Yes, the answer is no....

I don't even have a degree when I started working in Singapore.... I remember my starting pay was just $1300 as a PC technician.

After that go study part-time, gotten my IT degree only at 36yo..... Then after that go study masters in business management. Completed it at 42yo... Now, 44yo. Next year, going for study phd.... its jsut for personal goal. No doubt I am slower than many pple and even many many singaporeans/malaysians, by my salary is still pretty decent for my age, after including bonus, I get around $7800 a month. Now assistant maanger managing IT-dept in my company.

I saw a thread about parents sending kids oversea to study blah blah...Do you really need it? NOPE..... IF you intend to let your kids work in SG, then degree is not necessary. Can start working first. Then study part-time later. The best thing is that you can even get company to sponsor your studies (I didn't).

My colleague (Malaysian Work-permit), is doing his diploma at SIM now. ITs fully sponsor by my company. Just that he will be bonded for 6-months (meaning cannot quit within 6-months after completing studies). So, if you are good, there are many companies who are willing to sponsor your studies and groom you. Even help you apply for PR (if you wish to stay in SG for long term).

So, don't need to worry at all......

Up to you whether you want to bleive or not... Plenty of examples here.... You can go ask around how many malaysians work and study in Singapore, then eventually gotten citizenship. Way too many to count.

Btw, its not just malaysians. OTher coutnries too. Back then when I was studying, there are pple from philippines, India and Myanmar. During my masters, there are a few ang mohs too.... Company send them to study and its fully sponsored.

There are many ways to get to the top of the mountain. Can't say that your way is the best. I have taken professional exams whilst working and i can say, studying while working is really tough. Second, a degree is now entry requirement into the workforce.

you have good attitude.

for me, the moral of the story is to work hard, persevere, don't give up.

parents spend money to give their kids a good education is a good thing. parents cannot afford to give kids a good education, doesn't mean it's an excuse one can give for not being successful.

Unker your time was like what 20 years ago???
That time diploma also consider good
Time moves on
10 years ago Degree is already consider basic entry
Of course there always exception of few very oustanding individuals without degree also can be billionaire
But for Average Joe Jane, degree is nowadays minimum ticket entry to executive level job
As for career ladder, even MBA is now required by most MNC for new senior manager above

To reply your topic, of course you don't need degree to work. E-hailing and food delivery don't even need degree.

But having a degree cert will increase your chances of working with top companies and possibly higher starting pay; ultimately depends on your soft and interpersonal skills.
For example, my brother starting pay in SG already close to $4k.

To your question TS no then and no now

However you come from a time where there was no proliferation of degree holders and lack of high paying jobs. Competition is tougher now , yes skills are important so if you can't cut it with a degree opt for TVET. But if you can then you should try to enrol in one and excel in it

Means u need to do something out of ordinary
Like make calls to the hiring staff.. buy coffee etc .
Try and sell urself. Of course it's not 100% . But that's the only way to get past bot filter
*
SME maybe got chance la with call and "bribe" to hiring staff

MNC if want to do exception; you need strong justification to entire management with shine technical achievements from applicants [like you holding patents that generate $$$$]

usually hiring staff and management wont do that as this will attract additional unwanted noise.

LOL

You need education (which conveniently can say a degree or the least a cert) to progress in your career.

Yourself sendiri pergi belajar, parttime degree and Masters..

if you wanna make example of no need degree in order to work, heck everyone knows that.. just go work at McD right after SPM, tadaaa...you got work with SPM cert..

Yep so if got no paper need to prove with portfolio and experience , and need to sell by talking to people... Can't rely on automated job application.

Ytd I watch a video on YouTube about how a guy became a plastic surgeon, his grades were not as good as others and he couldn't get get into uni to be doctor. So he resorted to calling admissions office finally got one girl agreed to help to talk to her superior and got him an interview. He said sometimes u just gotta try since you got nothing to lose.of course maybe nowadays more difficult because company might say just send in Ur application online .... In the past u send in hardcopy and people had to filter it manually so might be easier ... People will definitely have some bias . Computer doesn't .. u write a personal statement for people to read some sob story like this is my dream since young blablabla people might take that into account. Computer say fk it no degree filter algorithm kikc u out

fuh.. thanks captain obvious. if you have not "corrected" that.. it would be a more fun to discuss. now it is just pure useless statement. tons of people working (low pay jobs) even before they go to uni or in between middle school and uni period. simply ask any SPM student, no one will say can't find low paying job without a degree..

Yes, the answer is no....

I don't even have a degree when I started working in Australia.... I remember my starting pay was just $1300 as a busboy.

After that go study part-time, gotten my Culinary Arts degree only at 36yo..... Then after that go study masters in food science with business management. Completed it at 42yo... Now, 44yo. Next year, going for study phd.... its jsut for personal goal. No doubt I am slower than many pple and even many many australians/malaysians, by my salary is still pretty decent for my age, after including bonus, I get around $88,800 a month. Now executive sous-chef in my firm

I saw a thread about parents sending kids oversea to study blah blah...Do you really need it? NOPE..... IF you intend to let your kids work in Oz, then degree is not necessary. Can start working first. Then study part-time later. The best thing is that you can even get company to sponsor your studies (I didn't).

So, don't need to worry at all......

So, don't need to worry at all......

wait... this story is your life story rite?

but did you notice the inconsistency and flaw of your answer of "no" to the question of need a degree to work.

Obviously the answer is no, because there are all sorts of jobs/work.

the real question is which will provide a better chance in getting a decent job. The answer is YES.... and you yourself is proof of it. You went to get a few degrees somemore, although at a much older age.

not to discredit you, your story is really a non story lol. can be copy pasta the whole thing but replace the starting job with other low tier blue collar job.

You don’t need one in order to just work.
But for many, the desired starting job will require a degree.

I know quite a few people in manufacturing who didn’t have a degree. Perhaps a diploma from a polytechnic.
And then they work towards a part time degree.

Definitely not fun. I’d say doing a part time master is less stressful than a part time degree.

Maybe in countries like US or UK where things are more progressive but for a traditional country like Malaysia, for sure still a need.
