these don't use silicon bottom out as most others right?

I think Gateron Zero also is a nice interesting alternative if it wasnt so exp.

yes, no silicon at the top and bottom.

gateron zero is interesting indeed. i didn't get it previously because it was out of stock. after that i focus on other things.

afaik silent linears are usually below 4mm. i think old brands like gat, kailh, cherry, still release switches with 4mm travel.

this is just to get rid of warnings when compiling firmware with qmk. you can do this if you think they are eye sores.

when you upgraded milc to 1.9.0, qmk will start throwing warnings about depreciated functions, mainly milc.set_metadata, and cli._subcommand. my current base environment is qmk-0.26.6 and python-3.12.7.

1. file: qmk-env/lib/python.3.12/site-packages/qmk_cli/script_qmk.py:
- add 'from milc import cli' after 'import milc'
- find and replace 'milc.set_metadata' with 'cli.milc_options'

2. file: qmk_firmware/lib/python/qmk/decorators.py:
- find and replace 'cli._subcommand' with 'cli.subcommand_name'

that's all.

edit: as long as the source codes are maintained from time to time to cope with qmk's breaking changes, everything will work with qmk's latest. this include codes that were not compatible with or not found in official qmk.

Hi guys, wanna ask out of curiosity sake.

I see lotsa discussion about the switches & keycaps, but I just curious if the keyboard board itself is important like would it matter if a cheapo keyboard swap with cherry switches would be much different from a branded unit that has the same switches?

yes. in terms of sound and feel, they are the final product of a keyboard. a keyboard consists of many parts, made from different materials, form factors, keyboard constructions, etc. on top of that, mods are applied to improve sound and feel, based on personal preferences.

back to your question: even though both use same switches, the other parts of the keyboards, like case, pcb, plate, presence of foams, stabilizers, keyboard constructions, keycaps, and related mods, still affect the outcomes.

Oh I see. Recent seen a lot of offers for Aula & Leaven keyboards and they are really cheap when compared with branded ones.

just keep in mind that not all kits that are advertised as 'qmk-ready' has full qmk source code available to keyboard owners for firmware management.

officially qmk has a public issue thread that lists those which violate qmk copyrights, https://github.com/qmk/qmk_firmware/issues/24085

oh yeah now the market is flooded with choices. some are as cheap as they can be.

however, there are better options, depending on individual experience and skills. they might not be as cheap, but they fulfill most requirements and expectations of a user.

nice thanks for the updates. imo peach is relatively better because i like to use nylon housings for silent builds. however it has 3.3mm of key travel, so it's not for me.

i am typing on kailh's fried egg. i lubed them with cn-made grease, like krytox gpl 205, but easier to apply. (pure krytox gpl 205 is like wax) it's quiet when i type.

haha.. why i want silent keys now is because the case i am using is hollow sounding and not easy to fill the innards (dactly like 3d printed)

nice smile.gif

i stick to 64-key 60%, with 65/75/tkl sometimes. the journey is still on-going hehe

i am lucky that i can still get parts for the same layout, for mx and topre key switches

since the first thread of mkb at lyn, we have gone through a lot. however each generation of users experienced the hobby differently.

for years, i already achieved what i actually wanted for my collection: my plan is always to collect boards that have the same preferred layout, with different parts and keyboard constructions. the idea was shaped after the fact that back then there were soldered options only, and it's dumb imo to collect whole boards, just because i wanted to have different switch types, stabilizers, foams, etc.

i started to learn stuff, and observed my typing habits. i realized that most keys in my tkl were untouched. the same happened to 75, and 65, while 60 ansi doesn't have arrow keys that i use a lot.

then, hotswap sockets was introduced by kailh, and so was gk64. since then 64-key 60 is my preferred layout. after that, manufacturers smelled opportunities. various spin-offs became available, and things like key switches in different configurations were produced to complement gaps and demands of users. by today's standards, earliest batches of gk64 were bad, and were limited in part options. foams was not even a thing before that period of time.

i'm glad that my plan is still valid today: i just use generic parts in the market, started with tray-mount. top- and gasket-mount came later. few years later, topre options finally appeared in the market. silap-silap there will be options for he key switches much later hehe

How does those HE switch sound? I just read that typically HE switch does not sound as good as MX switch, but that is grossly oversimplifiying it.

Are you using those HE switch for competitive gaming?

I'm just thinking of if I would want to try HE switch if I'm not gaming, lol

zFrontier had a sale on Labour Day so I picked up KAT Cat's Eye Alphas and Coleverak kits at 15% off.

Committed to Colemak DH now on my daily driver at work.

1 week in and I'm still at a pathetic 18wpm.

This site has helped a lot:
https://gnusenpai.net/colemakclub/

Alphas - Cat's Eye dark
Numrow - Arctic
Mods - Atlantis
Spacebars - Lich

So I have dye sub, reverse dye sub, and doubleshot KAT all on one board.

Damn...I've been suffering this layout at the office for 5 months now. Still under 50 wpm even on my best days. Need to spend more time on the practice site if I want to progress faster, but been busy with work.
Attached Image
35 wpm 97% accuracy, one of my better tests.

Did this test focused more on accuracy than speed. I can hit raw speed of high 40s but a lot of errors.

I can't recall exactly when I switched to Colemak-DH, but it was shortly after you sparked my interest in split keyboards. I transitioned fully to using both a split keyboard and Colemak right away. For me, it was never about typing speed; it was always about comfort.

42 keys

Yes, my move to split was definitely for comfort. My move to Colemak-DH was because of itchy finger. Haha.

Thanks. The first few weeks I was scared I would give up. I definitely believe I will get there since my basic speed is no longer torturing me.
