hey Cim,
is there any other explanation for scratching besides mites ?
cz i've checked but no mites...
could it b sum kind of bad habit or sumthing ?
Scratching sometimes is normal, just like how we humans get itchy sometimes, but if you notice scratching everyday then it could be mites, dry skin or possibly even a fungal infection.
What does the skin between the quills look like?

scratching should be common, provided that they don't do that excessively (which means mites somewhere). mine scratches itself once in a while too, even us humans scratch ourselves right?

cool DIY wheel cim, but won't the bucket surface be too slippery for your hedgehog? later if it runs at top speed and slips, straightaway flings itself across the room, lol...
The design of this wheel had been around for many years , people have always used smooth surfaced buckets or cake covers.
Maybe mine looks slippery because the plastic is a pearly color?
Angel willingly runs when people are around so i get to observe her using it, she seems to go faster on this wheel lol. Maybe the bearing is smoother.
They do not need any surface grip because they run on the pads of their feet, not their nails.
Just like a barefoot human, would you be more comfortable running on a smooth floor or a bumpy pebbled floor?
In fact the raised bumps / textured surface of wheels like silent spinners and comfort wheels have been thought to potentially cause bruising.
(but i don't how true that is)
A rubbery surface will harbor bacteria after time since it will constantly be pooped and peed on.
Mesh surfaces are unsafe due to nails/toes getting caught.
Rough sandpaper like surfaces will injure the pads of their feet.
