Anyone tested speed/coverage difference between phone and router they provide?

I just went umobile times square this morning, say no 7 day change of mind period. If bad line at home means have to suck it up for 24 months contract. Other telcos also have this 7 day period.
*
buy a prepaid sim card at 7-11....load RM10 into it
buy the weekly plan and test it extensively to every place that u usually go and usuall would need to utilize the internet and see how the line goes

their coverage map on their website might not be 100% accurate and some area like mine 4G is almost unusable

speed wise, it really depends on what kind of chipset you have on your phone
my phone is using a snapdragon 778+ 5G and it's pulling strong signal and speed than the router...some here is terbalik

I did for my ZTE MC8020. Just link ASUS as main wireless router while switching off 2.4GHz/5GHz radio on the ZTE. Of course since the 5G modem gets hot (not like super hot lah), just put cheap USB fan too cool it down lorh. I set the modem to reboot on daily basis.

But ya, Double-NAT'ng... cant be helped. Atleast solutions like Tailscale and Zerotier are there, also VPN included.

mine only gets warm...don't think it's gonna be hot because there are ventilations on both side

QUOTE(waikit1985 @ Mar 25 2024, 09:54 AM)
Few years ago I tried U-mobile postpaid on my phone, the 4G signal is quite terrible at my area (Hulu Langat).

Not sure how's it now because I am planning to get this U Home 5G for my parents to use it at home since they don't have Unifi and the Unifi port at my area also quite full from time to time.

Maybe I should get the starter pack sim card and buy 1 week plan to test it out.

I got a 4G modem at home, bought it couple of years ago, those modem that unlocked can use all types of sim card and bypassing the data quota one... not sure if I can use that to test this U home 5G or not... for sure cannot get 5G signal since it's a 4G modem by the way. will also test it on my iPhone to check signal strength.

Anyone could give me some advice or how to properly test it? Thanks in advance.
*
buy a sim frm 7-11, load some money and buy the weekly plan to test the signal strength and speed at that location
umobile's 4G and 5G is like night and day difference
for me at least at where i'm staying right now, the key is to lock it at 5G because the 4G is unusable(but usable when i'm elsewhere)

just use your phone that has 5G to test...thn if it's ok, just take up the plan that has router included or buy the sim only and buy the router somewhere else

I just bought a u-mobile prepaid sim (RM10). Will load some money into it and buy the weekly plan.
Will test it with my iPhone 12 Pro via Cellmapper and see if I can get B28 most of the time.
I checked u-mobile coverage website, my parents house is at the edge of 5G but within the coverage, while 4G is fully covered. Hope both 4G and 5G there are usable. Of course if can get B28 most or all the time then will be great.

Will test it first, thanks Mr alien and cyktai  notworthy.gif  notworthy.gif

just do speed test instead of u can get certain signal or not
just keep going everywhere and go to fast.com...no need for it to perform the full test
just let it run few second thn pause it so it doesn't eat that much of your data

thn watch how many bars of 5G and/or 4G are u getting as well....4G 4G+ full bar also doesn't mean it's usable
my place 4G 4G+ is full signal but nothing loads

oh ya they locked for u already actually.

if u go to advanced settings - others section - u can go developer options - enter password - network debug.
this zte lose to Zyxel NR5103e.

Speed is about the same, but zte lose latency. Zte latency is about 17-19, Zyxel latency is about 14-17
*
originally it's locked in 5G/4G when it's set in auto
the router occasionally will drop back to 4G thn went back to 5G

QUOTE(waikit1985 @ Mar 25 2024, 05:11 PM)
Using Honor 90 lite to perform the testing now.

Phone showing 4G+ (ald turn on 5g) Cellmapper showing band 1,3,7,8 most of the time with RSRP -100 ish.
Occasionally showing band 28 with RSRP around -80 ish.

But I’m still on the given free data 1GB la. Haven’t buy the weekly plan yet.
*
buy the plan...your free data isn't 5G eventhough it said "5G ready data"
ya....it took me some days to find out that myself...people thought my line has problem
the problem is u have to buy plan to activate 5G else it's stuck at 4G

*

those that subscribed the plan with ZTE MC888S included and if you experienced the router being hot and say the router is performing
the answer is no...it's hot because of the 3 LED in front...turn it off and your whole router will be much cooler

I just stream nowadays
But the last time I torrent...it can reach full speed but this depends on many factors

The thing is I seldom torrent.  Maybe once in a few months for a file or 2...
But the problem with this umobile is it's ZERO connections. If it's like throttled speed I still can accept. But it's totally zero. Sigh...

Is there any browser type of torrent client or plug in ? Opera browser itselt contains free VPN so we can do it.
*
instead of trying or subscribing to VPN that's still 1 of the factor that can affect the speed
i suggest anybody that wants a complete solution directly subscribe to something call seedbox and take advantage of the insane whatever download speed you have

You can try using Cloudflare WARP. The free one should be enough. https://1.1.1.1/
*
free VPN aren't recommended to be used for torrenting
1. you're using their server speed...in short, you're sharing it with everybody else
2. their warp server is located at SG which banned torrenting so whoever use it better becareful
3. these free VPN are to bypass restriction only

QUOTE(ultrageek @ Apr 10 2024, 07:40 PM)
Hi,
The below are my observations in comparison between the ZTE MC888s (just started my contract) and Deco X50 5G (which i pinjam from my office to test).

Using the supplied ZTE MC888s, when I had first used it, it was pulling a paltry 50 to 100Mbps. I then took out that sim card, and with default settings on the Deco (I didn't change any its settings and no, my office staff isn't smart enough to change the network settings... they prefer everything default!), it was consistently getting 500 to 600Mbps!

Coming here, and reading this thread, I modified as per the information provided (aka 5G NSA, Band 78, Band 28 for 4G), and the values went up to 250Mbps but still no match for the Deco.

FYI, the tests were done one after another device, and to the same servers on SpeedTest (KL - ViewQwest).

Any ideas what else can be done to bring the numbers closer to the Deco? I know the Deco has way superior modem, but at half it's download value for the ZTE?

Thanks for the comments...
*
the speed difference is due to the chipset it's using....deco X50 is using Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X62 while ZTE isn't
no need different router, i switch the sim to my phone which runs on snapdragon chip also can go that fast and it's full bar too
thn switch back to this router, it's pulling 3 bars and not so fast speed but way more than enough

yes, u need to buy a package for 5G to be activated
if u just use it as it is...it's 4G only

the "5G ready data" is not what you think/what it meant

While I don't face your random and frequent DC's , I too am facing some daily or every alternate day DC's. No firmware to update according to the portal.

I will see the following error on the display logs (Advance Settings > Others):
Apr 13 12:51:26  : [user][info]Rndis(1657): OnConnectFail, rndis_check_connect_state_count=0

Annoying... not sure whether it helps anyone else

Mine DC this morning. Notice DC usually in the morning. Wait for awhile to see if it recover by itself but nope.

My SSID still up n the physical modem show green colour for the signal. So I logged in to modem and changed my 5G NSA to 4G and click apply. Then changed back to 5G NSA back and apply again. Then everything works fine.

I can just restart the device but just wanna quick fix. Modem booting is slow. If this happening frequently and if I got the timing right in the morning, I might schedule the modem to restart daily.

3 bar. but bar doesn't mean anything to me. It's the signal strength dBm that I am are looking for. The sinr and stuff

I played a lot with it during this Raya. Went from my home in cheras, to my hometown in Ipoh then back  to wife hometown in tangkak
*
thn i think i know what your DC reasons is
try monitor how many bars are you getting, if it's a constant strong 3 bar, doesn't make sense
if it drops to 2 bars, thn that might be the reason it went to 4G

if u don't wanna move your router, i suggest try to flip the router upside down...trial and error

mine at first sim card slot is facing down, now it's facing up

Yeah played a lot with placement. My tower is around 100metres away but my signal not that good. I guess other houses n buildings blocking the way. Anyway I'm happy with average 300mbps. Terminated my unifi already
*
for our 5G, it's never about how far away it is
it's about how many walls it has to go through...the more walls/obstacle, the more reduced the speed is

i'm getting 3 bars, around 300Mbps too....with my qualcomm chip phone, i get full bar and easily double that speed
