I don't think so, many folks don't really want a large watch. Large watches also tend to get trapped in places especially when you do more sports like trail running, off road and more.

i'm thinking to upgrade from my S4, but after seeing the price i think i'll go for S8

i always love diving watch becos of its size although i am not a diver at all.

to me, the size of ultra is just nice. i never buy apple watch at all becos of the sizes are too small for my wrist.

Yeah the Ultra is definitely for a specific group of users. I was initially saying I thought it was pricey but my wife who is a diver says it is cheap because the cheapest dive computer from Garmin is RM5k. Its all about context, use case and perspective.

But for me, if you want me to spend 3k on a smart watch which have no reselling value…I can’t do it 😆

The Ultra is aimed at a demographic most aren't in, me especially.

Currently using Apple Watch Series 4 and garmin fenix 6x interchange depending on activities. But always have to slot in time for the mechanical watches too.

Nobody buys a digital watch with a resale value in mind man....if you can't afford it then there are cheaper alternatives out there.

Im also keen on the ultra but 3.8k is quite a hefty price to pay, considering the Garmin Instinct 2 im looking at is around RM1.8k nia

I think there is 2 ways to look at it.

People can come from a Garmin smartwatch comparison perspective.
Or people can come from a perspective that it is an Apple Watch with Garmin like features and ruggedness.

I am in the second camp. It is an Apple Watch first and foremost.
And I'll probably get one additional band together with it as the new bands look pretty good even though it is another 400 bucks. One Trail band and one Alpine band for me.

Too bad the dive app is paid subscription. Guess will stick with Shearwater.

But I am not a diver, hiker, runner upgrading from my S4. This year I almost broke d.. upgraded my MBP 2014 to MBA M2, planning upgrade my iPhone X to 14 Pro, so I guess I will upgrade my watch only earlier next year.

I went from Apple Watch to Garmin, now on Garmin Instinct 2. Thé best bang for bucks ever considering I don’t even have to charge the watch for a month, and yes I exercise 6 days a week with that watch.

But the best thing is that it’s so rugged and well constructed that even if I hit the watch while working out, on the gym equipment or even one time I fell down on the road, there wasn’t any scratch let alone scuffs. Extremely stress free experience. Apple Watch wouldn’t have survived that, in fact my previous Apple Watch was blue in colour and the colour already started fading a little even though I washed it every time after I exercised, and that was within 3 months period only. It didn’t seem to be able to handle chlorines, nor sweat very well. Not sure about this ultra though, but the battery life is always an issue if you are used to Garmin already.

yeh thanks for the feedback, garmin have the more solid battery life due to the MIPS display vs full color on AW

i scratched my AW while indoor bouldering few months back, so much for tougher glass haha. it was super deep as well

im still waiting 23rd Sept since itll be out and people will start reviewing then we can know how it actually performs.

it is actually because the rubber protector - something similar like Casio G Shock. that case wrapped the whole watch unit. -- for Garmin Instinct

Yea, the MIP display really save a lot battery....no wonder last time my G Shock watch battery can last so long....

But if on GPS, the Garmin Instinct 2 can last up to 30h only.

yeah so which in the end it sort of doesnt feel as significant between different models. granted AW GPS mode isnt really great either

unless i picked those battery behemoth from Coros or Garmin Enduro series la, then its even more massive gap

none, even those standalone garmin GPS devices are at best up to 1 day AFAIK?

Garmin has OLED display watches as well, that easily lasted for 7 days. I used Venu 2s too just like how I used my AW and easily lasted for 7 days. But I wanted something rugged and my exercises are going into higher intensity zone, and I quite like Instinct so I jumped there.

AWU looks tempting but already have AW6..

time for an upgrade, buy first think later lol

which band would u choose? the orange one looks nice ... but so is the velcro and diving type ...

The orange fits the watch but I feel may be a little too bright for my day to day. It just screams for attention on my wrist.

I'm thinking of getting the green alpine loop and the trail velcro which is supposed to be super comfortable. For sports, I heard it is backward compatible with earlier straps do I'll use my existing sports band for my series 3.

yes was thinking of the velcro also - just worry the sweat smell in the long run .. i think the alpine loop as well since it could be fabric ... may end up with the diving loop option / ocean band ...

I've been using the velcro sports loop which is fabric for 5 years. But I don't use it for sports due to it being fabric, I go with the sports band as it washes off easily. Velcro for day to day, no issues with sweat smell. Both the trail and alpine I think are fabric which are more comfortable options.

If you have an existing sports band, you can use it with the Ultra as I saw vids of people confirming those were compatible.

i feel the ocean fluoroelastomer loop are more fit for all situations

i used the nylon based sports loop and while comfy, its gets dirty easily which you wouldnt want in outdoor?

The most I got from AW is 2 days but that’s because I didn’t wear it. Otherwise it’s less than 24 hours. Exercising does take up more battery cause the HR and gps and calculation work.

Yeah if you need to disable so many craps just to extend the battery, you might as well get a normal watch la.

cause i heard of stories where older garmins are instantly stopped in support after new iteration is out and they dont even let you add in workout profiles

Use Workoutdoors, you can even import trail maps into it.

So far Ultra's are being sold out everywhere that has launched the watch. Those who ordered them late, see their delivery dates moved to November

I hope I am able to get it in time for my trip to Chiang Mai end of the year.

Very tempted to get the Ultra solely for the 49mm screen. I am currently using a S7 Stainless Steel and I find it a little too heavy for workouts.

Now would the Ultra look good for day-to-day or a formal setting, that remains to be seen.

Seems like nowadays apple’s marketing is so strong that it pushes all its customers to go for high end products which the demand is higher than any lower end one.

So far I never use for more than 2 years la. Cause I only started exercise like a crazy person since Covid started. But from what I could read and research, a lot of people use their Garmin for 5-7 years cause their watches can easily last that long.

Since you are active in this forum, I think you have already decided on Ultra.

im always lurking in the forums for anything im interested really, very leaning into Ultra due to how much ive been using my Series 4 (less learning curve) + more ngam my usage of primarily urban dweller with abit outdoor stuff

but sadly just the battery life despite improved its still not up to my par. prolly cause i was hiking recently in Mt K and i find the battery in my series 4 couldnt handle the duration taken for me to go up (took 4-5hrs to reach base camp) and then summit it took 3 hrs to peak but my AW gassed out during descent + ferrata haha

garmin's battery life is the major win thats skewing my leaning lo. it would be damn good to have weeks long battery life..

But you don’t climb mount K everyday also lo. So that depends on your needs. But sports enthusiasts will definitely go for Garmin, solely because the watches won’t give up on them halfway. Especially some logs their route via the garmin maps.

I’m not hiker myself but I have faced a few situations that when it’s finally time for me to exercise in the evening, only to find that my AW didn’t have enough juice anymore for my 1 hour run or exercises. So I had to just sit around for like 20 minutes for it to charge. Lol! That was the reason why I jump ship.

Sounds like the AWU ticks most of the boxes except extreme edge cases. Even that, may be bridged by the new low power mode rolling out soon.

The AWU is the closest one size fits all solution that I could find for me.

i really hope the new low power mode will do the magic. otherwise dropping 3.8k onto AWU doesnt seem feasible, the Rm1.8k garmin instinct 2 feels more worth price/perf wise

The way I see it, it is not purely performance or you would have gone with other alternatives like Garmin.

It is also the fact that this is an Apple Watch first. With iOS integration beyond what others offer, and it has that 'cool' factor being Apple. A product like the AWU is does NOT sell on price vs performance metrics. The best price/perf winner in the Apple space is the SE. Everything else sells on a premium because people want the highest end device available. Which is why I think the AWU will cannibalize some AW8 sales, but that is ok because it is part of Apple's upsell strategy.

yeps, the default fitness tracking + workout profiles are pretty good already. most of the things i frequently track on is available on both AW and Garmins, so its not a differentiating factor

yes on the final paragraph. call this the usual apple "ecosystem" gimmick, but i really value this aspect from Apple. cool factor isnt much, otherwise i wouldve just thrown money every iteration lol

AWU def is apple's foray into hybrid fitness/smart/outdoor and despite it cannibalising AW8, theyre still getting the potential targeted people into the list which is good enough. after all, 2nd most top revenue in Apple are services
