The iPhone 14 Plus is the ugly duckling of Apple’s product line-up, with weak sales that suggest consumers aren’t that interested in a larger version of the standard iPhone 14. But with the iPhone 15 lineup on the way, and the impending launch of the iPhone 15 Plus, it may be time to give Apple’s plus-sized iPhone a try.
user posted image
The iPhone 15 Plus hasn’t been getting a lot of attention from the rumor-mill, perhaps because its predecessor wasn’t as popular as it could have been. Then again, if last year is anything to go by, we’re looking at a phone that just happens to be a larger version of the iPhone 15. But that isn’t necessarily a bad thing, especially with the rumors of a price hike hitting the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max.

Here’s why you should consider the iPhone 15 Plus as your next iPhone.

It's could be way cheaper than the Pro
One of the criticisms faced by the iPhone 14 Plus was the high $899 price tag, especially in light of how unexciting the phone looked on paper. We’re not expecting the iPhone 15 Plus to get a price cut, but we haven’t heard anything about the price rising either. That isn’t true of the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, which are rumored to get a price increase of $100-$200 a piece.
user posted image
We still don’t know whether the iPhone 15’s price will be going up, but rumor is that manufacturing costs could have risen by as much as 12%. If Apple passes all that extra cost onto the consumers, it would mean the iPhone 15 Plus’s price could go up by over $100.

It wouldn’t be ideal if a price hike really does happen, but it would still mean the iPhone 15 Plus is noticeably cheaper than the Pro and the Pro Max models. Assuming a $200 price hike is accurate, an iPhone 15 Pro would cost $1,199, while the Pro Max would cost $1,299. That means you could be saving as much as $300 opting for the iPhone 15 Plus.

A bigger screen than the iPhone 15
We’re not expecting any major changes to the design of the iPhone 15 family, and the size of the phones’ respective displays are included in that. The iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro are expected to have the same 6.1-inch display as their iPhone 14 counterparts, while the iPhone 15 Plus and iPhone 15 Pro max are expected to stick at 6.7 inches.
user posted image
While there are no options for anyone wanting a smaller phone, those of you that prefer a larger display have to choose between the iPhone 15 Plus and the iPhone 15 Pro Max. Given the Pro Max’s high cost, and any potential issues with supply, the iPhone 15 Plus will likely be the best alternative for the full-screen experience.

That said, it's unlikely that the Plus will be getting more premium display features, like the LTPO display — which offers a 120Hz adaptive refresh rate. In fact, we may not see a move from the 60Hz LTPS displays until the launch of the iPhone 17.

All the iPhone 15 upgrades — but with a bigger battery
The only major difference between the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus is size, and from what we’ve heard so far it’ll be the same situation this year. That means the iPhone 15 Plus will get all the same upgrades, including things like USB-C connectivity, the Dynamic Island, the A16 Bionic chipset, and potentially even a 48MP camera lens with a larger sensor — which helps capture more light.
user posted image
Not to mention the fact that the rumours currently claim the iPhone 15 Plus will have a massive 4,912 mAh battery. That’s bigger than all the other three iPhone 15 models, including the iPhone 15 Pro Max. We don’t know how well it will perform yet, but since the iPhone 14 Pro Max has one of the best phone battery lives with a 4,323 mAh battery, the iPhone 15 Plus could give it a run for its money.

You will miss out on all the biggest upgrades coming to the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max. So you might have to sacrifice a titanium frame, action button, 3nm A17 Bionic chip and all those other extra hardware flourishes. Being a non-Pro model means you won’t be getting a telephoto camera either. But if you can handle life without all the Pro upgrades, then the iPhone 15 Plus is still shaping up to be a significant upgrade over last year.

There’s less chance of a shortage
Trying to get an iPhone 14 in the weeks and months after launch was a nightmare — especially if you had your heart set on an iPhone 14 Pro or Pro Max. COVID-related production issues meant there was a limited supply of iPhone 14 Pro series phones, and combined with high demand it meant getting hold of one quickly was basically impossible.
user posted image
The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus didn’t have quite the same problem, with significantly lower demand. No doubt due to the sheer lack of upgrades compared to the iPhone 13 that came out the year before. The iPhone 14 Plus was hit hardest by that lack of interest, with reports claiming Apple cut production by 70-90% within two weeks of release. A month later reports claimed Apple had stopped shipping iPhone 14 Plus panels, suggesting the company had more devices than it could reasonably sell.

We’ve already been hearing rumors about potential production issues with the iPhone 15 series — especially where the Pro models are concerned. While Apple anticipates lower demand this year, those reports still anticipate possible shortages.

If last year is anything to go by, there’s a very good chance the iPhone 15 Plus will be minimally affected by this. If only because there’s likely to be much lower demand for the phone. So if a worst case scenario does play out for the iPhone 15 Pro series, the Plus could prove to be a quick way to upgrade.

Everything that makes an iPhone an iPhone
The most important thing to remember about the iPhone 15 Plus is that it is an iPhone. For a lot of people out there, that’s the most important thing of all. That means the phone is guaranteed to come with all the things you can’t get anywhere else. iOS 17, several years of software and security updates, MagSafe, some of the best computational photography software, and accessory support on a scale that would make a Google Pixel insanely jealous.
user posted image
There’s also the topic of the A16 Bionic chipset. It may not be the A17 Bionic, but it’s certainly better than anything Android phones currently have to offer. Combine it with the giant battery that’s been rumored, and you have the potential for some fantastic battery life as well. We’re also likely to see fantastic photo capabilities, especially with the rumored 48MP lens.

So, yes, the iPhone 15 Pro Max might be worth the splurge. But the iPhone 15 Plus could be more than good enough for many shoppers.

Hi, I'm in a dilemma now whether I should buy Iphone 14 pro max or wait for Iphone 15 pro max, based on all the leaks, Iphone 15 pro max does not seem like a big upgrade from 14.
My main concern is the price, now you can get Iphone 14 pro max with RM800 discount from switch website, and seems like Apple will increase the price for 15, if that's the case, the price difference between 14 pro max and 15 pro max might go up to more than RM1k.

Which one should I go for?
BTW, normally when apple announces new generation of Iphones, does the retail price drop even more for the current generation of Iphones (New Units)?

if you concern on USB type-C and new telephoto camera, go for ip15pm.
The selling price may be reduced more, and Apple might discontinue the ip14p and ip14pm to focus on their upcoming type-c model phone.

Type-C maybe a little bit, but camera not at all, cause I don't take photos that much.

And according to this source, iphone 15 changes are just too meh, the big upgrade will be iphone 16 instead.

usually a month later, we usually get around early / mid October based on the past couple of launches. Malaysia has never been the first batch to launch any Apple branded products, but that might change once they open their first retail door here soon.
*
TH ada 2 stores but AFAIK never the first wave/batch. So having a physical Apple Store =/= first wave.
TH is usually late by us 1 week or the same week.
Lion city pulak first wave. Maybe their purchasing power is higher there.
Who knows, maybe things will change starting this year or the next. Anyone working inside knowing anything? Share sikit. tongue.gif

I'm using Oppo, 5 years old phone, I've decided that it's time to get a new phone, and it's either samsung galaxy fold or Iphone and I choose the latter cause I am bit bored of Android.
BTW, My last Iphone was Iphone 3GS LOL
If I really settled down for Iphone 14, if Iphone 16 comes out next year and it's really a big upgrade, I will trade in my 14 and get 16.

The Dynamic Island wasn’t the only big change to the screen that Apple made with the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max – the company also gave them an always-on display. As with the Dynamic Island, this was exclusive to the Pro models, but will it remain a Pro-exclusive with the iPhone 15 line?
user posted image
After all, the Dynamic Island – which we were big fans of in our iPhone 14 Pro review and iPhone 14 Pro Max review – is rumored to be trickling down to the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus, so it’s not unrealistic to think the always-on display could as well.

Below then, we’ll look at the rumors to see whether we're likely to get an iPhone 15 always-on display, and which models specifically will and won't have this feature. Before that though, we’ve included an overview of what an always-on display actually is, and what Apple’s take on it is like.

What is an always-on display?
An always-on display is much like what it sounds – a screen that’s never (or rarely) actually off. In practice, what that means is that when you press the power button to turn the screen off (or it turns off on its own through inactivity), it will still display some information, rather than going totally black and blank.
user posted image
This could include things like the time, the date, and notifications. It’s a feature that Android phones have had for a while, but it only arrived on iPhones with the iPhone 14 Pro line.

Different phones handle it a bit differently, with most Android phones displaying the screen in black and white when the always-on display kicks in. This is likely both to conserve battery and make it not look like you’ve simply left the screen fully on. However, Apple’s approach involves color, albeit more muted shades than when you wake the phone up.

With Apple’s always-on display, you can optionally show the lock screen wallpaper and notifications, or you can disable one or both of those options. With both disabled, the always-on display will just show the time and any other widgets you’ve set up on your lock screen, against a black background.

Things like timers will also be shown, but you won’t see the seconds count down, you’ll just see the nearest minute.

Whether looking at Apple’s take or Android’s, a key aspect of an always-on display is a low refresh rate, so that the battery doesn’t drain as much as with the screen on.

In the case of the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, the refresh rate drops all the way to 1Hz. That’s down from a maximum of 120Hz, when you’re actively using the phone, and it means there’s minimal pull on the battery – though there’s still some, so if you prioritize battery life above all else, you might want to disable the always-on display.

Will the iPhone 15 have an always-on display?
As noted above, Apple drops the refresh rate to 1Hz with the always-on display, and for that reason it’s looking unlikely that we'll get an iPhone 15 always-on display, because a leak suggests the iPhone 15 will stick with a 60Hz screen – one that can’t deviate from that refresh rate.
user posted image
Slightly more recently, display expert Ross Young claimed on X (formerly known as Twitter) that the standard iPhone 15 will be stuck with an LTPS (Low-Temperature Polycrystalline Silicon) display, like last year. While no specific mention of an always-on display was made, that essentially rules out the ability to drop to 1Hz, as Apple requires LTPO (Low-Temperature Polycrystalline Oxide) displays for that.

In fact, Young went so far as to say that the standard iPhone models won’t get LTPO screens until the iPhone 17, in 2025.

If these leaks are true, then the iPhone 15 almost certainly won’t have an always-on display, as it would probably drain too much battery.

That said, while no leaks have explicitly suggested the phone will have an always-on display, we haven’t heard anyone specifically say it won’t either, and only a couple of sources have even talked about the refresh rate. So while unlikely, it’s not impossible that the iPhone 15 will have an always-on screen.

What about the iPhone 15 Plus?
The leaks above specifically say that only the Pro models will have the ability to drop to a 1Hz refresh rate, and based on past form, we’d expect the iPhone 15 Plus to use the same screen technology as the standard iPhone 15 anyway.
user posted image
All of which is to say, the iPhone 15 Plus probably won’t have an always-on display, and if the iPhone 15 doesn’t (as has been rumored) then again, the Plus almost certainly won’t either.

As with the iPhone 15, we can’t completely rule out this feature, but it’s looking unlikely, and with Apple rumored to be bringing the Dynamic Island and a 48MP camera to the standard and Plus models, it makes sense that it would hold some other features back, to ensure the Pro models still stand out above the standard and Plus phones.

Will the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max still have an always-on display?
Apple doesn’t often remove features from its phones, and with the always-on display feature only having been introduced last year, it’s very unlikely the company would ditch this for the iPhone 15 Pro and the iPhone 15 Pro Max. So while we probably won't see an iPhone 15 Plus or iPhone 15 always-on display, the Pro models will almost certainly include an always-on display again.
user posted image
There’s further evidence for this in iOS 17, which includes a new StandBy feature designed to improve the always-on display.

With StandBy, you can essentially turn your iPhone into a smart display when it’s charging. In this mode it can display a lot more things than the standard always-on display (since battery drain is much less of a concern), and it doesn’t mute colors either.

It’s unlikely that Apple would keep building on the always-on display idea if the feature wasn’t going to be supported by future phones, so we’d be shocked if the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max didn’t include it.

We may well see other upgrades beyond StandBy as well, but that remains to be seen. Regardless, we’d guess these would be software changes – meaning that as with StandBy, they’ll probably also come to the iPhone 14 Pro and the iPhone 14 Pro Max.

One of the biggest changes rumored to be coming to the iPhone 15 is the USB-C connector. After spending its 16 years of existence using some kind of proprietary charging cable, Apple is finally adopting the same standardized connector as everyone else — even if it may not entirely be Apple’s choice to do so.

This is a big deal. Partly because it means iPhones won’t be the odd one out where charging and accessories are concerned, but also because of how much more advanced USB-C has the potential to be compared to the Lightning cable. The problem is there’s a very real chance Apple will screw it all up by being, well, all Apple about it.
user posted image

Or at least that’s what the rumors have been saying, and there’s no guarantee that the online speculation has any degree of truth. But. if I’m being honest it would actually be more surprising if Apple didn't do something to ruin USB-C’s potential on the iPhone.

iPhone 15 USB-C may be limited — unless you buy Pro
Lightning first debuted in 2012, back when USB was not as good as its more recent incarnations. It was a time when USB 2.0 reigned supreme, and Lightning has been stuck at that level ever since — complete with the 480 Mbps data transfer rate. Meanwhile USB has advanced through several different versions, resulting in the most recent USB 4 version 2 — which offers 80 Gbps data transfer speeds.

Currently, USB-C to USB-C cables are also capable of charging speeds up to 240W, though your actual charging speed will depend on whichever device you’re actively using. iPhones currently top out at 20W, provided you’re using a USB-C to Lightning charger and cable.

I’m bringing this up because there is a rumor claiming that the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus may be stuck at the same level as Lightning. Both phones are still rumored to be getting USB-C ports, but the actual port itself will be USB 2.0. The changes are effectively skin deep, and both phones will have the same speed-based limitations as the Lightning cable.

The iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max will reportedly have no such limitations, and word is the two devices will support USB 3.2. It’s not the fastest or most recent version of USB, by any means, but it still offers 20 Gbps transfer speeds — more than 40 times faster than USB 2.0. This more advanced version of USB also opens up the potential to connect to more accessories that USB 2.0 isn’t fast enough to handle, including external displays .

The good news here is that USB-C’s maximum charging speed isn’t affected across different versions of the standard. “Hi-Speed USB” as USB 2.0 is now officially known can still handle charging speeds up to 240W if you have the right kind of cable.

So in a situation where the iPhone 15’s type-C port is limited to USB 2.0 speeds, the only charging restrictions you’ll face will come directly from Apple. This may be the result of the phone’s hardware, and how much power it can safely receive at any given time, or it could come from some specific software-induced shenanigans.

Made for iPhone could also make the transition
If you go out and buy a Lightning cable right now, you are left with two choices. Either buy one that has been certified by Apple, or buy one that hasn’t and deal with the fact your maximum charging speed will be cut in half. That’s all thanks to Apple’s “Made for iPhone” program (MFi), which certifies chargers and accessories to ensure they are fit for purpose. Meaning people can see the logo and understand that the product in question is both safe and sufficiently high quality.
user posted image
Apple doesn’t do this out of the goodness of its heart; the company earns royalties on sales of Made for iPhone products. We don’t know how much Apple actually makes, but it does fall under the Wearable, Home and Accessories department that pulled in $41.1 billion last year — though this number does include money from the sale of products like the Apple Watch, AirPods, HomePod, and so on.

Up until now the MFi program has been limited to Apple’s in-house connectors — MagSafe, Lightning, and such. USB-C has been left alone, despite the growing number of Apple products that use the connector. But none of those products are the iPhone, which might as well be Apple’s personal money-printing machine — accounting for 52% of the company’s revenue in 2022.

So it’s no surprise that there have been rumors the Made for iPhone program may be making the jump to USB-C to coincide with its debut on the iPhone 15. That means using the USB-C cable and charger that came with, say, a Google Pixel, likely won’t be able to charge an iPhone 15 as fast as one made, or certified, by Apple.

The transition to USB-C was meant to facilitate better compatibility between devices. The idea is that your Android charging cable won’t be rendered completely unusable because you upgraded to an iPhone — or vice versa. EU officials have even gone on record to say that any Made For iPhone-style restrictions would be illegal in the region.

Ensuring safety is one thing, but it’s not like we’re back in the early days of USB-C when stories of exploding chargers were all over the place. And it’s certainly rather suspicious that we never saw any sign of Made for iPhone going after USB-C until we started hearing believable reports that the port would be coming to its best selling product.

Bottom Line
In fairness to Apple, it’s not the only company to introduce proprietary restrictions on USB-C. Various companies have restricted the fastest charging speeds to their own homemade chargers, with third party alternatives being forced to use significantly slower speeds. But the number of companies that have done this has dwindled, especially as USB Power Delivery has gotten more common.

USB-C has a great many benefits over Apple’s Lightning cable, least of all the fact that the port doesn’t have to be stuck in 2012, the way Lighting does. But the rumors of these restrictions almost feels like Apple is throwing a tantrum at being told what to do. Much like asking a child to eat their broccoli, the desired results might not be what you’d initially hoped for.

The U in USB stands for Universal, but by potentially applying these restrictions, USB-C on the iPhone 15 may be anything but.

Last week, the latest tvOS 17 beta revealed four model numbers that almost certainly correspond with the upcoming iPhone 15 handsets. But there were also two mystery models: iPhone14,1 and iPhone14,9, which don’t seem to correspond to anything.
user posted image
Now the developer who originally found the model numbers has come up with his own theory. AppleDBdev’s @aaronp613 believes the two model numbers don’t refer to a new iPhone SE or the mythical foldable iPhone Flip, but two older handsets refreshed with USB-C connectivity.

The logic here is simple. 16 refers to the upcoming A17 chipset (powering the iPhone 15 Pros), 15 references the A16 (regular iPhone 15s) and 14 to the A15, which powers both the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini. Apple typically discontinues Pro models after a generation, presumably to avoid them looking like an appealing budget option, so the regular handsets seem more likely candidates.

To be clear, @aaronp613 is explicit that this is guesswork rather than inside information, but it makes a kind of sense. If Apple is about to make the jump into USB-C accessories, why wouldn’t it refresh an older and soon-to-be cheaper model with the current connectivity?

The quibble I would personally have with this theory is it being the iPhone 13 rather than the 14. To me, it would make more sense for Apple to keep the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus around for another generation, and the numbers still fit given both also use the A15 chipset.

For his part, @aaronp613 addresses this directly, arguing that it “would make more sense to discontinue the iPhone 14 line and have the 13 as a cheap option.”

I don’t entirely buy this. Although the hardware has barely changed between them, casual phone buyers will still be more inclined to buy something with a higher number attached. Unless Apple is having seller’s remorse for killing off the mini range, I just can’t see a reason for it to give USB-C to the 13 over the 14.

We should find out for sure soon enough. For over a decade, Apple has released new numbered handsets in September (with only a Covid-shaped October exception in 2020), and the latest rumor suggests we could be looking at a September 12 reveal this year.
