Hi guys, I want to buy one for my bf but there's so many choices I'm a little overwhelmed. What I seek:
- Budget 500, can go higher if ticks all my boxes
- smooth shave if possible
- wet/dry use
- convenient to use (cordless, decent battery etc.)
- durable (3+ years would be nice!)

Note: he still uses good ol' manual shaver, and I read that it takes time to get used to and there's difference in the usage/technique... Please share your experiences if any!

Some of these brands came up in my search... Any specific model to recommend?
- Braun
- Philips
- Panasonic
- Xiaomi

Thanks in advance wub.gif

Better ask him if he needs one or else will be a waste. I bought one but hardly use it. Still stick to manual shaver.

Hmm why did you revert back to manual one? I thought it'd be a nice upgrade.. to shave cleaner, faster.

go for Panasonic, been with mine for over a decade and it still runs perfectly ... just clean it frequently and try not to overcharge to sustain the battery life. Thing about these electronic shaver their chargers aren't your usual typeC, lightning phone cables and they're not sold separately. So if you lose your charger, that's it. My previous Braun unfortunately parted ways with me because the charger was mauled by my exgf's pussy.

nothing worthy to mention, I still occasionally use a blade instead of the shaver when I have the time/special occasion.

... we're talking about shaving the facial part right? I do have a thread about balls shaving too if you're interested:

the shopee thingy is a trimer, not a shaver... unless he also like to shave his head.

electric shaver can use with cream, its the basic dry one.

wet ones can use with water, shaving cream, etc...

10 years?! That's very promising to hear.. what's your model? I can probably look up a more recent lineup for more features.
I'm just looking for facial shave for now... But thanks for sharing extra info I guess sweat.gif

P.S. Very unfortunate news about your Braun... Hope you didn't punish the pussy lol

Vote for manual shaver (Blade type).
I've seen those video review, electric shaver is not easy to use also have to shave few times at the same side to get cleaner, while I use manual one easy to use can clean the facial hair within 1 minute with facial wash lol

I have used Trimmer, Shaver and Double Edge Safety Razor (or DE razor).

Both Trimmer (below RM100) and Shaver (RM200+) are under Philips. DE you can explore this new shop called CHARMWISE.

Here's my comment and rank from the cleanest.

1) DE Razor: DE Razor definitely shaves the smoothest. There are lot of things to explore from the razor, to shaving soap, post-shaving cream etc. So the journey is more interesting than electric trimmer or shaver. DE might take longer time initially until you get used to it. Can do dry/wet.

Smoothness: 1st
Time taken: 2nd
Control: 2nd

2) Trimmer: If I need to shave fast, this is my go to. Although not as smooth as DE Razor, I think it's definitely smoother than shaver since shaver can miss a spot. I bought mine for a sub RM100 and only use this for dry shave without cream. Unlike DE razor where you definitely need shaving cream/soap to prevent from nicking, Trimmer can have better control in styling because your mustache/beard is not covered by soap/cream.

Smoothness: 2nd
Time taken: 1st
Control: 1st

3) Shaver: I bought 2 shavers - one the cheaper option and the other one more expensive, thinking it will do a better job than the cheaper one. BUT I WAS WRONG. Both are equally bad. It's hard to shave and sometimes you miss a spot so it takes more time to complete the shave. Due to it's design, it's impossible to get the smoothest using shaver. (Disclaimer: I am not sure how other brand of shaver would do)

Smoothness: 3rd
Time taken: 3rd
Control: 3rd

Faster, maybe. But definitely not cleaner

Using a Philips shaver cant remember what model, pretty good. Dry and wet.

Cons -
Need constant cleaning aka rinse or the stub will fall off.
The trimmer is not as good as the previous model.

Pro -
Longer lasting battery life.
Shaving head is much more flexible, easy to reach under the jaw line kind of place.

If its not for the speed and convenient, I'll stick with the trad non electrical 3 blade shaver.

Most likely for a cleaner, closer shave. Electric shaver will never shave as close as a manual razor because the electric shaver razors aren't directly in contact with the skin.

When switching to electric shaver, skin irritation occurs initially due to skin not used to it. It takes some time to get used to and some might not wanna put up with that.

Been using Philips PT764 since switched to electric 4 years ago. Mostly sticking to it for speed and convenience.

i personally use both..

electric shaver gives a quick fix but not a very clean smooth shave. it takes awhile to get used to transition from manual to electric.

if i really need a clean smooth shave i will shave with electric first then finish off with manual

i'm using Philips 1000 series shaver, bought during promo. manual using Gillette mach 3 normal/turbo..

I got a Philips and Panasonic one, cant recall what but after a while just rely on gillette blue 3 disposable. I got Fusion also but expensive refills.

Philips warranty is stupendously good

they don't even want you to send your product back (well no one's going to touch it anyway), they just mail you a new replacement immediately laugh.gif

check the price of the replacement blades and see if that will work

electric shavers/trimmers always have a net/frame between the cutting blade and the facial hair, so they don't do a smooth shave, but they're safe. A used/worn blade will make a lot of noise whacking the facial hair, before actually making them short enough. They're not really cutting the hair, just whacking and fraying the tips until they break. In the long run, not good for the hair and skin as well.

I'm surprised to see such a difference under microscopic view 😱
Thanks for the insight.. I'm curious to know how it feels to touch though...? If "fraying the tips until they break" means the hair is less prickly to touch then that's actually better imo lol. How is it bad for the skin exactly? Does ingrown hair happen more often or something?

Once the stubble has grown, the feeling to the touch is the same
For me, using electric shaver caused more breakout since I have to press it a little bit harder to the skin to get a more smooth shave
There is also the itchiness after the shave as well
Never got any ingrown hair before because of it

after a shave be it razor or trimmer or electric, the prickly is less for half a day or so, during which the hair 'recovers' from the 'injury' by wicking away skin moisture and either becomes thicker at the edges or break off a bit more to come to shape. later on it becomes prickly. different person hair also different, you may monitor his hair and make own assessment.

in grown hair is more likely with razor close shave, also depends on skin condition and hair type of the person

in short, if grooming matters a lot like want to look consistently shaven every day, then an electric is a must have, and the skin may need getting used to. maintenance is a bit higher, because those things need tedious cleaning (taking apart and rinse and dry, some also need oiling like trimmers), or replaced (higher cost, blades, batteries etc)

if unfortunately kena allergy to the shaver, then maybe nickel allergy from the stainless steel part, or something like that.

haha, Mach3 da best.

It gets greasy inside, too, with our sebum and what not.
Some parts are fragile, and often mistakes can be expensive.

Electrical shavers are like printers, they really sell the replacement blades and shaving foam.

there is no ingrown hair when using electric shaver.
after using it for few weeks, i think electric shaver is less efficient when compared to manual razor.

electric shaver take more time to shave. u have to round back to shave the same place to get the same feel as using manual razor.
its like 3 minute with electric shaver, manual just 1 minute and done.

but it does eliminate the need to keep on changing razors every week or days.
btw, electric shaver have better feel, eg less prickly feel.

Electric shaver almost always have this net thing, so for the facial hair to get trimmed, it has to go through the holes first. It's like letting the shaver blades play whack a mole from inside the net. That's why always can miss a hair or two, not a clean shave unless being thoroughly repeated. Trimmer is the next best thing after manual blades.

Philips don't do repair for out of warranty shavers though. At least for my unit 1000 series where issues surfaced after 3.5 years.

Manual wise. Gillette Mach 3 nice. Shave2u also nice, but closing down at year end if i am not mistaken.

Anyone know if Braun provide service to their electric shavers though?

Hi guys, I want to buy one for my bf but there's so many choices I'm a little overwhelmed. What I seek:
- Budget 500, can go higher if ticks all my boxes
- smooth shave if possible
- wet/dry use
- convenient to use (cordless, decent battery etc.)
- durable (3+ years would be nice!)

Note: he still uses good ol' manual shaver, and I read that it takes time to get used to and there's difference in the usage/technique... Please share your experiences if any!

Some of these brands came up in my search... Any specific model to recommend?
- Braun
- Philips
- Panasonic
- Xiaomi

Thanks in advance  wub.gif

you boyfriend like clean shave or got after shadow?

if shadow and his beard etc not very thick, I suggest get a philips trimmer < 300. clean shave requires a lot of preparation to prevent acne.

From my experience , avoid Xiaomi. I'm happy user of a basic WAHL.

Eeeeeh sad.gif What's taking up the space?

I saw fancy ones like Braun has something called a self cleaning port/station? Is that it?

Judging from many responses so far... I guess I'll lower my budget and start smaller, at least won't feel that bad if it ends up not suitable sweat.gif

Have a basic electric shaver. You may miss out some part of the hair and need return to shave. Putting pressure in effort for a closer shave actually equal to scratching the skin so it's not that great. Work best for those who constantly on the run.

My preference is manual shave. Simple, efficient and not time consuming. Want to try straight razor and still learning from YouTube.
