Rumizu is right, the urine of the males is slightly stronger smelling, but i can tell you from smelling both everyday theres hardly any difference laugh.gif

Both male and female hedgehogs should have no noticable smell, they are not rodents and do not have scent glands.
a strong smell is often a sign of illness or a need for a bath.
Just like how male cats have no smell, the same as female cats.

QUOTE(bonai @ May 13 2008, 12:37 PM)
why is it needed to be compared with male humans????
*
Don't forget, you are the one that brought humans up sweat.gif

QUOTE
girls also same what, just that they dont leave any stain or evidence.. tongue.gif

Exactly, its the stains and evidence that makes the comparison so poignant. It could be that female hedgehogs do it, but since they don't leave a mess for you to clean theres nothing to worry about whistling.gif

Tunnel is a vinyl dryer duct tube, bought from a hardware store.
all holes were melted/cut out with a soldering iron, then filed with a metal file (the kind used for wood) then sandpapered till smooth. You can also saw it, but just be careful not to apply too much pressure or it will crack.

All parts can be fully dismantled for cleaning

I should probably add that the tunnel is not a good idea if your hedgie does not like to come out of hiding, your hands can only fit in if they are small. Luckily Angel its very curious and comes out by herself and Demon will always come out if i show him his igloo..hes really obsessed with his igloo...if no igloo he totally will not come out till i leave the room laugh.gif

Hi weiwei89

Hedgehogs are solitary and territorial, they will fight when put together, and the wounds can be fatal.

If you keep 2 males they will probably fight to the death for the territory
If you keep 2 females they will be highly stressed and could fight and kill each other.
If you keep a male and a female they will mate, kill and eat the babies, then fight each other for the territory.

So if you buy a pair, you have to have
2 separate cages
2 water bowls
2 food bowls
2 wheels that you will need to wash every single day, no joke.
And you will have to bond with them separately.
play with them separately.
bathe them separately.

Please do go read the first page of this thread and do more research about hedgehogs, They are an exotic pet that have a lot of special needs and requirements.

They are not expensive to maintain, but the equipment and medical treatment they will need can be. Also you will have to travel far and possibly pay more for vet care since not every vet can treat hedgehogs.

oh and btw

2) Advertising of Pet sales or wanting to purchase/adopt a pet is prohibited. Do it in the Garage Sales instead.

Have fun doing your research because there is a LOT to learn
Best of luck to you.

I can picture him doing it laugh.gif so cute Ken
Hmm maybe try to make new toys for him to play?
They can be fascinated by simple things like small cardboard boxes, Or roll up a piece of paper into a tunnel for him to run in.
Or even cloth for him to snuggle and dig around in

Dont leave them in the cage for him, only let him use them when you are there with him.
That way, if he likes to toys he might begin to show more interest in spending time with you ( its like rasuah hahaha!)

No need to buy expensive fancy toys nod.gif just check the toys you choose to be sure they are clean and safe.

Added on May 14, 2008, 2:27 amI finally finished making a bucket wheel for Angel this week. Here are some pics.

Front view

Side view.
The back pole is intentionally slanted to balance out the slant of the bucket itself.
This is so the running surface is at 180%.

Everything in white hehe

The wheel is really good, beats anything you can buy in stores.
The smooth surface is really easy to clean and most of the time the poo and pee slides off as she runs.
When it spins its more smooth and silent than the silent spinner due to the fact its using a roller blade wheel with a bearing in it.
If you have a saw and drill at home (and you are reasonably good at DIY) you should really try making one!

I cant wait to replace demons silent spinner with one of these, I already bought the same bucket in pearl baby blue to match his liners laugh.gif

scratching should be common, provided that they don't do that excessively (which means mites somewhere). mine scratches itself once in a while too, even us humans scratch ourselves right? wink.gif

cool DIY wheel cim, but won't the bucket surface be too slippery for your hedgehog? later if it runs at top speed and slips, straightaway flings itself across the room, lol...

Scratching sometimes is normal, just like how we humans get itchy sometimes, but if you notice scratching everyday then it could be mites, dry skin or possibly even a fungal infection.
What does the skin between the quills look like?

The design of this wheel had been around for many years , people have always used smooth surfaced buckets or cake covers.
Maybe mine looks slippery because the plastic is a pearly color?
Angel willingly runs when people are around so i get to observe her using it, she seems to go faster on this wheel lol. Maybe the bearing is smoother.

They do not need any surface grip because they run on the pads of their feet, not their nails.
Just like a barefoot human, would you be more comfortable running on a smooth floor or a bumpy pebbled floor? laugh.gif

In fact the raised bumps / textured surface of wheels like silent spinners and comfort wheels have been thought to potentially cause bruising.
(but i don't how true that is)
A rubbery surface will harbor bacteria after time since it will constantly be pooped and peed on.
Mesh surfaces are unsafe due to nails/toes getting caught.
Rough sandpaper like surfaces will injure the pads of their feet.
