The Premier (not the tissue brand) has announced that the hydrogen powered Kuching Urban Transportation System (sorry no BM name for this) KUTS prototype tram (long buses what ever you prefer to call it) is here in Kuching.

Revelation should be as soon as tomorrow, hopefully it will look like the artist illustration below. I saw the pics of the China test runs but die die also couldnt find it

QUOTE
The state’s ART system comes under Sarawak Metro, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC).

The prototype will undergo a two-month engineering run at The Isthmus in September and October before beginning its Stage 2 proof of concept (POC) exercise along a short stretch of the Blue Line in Samarahan this November.

QUOTE
“It has been upgraded through intelligent design, which is in line with the needs of Malaysia in achieving a zero-emission and intelligent public transport system,” the company said in a Xinhua report last month.

The smart tram can travel up to 245km in a single charge of hydrogen.

QUOTE
“With this ART, it will change our lives. This transportation will focus on our students in Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) and Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) in Samarahan first.

“The students will use the ART, and the payment is through Sarawak Pay, which will give discounts or special fares for our students,” he said.
QUOTE
Abang Johari later told reporters that the smart tram would first be test-run at the Kuching Isthmus, followed by testing it along the Kuching-Samarahan route.

Either it is through our new lane or on the road itself, if its own lane is not ready yet. We will try it first and manage the traffic flow,” he said.

Update - March 9, 2025

The Sarawak government is still aiming at starting the first phase operation of ART Kuching in 2026. At the same time, this will fully hydrogenized Kuching's Public Transport. the ART feeder buses are also hydrogen buses.

take note that the trial for the ART was completed last year and final specs of the ART trains submitted to Manufacturer. The rolling stock trains are the newer/upgraded version of the Trial ART train bearing the Swak government logo in the earlier post. The ART vehicles/trains will also be equipped with dedicated areas for luggage, wheelchairs, and foldable bicycles, enhancing their user-friendliness.

For transparency, there were few articles citing the transport minister that the first two trains would arrive end of last year but that did not happen. Good to hear that they are still confident to start the operation in 2026. The actual aim is to complete the full lines in time for the SEA Games in 2027. Take note the trains connect to Multiple tourist attractions running all the way to Damai/Santubong/Cultural village area. It also being planned to connect the planned deep sea port and the new Kuching state of the art Airport within close proximity of the new deep sea port (that can allow the docking of cruise ships)

personal note - I still think they need to connect the new airport with the current Kuching Internation Airport with a speedy 20-30 train ride). a >1hr ART ride stopping at multiple stations will not cut it.

Kuching’s public transport to be fully hydrogen-powered by 2026, says Abg Jo
QUOTE
KUCHING (Feb 25): Public transportation in Kuching will be fully powered by hydrogen through the Kuching Urban Transportation System (KUTS) initiative by next year, said Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

He said this is featured in the hydrogen buses and upcoming autonomous rail transit (ART) and is done to encourage and promote domestic offtake of clean hydrogen.

“Forging ahead, Sarawak is actively exploring Power-to-X projects and leveraging our abundant renewable energy resources to generate clean hydrogen.

“By combining hydrogen with carbon dioxide, we can produce a range of synthetic fuels and chemicals, including green methanol, sustainable aviation fuel, green ammonia and even polyesters.

“These polyesters can be processed into various forms such as green fibres, bottles or films — contributing to a more sustainable future,” he said when officiating the EIC Connect Energy Borneo 2025 at the Hikmah Exchange Convention Centre here today.

yeah, look at China. They built a whole subway system underground in the middle of nowhere, and a whole new city developed within few years because the transportation system was already ready underground.

but i still have doubts on ART on the road if it does not run underground or proper train tracks above the ground

A regular tram route is generally not separated from vehicular traffic, other than where there really is sufficient space to do so
