Kuching Urban Transportation System..what a mouthful…can shorten it to KUNTS. Owai……

Need more than 2 years to complete? And no tracks or tunnels or overpass. Just a glorified bendy bus.
*
Where the N came from? It's KUTS. Just one letter more than DAP, PAS, n same amount of letter in UMNO.

Sarawak Metro speeds up rail contract awards
By JACK WONG
    Construction
    Monday, 01 Jan 2024

KUCHING: Sarawak Metro Sdn Bhd has accelerated the award of contracts for the construction of Kuching Urban Transportation System (KUTS) project, handing out a third contract worth RM943mil to another Malaysia-China joint venture (JV) company.

The JV company comprises Sri Datai Construction (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd, JT JV Builders Sdn Bhd and CHEC Construction (M) Sdn Bhd.

The contract it secured is to build the infrastructure for the Red Line, one of the three transit lines under KUTS project.

Sarawak Metro received six bids for this work package at the close of the tender exercise on Oct 25, 2023.

CHEC Construction is a subsidiary of China Communications and Construction Co Ltd.

The Red Line’s infrastructure works covers 12.3km and stretches from Kuching Sentral to Pending in the city.

“Apart from building the at-grade and elevated dedicated lane for the autonomous rapid transit (ART), the contract is also for road widening works as well as other infrastructure works.

“The JV company is expected to commence work next month and is scheduled to complete by December 2026,” said Sarawak Metro.

Sarawak Metro is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sarawak Economic Development Corp, which is tasked by the Sarawak government to develop, operate and maintain KUTS.

The project, estimated to cost some RM6bil, is being developed with Phase 1 consisting the Blue Line, Red Line and Green Line.

The Blue Line covers a distance of 27.6km from Rembus in Kota Samarahan to Hikmah Exchange in Kuching City while the Green Line (30km) connects Pending and Damai in the Santubong peninsula, a popular tourist spot.

Ibraco Bhd unit, Ibraco Construction Sdn Bhd, and its JV partners China Railway Engineering Corp (M) Sdn Bhd and Nanyang Tunnel Engineering Sdn Bhd won the construction and completion of the infrastructure works for the Blue Line for a contract value of RM568.6mil in November.

The Blue Lane Package 1 is expected to be completed by Dec 31, 2025 (stage one) and June 30,2026 (stage 1A).

Two weeks ago, another JV company formed by IJM Construction Sdn Bhd, Azam Sehasrat Sdn Bhd and Unique Deco Sdn Bhd was awarded a RM260mil contract.

The contract is for the construction and completion of the Rembus ART depot and other associated structures, stabling yard, detention pond, access road as well as civil works.

The JV company is also expected to start work next month for completion by December 2025.

According to Sarawak Metro, the KUTS project is scheduled to begin passenger service in stages, starting from the fourth quarter of 2025, and expected to achieve full service by end of 2027.

The KUTS is implemented to ease the traffic congestion, especially along Kuching-Samarahan highway, and to modernise the state’s public transport system.

The ART vehicles are the backbone of the KUTS and will be supported by feeder buses. Both vehicles will be powered by green hydrogen, in support of Sarawak’s decarbonisation and in line with the state’s agenda to advance the hydrogen economy.

The ART system will have three-car set rolling stock with a maximum capacity of 300 passengers. The normal service operating speed for ART will be 35km per hour, which can reach a maximum design speed up to 70km per hour.

The prototype ART vehicle was recently on a test engineering run here.

The test run was to refine the specification of the ART unit and also for the manufacturer to identify any potential issues before proceeding with the proof-of-concept exercise.

Remember, that is over 70 people. On average (not taking into account how much land each individual had) that's RM334,653.2414285714/person

Nation building projects like these, things are counted in tens, if not hundreds, of millions.

For kpg people still alot. Later can apply jobs at the depot also. No need go far far to work

Another ART station work has started. This one is at the Sarawak Heart Centre

KUCHING (May 4): Works on the Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) station near the Sarawak Heart Centre in Kota Samarahan continued this week with pilot trenching, said Sarawak Metro Sdn Bhd in a Facebook post today.

It explained the activity is being done to identify any underground obstacles before full excavation commences.

As such, it reminded road users along the Kuching-Samarahan Expressway to observe the traffic signage within the construction to ensure safety and smooth traffic flow.

Sarawak Metro, a subsidiary of the Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC), has been entrusted to develop, operate and maintain the Kuching Urban Transportation System (KUTS) project, which is under the purview of the Sarawak Transport Ministry.

The backbone of the KUTS project is the hydrogen-powered ART vehicles, which will be supported by feeder buses.

Yes, in a ideal world a light rail system would be superior. But in some places it is not practical/cost effective to have light rail, so people just end up with nothing.

Between not having anything vs having something, I'd take the latter.

The only reason Penang still going LRT route is because DAP wants enrich it's cronies?? Maybe received lots of political donations ART projects not enough to cover donation cost? Putrajaya n johor already went the cheaper way.

Why not elevated LRT, why must go with ART with speed only up to 70mph. If theyre concerned about cost then normal buses are the more sensible choice coz normal buses can enter all those taman perumahans
*
IKR right if want to songlap why change the lucrative expensive LRT n use ART. If you read the news the state wants to pioneer hydrogen powered public transport. LRT running on hydrogen do not exist. Not that I am aware off. N kuching is big n scattered will be super expensive. It's not densely populated like KL or Penang or SG.

Sarawak already has hydrogen powered electric buses for years. Buses to ART fueling not that much of challenges compared to LRT which requires electrification n not refueling.

Also bus stations do not create satellite towns LRT n ART can. People will build houses, businesses centres near these stations that can handle more travelers per hour. I guess that where the HDC comes in. Sarawak has SG HDB equivalent in HDC. I just feel they are waiting for public transport to be setup before they start building their own affordable HDC flats.

Australia was interested in deploying it, but changed their mind after doing feasibility study. Indon praises this system to high heaven, but keeps on building MRT and LRT instead.  China themselves only deployed it small non-busy city. Can draw your own conclusions.
*
different scenarios. City never cared about renewal energy. Is the small town using hydrogen powered ART? Sarawak is the world's first. Does Australia have plenty of resources for hydrogen production? We will enjoy the ride first while they world n yourself watch n pray we fail. By the time you changed your mind, n tired of RNR, we would have zero carbon green energy public transport running in every major cities in the state just like how we started the international secondary schools while you all still bitching about sjk n usage of BM. Where we can, We in Sarawak prefer to lead not just puas hati to become followers.
