emphasised the importance of adhering to traffic rules, safety guidelines, and signage, particularly near construction sites.

Sarawak Metro chief executive officer Mazli Mustaffa highlighted Sarawak Metro’s ongoing efforts to enhance road safety practices as the KUTS project progresses.

“Sarawak Metro will continue to promote safety habits among road users, particularly those traveling along our KUTS project alignment,” he said, reiterating the importance of observing traffic rules, road safety signage, and measures put in place near construction sites.

“We are doubling our efforts to create greater road safety awareness as we now go into full swing in implementing the project in Kuching and Kota Samarahan. Today’s (yesterday) campaign is organised with our contractor for the construction of the Rembus Depot and we are grateful for the support and commitment of our contractor and related agencies in promoting a road safety culture,” he said.

The campaign is part of Sarawak Metro’s larger strategy to ensure the safety of all road users, with a focus on creating safer practices among motorists, pedestrians, and construction workers involved in the project.

Road users were given goodie bags containing safety pamphlets and safety vests as a reminder of the importance of adhering to road safety guidelines.
