I doubt normal users will notice any difference… Anyways, am disappointed they didn’t see fit to bring back the HDMI port on the MBA like they did for the MBP 14. RM1k difference just for the new chip is a bit of an ask for most people.

Wanted to upgrade my old intel macbook air (though just 3 years old) to this new one. Love the midnight blue color. but that price is just too much for me. Think need to save for another year or two.

for the currency hike recently, I think the price for this m2 MBA will keep rising.
But hopefully it will not.

The M1 Air is being retained as the base model now. Maybe look at the M1 Pros to see if got good bargain now that it has been discontinued.

serious the pro with m2 chip is totally a joke... the existing of it seems to just to improve the sale of the m1 and m2 air.

Well, the based model is still RM4399, so no increase there. However the 8 core CPU and 8 core GPU model costs RM100 more than the previous M1 model but given it’s a new chipset and new design, maybe that’s justified.

Better camera, newer design, but smaller storage if compared with the 8 Core GPU M1 MBA.

Really wanted to get this but the base model is priced so close to the base MBP.

Somehow, it doesn’t really make sense.

MBP thicker, heavier, older camera, 2 USB-C ports, but longer battery, touchbar
MBA thinner, lighter, newer camera, MagSafe + 2 USB C ports

The "base" model is a 2 years old model... expect it going to be dropped at reduce price. sweat.gif

Might as well just get the Air since the spec almost the same except for the touch bar...

feeling they are replicating the ipad air m1 vs ipad pro. sweat.gif

But considering the fact that the Air doesn’t have active cooling, it might not be strong enough to sustain its speed over time longer time like the pro.

The pro’s display also seems to be better. Anyone has the figures to compare these 2 displays?

Better call them to ask for more details

Really disappointed with the pricing.
1k more than older version with pretty much the same spec except for chipset and the 1080p camera and the NOTCH.

*just found out the the newer MBP doesnt even comes with magsafe and still use 720p camera. doh.gif

Ya, I think the discontinued base MBP 13 with M1 will probably be a better buy if the price comes almost as low as the old MBA - otherwise then probably the new MBA would be the better choice.

My office laptop uses type c. It’ll be easy to be able to use both magsafe at home and type c in office.

M2 base model enough for adobe software?
Like photoshop, illustrator, indesign, premiere, audition, etc…
Photoshop got picture editing around few hundred picture,
Illustrator for designing/editing which sometime involve complex effect.
Indesign variable date around 20k data, authoring book.

Also the screen crack solve?

Expect to survive another 3 more years.

what windows laptop can do such performance?

Agreed… My 2014 MacBook Air still works great. Even running Windows 8 on Bootcamp smoothly still, hahaha.. I’ve been meaning to upgrade since the 12” MacBooks were launched but haven’t been able to justify it, hahaha…

Not a lot faster than Air M1 actually. Add another ~RM1k you are into Pro 14 territory which still has a faster CPU, a lot faster GPU, a nicer screen and speakers.

Don't forget abt the 1080p camera. It has been complaints about the 720p camera on the M1 MBA, and now the M2 MBP also using the same old camera.

Hopefully we get it almost as soon as USA. Fingers crossed.

I don't think they were lazy. I think they put it there so we can justify the increased MBA m2 price by comparing to the MBP 13 m2

If it didn't exist, we will be focused on saying the MBA m2 increased in price - by right it should be $999, replacing the M1 MBA. But instead, they kept the pricing across the board and increased their profit margin.

And you can see it is working, nobody said MBA m2 is expensive lol, when it actually is. MBA has always had an entry price of $999 until now.

Well, the entry level MBA M1 is still available at $999, so that’s their justification. Had they kill off the MBA M1 and started the MBA M2 at those asking prices then yeah, consumers will probably give them hell laugh.gif

You look at iPhone product pricing
when new one come out, it will take the original price, and the old one take a price cut.

Anyway this is genius of Apple. And given the chip shortage, I guess they have no reason to price it cheap!

No justification for having an MBA M1, a two year old lappy to be still selling at the same price when it was first released. It is not about our lousy currency as well cause the price in the US remains the same....

Yeah, there should have been a $100 price cut for the old M1. Anyways, lots of retailers are handing out discounts on the MBA M1 so those who really want one can hunt around.

There was a RM10 for every RM100 spent discount on Lazada during 6.6. Probably have to wait for 7.7 for next round of discounts.

expected due to the COVID/War/Fx/Inflations etc. don't expected cheaper price tho, not realistic. probably another 2 years to go and it will just stay the same situation or worsen.

Photoshop got picture editing around few hundred picture,
Illustrator for designing/editing which sometime involve complex effect.
Indesign variable date around 20k data, authoring book.
Also the screen crack solve?

Hi sifus, typically when should one expect Malaysia to have in stock

Assuming:
Launch almost same time as US
Willing to queue

Possible to have it before September?

Does anyone know back in 2020 M1 MBA launch in Aug when does the stock come in MY?

Reason being if that's absolutely impossible then I'll just get a hand on M2 MBP13 or M1 MBA

I wanted to buy the MBA M2 on launch day — always buy Apple stuff on launch day. But this time around Apple really screw us over. The base model is basically a lemon and Apple did it on purpose.

Guess I’ll be ordering the MBA M1 base model instead.

For those who will upgrade the SSD and/or RAM, its a good machine, but with that kind of money why not buy the MBP 14.

I would still wait for actual release with actual reviews of the device. These are all speculations. MBA M1 256gb itself is using a faster SSD vs MBP M2 256gb. Since MBA M2 is a redesign, could be a different SSD from MBP M2. MBA M1 will still be there to order anyway later..

To me, base specs is enough for ur usage

16gb is just to futureproof in case you need more (u plan to do more resource intensive stuffs)

As for storage … there’s always external HDD (cheaper) option

Guys, is it recommend or ok to just take the basic model that is price RM5,499 (8GB Ram and 256GB storage) ?

Just normal surf web, watching movie and some microsoft apps only?
*
For light usage, 256gb and 8gb is fine.

If Intel based that can do bootcamp windows, 512gb is min.

Now m1 chip u are only on one OS it is ok actually.

I’m getting it with these configurations:

- Midnight
- M2 with 8 core GPU
- 16GB RAM
- 256GB SSD

Is this okay? Or should I get the 10 core GPU model.

As for ssd space, I really don’t need more than 256GB. My 2015 MBP had 128GB and I could never fill it up with permanent things. I use a lot of cloud space and external drives.

2k. depend the swollen impact the top part or not.
If no - 500+
if yes - 2k
Lucky mine got apple care. Pay just 800 to claim 2k warranty. So macbook must buy applecare no matter how (get it before 1 year expire).
My iphone & ipad - no need applecare

3rd party will be those repair shops located at shopping malls lor

I already found a buyer for this macbook pro but just realised the battery is swollen (I usually place it on stand so won’t notice unless I put it down on table)

The buyer doesn’t mind if I go to 3rd party repair but if the price is similar (below RM600) then I will prefer to go to Switch (this Switch website doesn’t have service cost for macs doh.gif)

I got mine replaced at a third party shop in digital mall last time. It was for a mbp 2015. Was charged RM280. Not sure of different mode prices.

Btw, it lasted me longer than the original battery!

no. who said that????

Give you some Clue.

NITENDO SWITCH.

CPU = ARM 4 Cortex-A57 cores @ 1.02 GHz

But see this

With EMULATOR, you can run SWITCH Game on PC better than SWITCH ( pc hardware is much more powerful )

Not to mention PS1/2/3 emulator.... heck, even PS4 emulator is developing.

The best part :

APPLE itself is WORKING ON IT
user posted image

x86 Emulator.
what apple need might be DirectX Emulator? ( not sure will this infringe MS copyright? )

if PC Gaming still going very strong.
with APPLE resources......

Or its fan base... there will be a PC Game Emulator on MACs

It depends on your usage. Need to be more specific. 16GB will be enough for most people with regular use. Just don't consider 8GB. It just filled up very fast.

But how bad is it. I really don’t need 512GB and don’t want to topup. I came from a 2015 MBP. Will this base spec ssd be any slower than that?

Will I even feel it in my daily tasks? using chrome and running microsoft office apps.

Btw, I upgraded to 16GB RAM.

From 2015MBP certainly it is still going to be a significant improvement la.

Dun see a big prob with the 256GB SSD even it is slower than 512GB. For daily tasks like web browsers or office apps it is still overkilled.

Just find that 256GB + 16GB ram is quite a weird combination. But of course 16GB Ram u buy for future proof then ok la. The more the merrier anyway.

256 is fine.
that’s why those reviews pushing the limit during testing, scenario where you won’t encounter on your daily normal usage, therefore you can say is suffice for normal user.

256 is enough for normal user. but the review from reviewer on m2 seem talking about performance issue when run out of ram and use swap file, then bad performance.
been running 8GB and 256GB SSD-MBP 2017 , so far did not encounter issue .
some reviewer also say 16GB encounter out of memory before.

Yes 256gb will be sufficient last time the Intel chip MacBook I will recon 512gb min for boot camp purpose. Since now apple silicon mac only runs macOS, 256gb is certainly enough for normal usage.

Just if normal usage, can push to the limit to stick to 8gb also. (but if one needs future proof, of course no harm to go with 16gb) just the more u upgrade the more the price is close to the base MacBook Pro 14-inch.

Dun think the arguments are really true. They are making a lot of extreme usage on it to ‘justify’ the slowness. For real world user usage dun think it will be a big prob.

Apple ssd is usually a lot faster than competitor one and it is way faster than any external ssd u can find now too. If one is talking about they can use external ssd without going for higher storage option for their MacBook such as 512Gb and above, they can certainly survive with the base ssd speed.

But of course if one is really concern about the ssd, just go for 512gb for piece of mind.

This is bad news for those getting the 256GB M2 MBA. Not acceptable since it’s more expensive than 256GB M1 MBA and the SSD speed is much slower.

And yes, it’s true that the Apple Silicon architecture uses up a lot of swap file from the SSD itself (part of why it is snappy), so the slower SSD speed would be quite apparent especially if the RAM hardware is limited too.

And agree with westlife, if one were to top up to 512GB SSD for MBA M2 (which has similar fast SSD speed with the 256GB MBA M1), might as well just add a little more to get the 14” MBP.

Is ok to purchase the base modal if you are a light and casual user. Sometimes just doesn’t understand about all these paranoid with abit slower SSD. If really slower few second compare with the Macbook Air M1 does it really ruin our live and time?

8GB ram not enuf, it will take swap file from ssd. so faster ssd, better performance.

But upgrading the RAM on order is a smarter use of money. RAM can never be replaced. SSD just use external also can.

Light and casual user is fine to get 8gb

16gb is to future proof but u need to live with the fact that u wasted money for the expensive upgrade if u nvr gonna utilise that much

So basically depends on FOMO then …

And because for base model with only 8GB RAM, the SSD is used as swap memory.

When multitasking - multiple tabs open in browser, Spotify, WhatsApp, outlook all running at the same time… I *believe* the base MBA M2 will be slower than the base MBA M1 in actual real world use, not just benchmark.

I don’t do any sort of editing. Will mostly be using it for MS Office, PDF, torrenting and lots of web browsing. I guess I’ll stick to 256GB and 16GB RAM.

Upgrading to 512GB SSD and 16GB RAM brings it scarily close to MBP 14 price.

I can’t find a reason to do so.

What was the original estimated shipping date?

I called Apple and upgraded mine from 256GB to 512GB.

So my config now is:

8-core GPU
16GB RAM
512GB SSD

I have recently ordered 16+256GB version MBA, and after reading the news about 256GB SSD being slower, should I be concern about lower sequential read speed? Because for normal usage like accessing apps or internet browsing, random read/write is more important right?

My usage is only just chrome browsing, spotify, netflix, background running wechat WA line etc and microsoft office only, no video rendering gaming or photo editing. Under this kind of usage, not sure the single NAND SSD will show its disadvantage here.

Mac sifu pls enlighten me coz this is my first mac, been using windows all my life.

I would go for 8GB + 512GB if I were buying. So that I have more storage. But you can see head to head comparison and draw your own conclusion.

I placed order for MBA M1 instead. Don’t feel this time MBA M2 is worth the price increase asked by Apple.

I thought of 8+512 at first, but ram is non-upgradeable while storage can always be extended using external HDD or NAS. I Actually don't need more storage as I have most of my things on cloud and I rarely download stuff as well. My windows laptop with 256gb is only 50% full after so many years of usage.

Since I ordered the 16Gb version, can I say that... as long as I do not multitask too much and cause my ram to use swap, I won't notice the speed difference in my daily usage, is this correct?

16gb is to futureproof as im planning to use this laptop for 5 years (or more)

Actually this is a special case here.. Because if you do not take the 512ssd..you will only have 1 x256ssd solder on the mother board rather than 2 x 128gb.. No matter what external hdd you have it will just be 50% slower because instead of 2 Lane Highway its now 1 Lane.

Hence my question is... for my usage like google chrome, microsoft office, netflix this type of activities, will this 50% slower SSD actually affect me? Since I already have 16GB and probably won't trigger swap memory much. Within my budget, I can use choose either upgrade 16gb ram or 512gb ssd, but i don't store many things in laptop also... sweat.gif

No i think for your simple tasks even 8gb ram will be enough. Only file transfer speeds will be most likely affected for your usage. Then again, are you going to compare side by side with another laptop.. haha no right? And like you said, you wont store much so I guess it wont affect most people.

I guess most of us probably think from Windows machine, and today, windows machine we likely need 16GB. But, M1/M2 is a different story and it seems like they handle stuff pretty well with 8GB, but not on Windows OS.

Actually for my usage (Lightroom and minimal video editing), both will be fine.
Just that i would really prefer 512. The price diff. for 512 for M2 not really justifiable.
Also, the "slower" SSD on the M2 (base 256) really not helping much.
Probably will hang on to this M1, until the next iteration comes along... or until the 3 years apple care runs out... then can relook at the future models.

Yeah thats quite true, 8gb on MacOS is quite usable and smooth. In Windows 16gb for smoother experience.

Simple answer for you, I don't know how YOU use chrome. I love to open ~30 tabs on my laptop, not only that, I use BOTH Safari & Chrome. Safari for personal, Chrome for work accessing Google Drive, Docs etc. I got 60 tabs on my iPhone now. Don't listen to idiots who tell you there's folders and what not. How they use their computer is none of your business. Ask YOURSELF how YOU USE YOUR COMPUTER. At the same time I have WhatsApp, Slack, Outlook, Calendar open.

It is not heavy load, but it uses a lot of memory.

For MY USAGE, confirm I need to rely on swap even if its 16GB RAM. My 5600x + 32GB RAM uses swap too with my usage pattern. The MBA M2 base model, that slower SSD will definitely affect the performance. I was so ready to buy the MBA M2 in midnight base model, but the price hike AND the slower base model SSD basically turned me away from it completely. So now I am just waiting for my MBA M1 base model to arrive.

You do you, but facts remain as facts, that base SSD is slow and if you ever use swap memory, it'll slow the machine down.

Someone once told me that, with a lot of tabs opened on chrome, 8GB of memory might not be enough. So Safari is the way to go.

From personal experience, Yes, Safari seems to work better than Chrome on MacOS. I use both for reasons outlined above.

Base spec. Best bang for bucks. Multitasking with many apps open != multicore. A faster CPU won't help WITHOUT the memory & swap keeping up.
The things I do are not heavy load, but uses a lot of memory to keep them "open".

For people who are heavy users, I recommend just get the MBP 14, you get the better screen, 2x external output.. rather than upgrading the MBA M2.

I've used the first unibody MacBook back in 2008, and after that I had the MBA 11, MBA 13, MBP 13 2015, MBP 13 2017, MBP 13 M1. MBA 11 was awesome for the portability, I used that laptop the most (now using iPad base spec).

Can. Even the new M2 can. Just when swap is used, it will be a bit slower - in terms of responsiveness.

You can watch the video I shared earlier and see.

From what I read and watch on youtube, only when the RAM is filled up then swap memory will be triggered, else by default everything goes to RAM only.

This is like my usage. I don’t do serious video/photo editing. But my normal usage tends to use a lot of RAM.

I need about 10 tabs of chrome at one time. Btw, have to use chrome because that’s where my work flow is. It makes it easier when going from windows laptop at work to my iphone and then mac at home.

I also leave my torrent running in the background with spotify, g-drive etc. Also use word and heavy excel files constantly. 16GB is a must for this. I agree that there are ways to not need 16GB RAM but I’m not willing to change the way I use my laptop just for that.

Hence my question is... for my usage like google chrome, microsoft office, netflix this type of activities, will this 50% slower SSD actually affect me? Since I already have 16GB and probably won't trigger swap memory much. Within my budget, I can use choose either upgrade 16gb ram or 512gb ssd, but i don't store many things in laptop also...  sweat.gif
*
Definitely not. Slower SSD will only affects you if you're dealing with very large files. It will only trigger swap memory if ur app has memory leaks or if your app requires large RAM to start with. Don't worry about tabs for Chrome. I have a colleague who have at least 60 tabs open every time and each time I ask him why this specific tab is open. He couldn't figure it out just he thinks is cool because most people does that. doh.gif rclxub.gif

Just saw it on display in Mid Valley Machines store. Looks amazing and feels much thinner than the M1 Air.

Also made some observations when compared the base spec with MBP 14 base spec.

At idle, the both use about 4.2GB of RAM. When I open multiple desktops with apps to simulate my typical usage, the mbp can push to about 8.6GB of RAM. The MBA stayed at about 6.5-7GB of RAM.

My guess is that it started removing idle data from its memory while the mbp still kept it. I’m guessing that when I push the active apps a little more, it’ll start accessing Swap memory. I might be wrong. It might just delete more and maintain its performance. But from what I notice, while MacOS is definitely more efficient than Windows, it can definitely make use of more RAM. Upgrading your RAM can make it a better experience but if you don’t you won’t feel it….for now.

Went to KLCC Machines store to view the actual unit. Midnight colour look stunning in actual, very blue under the typical apple store lighting. Thin and light when folded, feel like an enlarged ipad pro with keyboard attached. (Or probably in fact it is an enlarged ipad)....

Fingerprints and smudges are obvious but doens't bother me much because my own dell laptop is also like that, already get used to it, or not as bad as what those youtuber says. But I do believe the scratch around the port could be apparent after long period of ownership.

For the ram, around 4GB when it is idle, and shoot up to 6+ Gb after around 10 safari tabs and some other apps in the dock (my typical usage), and last time went down to 3.1GB after closing all those app. I think 8GB shouldnt be an issue for light user even with slower 256GB ssd since the swap won't kick in also.

Found this video on youtube. If you have extra Rm800 budget for upgrade, and probably can only stretch your budget to either one of the upgrade (Ram or SSD), pretty much ram make more sense if you are not the person copying large file in and out frequently. 16GB can sustain MBA performance in higher capacity when your RAM usage is higher and reduce the frequency of Swap being used. However, if you store more things in laptop you can opt for 512GB instead.

This is my first thought when I tried the MBP.

MacOS can definitely make use of more RAM. On the other hand, SSD speed is only important when you're doing extreme works like rendering videos, etc., or using Swap memory which won't happen if you have 16GB RAM. SSD space is really up to your personal use. But you can always expand by using external drives.

So if you only have enough money to upgrade one of it which in Malaysia is RM800, upgrade the RAM. Just save up and get a good external drive later.

I had a space grey one before so just wanted to try a new color. Didnt like the previous Gold color but starlight seems alright.(consoling myself) 😅🤣

The problem with all these powdered aluminum coating is the tendency to wear off in contact with high acidity (ala sweat) in a long run and it will defo show signs of aging much faster vs Starlight / Silver.

For me, yes the new colors are appealing and attractive but long run they wouldn't hold the color for long. I think recently I have only been getting the same ol' boring Silver - it does look evergreen eventually lol.

Is the fingerprint on midnight easy to clean?

I know silver long lasting but it's very boring and I always own dark color items rather than light color.

Not something that can be easily wipe off using tissue since the surface is not the smooth type, but with wet cloth it should be able to clean it up easily.
Bu treally depends tho, I am not a clean freak hence it doesn't bother me. Looks pretty for first few years can already.

To be honest, MacBooks suck at gaming.

They are really not made for gaming. But are more capable in graphic processing than many high end windows gaming laptops.

I think Apple will only focus on gaming when cloud gaming becomes more mainstream. Apple doesn’t sell one device which can do everything, so it’ll probably sell you another device which is specifically made for gaming in the future.

Mac is not the answer if your device is laggy after a year. You need to check why your device is laggy - is it because not enough physical resources? Or software/malware issue?
I own both Mac and Windows and each has their strength and weakness.

My advice is not to upgrade. M1 to M2 for your usage is really unnoticeable, especially if comparing at the base models. Unless you really like the design changes.

I'd suggest you to skip this gen of M2 MBA first. Not so noticeable and also not significantly better as well. Like iphone 12 -> Iphone 13,

If budget is an issue for you, go with the M1 MBA. It is plenty for word processing and research work (internet browsing, productivity tools and others). Only consider the M2 if you have the budget and do consider getting at least 16GB of unified memory and at least 512Gb of storage.

Very nice, the only thing that I like about the new M2 MBA is the entire change in design, from the extra power port (Magsafe) and the slightly larger screen with a better webcam.

Macbooks are non upgradeable. So you need to buy the spec you want from the start. Most likely need to customize online apple store for 16gb ram. Retail mostly selling base 8gb ram/256gb ssd or 512gb ssd.

No. RAM, ssd and basically everything else is soldered onto the motherboard. Not just plug and play.

I’m sure someone out there can add ram for you in the future by reconfiguring the MB but not for now, especially when it is under warranty.

And to answer your question, NO. They don’t sell any other specs other than the 2 pre configured specs in retail shops (Switch or Machines). Can only get it online and it is shipped from China.

I got 16GB.

I use mostly for browsing (safari and Chrome), Some Microsoft office work, watching youtube, and downloading stuff.

On normal usage, I can already use about 9GB of RAM. It just shows that if you have more RAM, MacOS can definitely make use of it.

No, you need to learn a couple of things. Apple's current set of Apple Silicon doesn't use the traditional RAM but rather unified memory that is fabricated as part of the whole SOC. Hence, you would need to specify it at time of order. If you go to places like Mac Studio or certain shops, they can order it for you and then you just pay them at the counter. I know some other places, they just say order online. Now, for the older Macs, Apple has been a PITA as well because they soldered the RAM directly on the board and it isn't slotted in as per what you might think with traditional laptops.

I have a MBP M1 with 8Gb from the office. Because of all of the additional software installed, from endpoint protection to numerous background services, 8Gb tends to slow down a lot and the laptop tends to utilize up to 90% of memory most of the time. I would sincerely recommend for 16Gb.

Unfortunately that isn't available here in Malaysia but if you are in Singapore or another location where there is AppleCare+, that comes in either 1 year or 3 years.

I would suggest you to choose MacCity if available, visit them few times and they are fast ! Even able to help me few times with some out of warranty device (Of caused, still need to argue with Applecare agent).

Bad experience with Machines ‘s service center btw, not helpful + very slow process. (My own experience lah)

need some opinion from pros here, I am an project planner, so I cannot decide between this

macbook air M1 with 16GB 256gb ssd

or

macbook air M2 with 8GB 256gb ssd

my usage is alot on portability and i regularly needing to open illustrator to review the project work. Sometimes the PDF with lots of layer to open the architecture floor plans. Do we still choose the macbooks with high ram now or actually 8GB is sufficient? Also sometimes need to open adobe premier to review the videos created for the building promotional video.

If me I still go for M2, the better display, better camera, MacSafe charging n newer built n sound system make up for all the Hoo-ha of 256GB SSD limitation. Plus it’s very unlikely SSD swap will occur. N you probably get longer MacOS update compare to M1 model.

Placed order on 24th July 2022 and it was delivered on 2nd August 2022. The shipping was surprisingly fast and earlier than the expected delivery date rclxms.gif

I've bought the 8-Core CPU, 10-Core GPU, 512GB SSD and upgraded the Unified Memory to 16GB. I only started using it for about a week because I was hospitalised and needs to undergo surgery sweat.gif

After a week of usage, I'm very satisfied with the performance. I upgraded the memory to 16GB because most of the time I need to run Parallels Desktop for my work so most of the time I run both macOS and Windows at the same time.

I don't feel any heat at all even I'm working from home without turning on air condition, the MacBook Air M2 doesn't feels hot or even warm at all and the best part because there's no fan in it, it's just complete silence thumbup.gif

My last MacBook was the MacBook Air 13-inch dated back in 2015 with i7 processor, 256GB SSD and 8GB memory. Decided to purchase and upgrade to the new M2 because lately most of the applications and OS needed more resources in order to perform and my old MacBook Air keeps giving me the 'colour wheel' issue which kinda frustrated me. Not to mentioned it gets heated up most of the time and kinda hot to touch it.

I'm very happy with the new MacBook Air M2 and I've got no complain at all. Although it's a bit pricey after upgrading the memory but I think it worth it and hopefully it can last me about 7 to 8 years like my previous MacBook Air happy.gif

I've bought the space grey colour. Went to see the the Midnight colour at Machines but doesn't come to my liking and Starlight is too striking for me rolleyes.gif

Hope you guys are loving the new MacBook Air M2 like I do wub.gif

That's a really tough decision to make, the m2 is better in everything but the 16gb is a deal breaker especially you'd need it for the type of work you're doing... I would still take the m2 though, as I think it will support you well enough for now (not sure about later when if you require more ram for heavier tasks), aside from other stuffs, hopefully the m2 make it up for the lower ram..

Anyone have any experience of purchasing customise MacBook from switch retailer? I have ordered a MacBook Air m2 16gb ram from them because they provide instalment option, but I didn't get any ETA updates or tracking to my order, but I believe they are doing the same things as making order from the apple official website, so I think the ETA might almost the same with the one that official website shown?

yes they do, but i would 100% recommend buying from apple's website if you are not in a rush to get it, due to their perfect after sales service, 1 to 1 exchange and etc. for example, if your unit has a scratch on it, you can immediately get it changed from apple, if you buy it from Switch, they will mostly decline such cases (they will blame it on the consumer wear and tear issue).

Yup I’ve check with Switch and Machines, but only Switch are providing this service so I decided to make order from them since only based model are available in store. But I just curious whether it really needs 1 or 1.5 month to delivered to me since I assume they are making order through the official website also (maybe with a special retailer account?) , so wanna check if anyone have the same experience since I don’t think I could take so long to arrived.

I think maybe like you said, they need to use a special retailer account or maybe needs to go through some internal processes that's why it takes about 1 or 1.5 month.

I ordered my custom unit directly from Apple and received it in less than 2 weeks rclxms.gif

I didn't get any case because someone told me that if you use a casing to cover your MacBook, it might affect the cooling and it might get more heated. I'm not really sure since I didn't get a casing to try it myself sweat.gif

I got myself a Razer sleeve to cover it only when I'm on the move sweat.gif

I didn't get any case because someone told me that if you use a casing to cover your MacBook, it might affect the cooling and it might get more heated. I'm not really sure since I didn't get a casing to try it myself sweat.gif

I got myself a Razer sleeve to cover it only when I'm on the move sweat.gif
*
Yeah. Agreed. Indeed casing is totally not needed for MacBook. Sleeve is really a better option on the go.

Temperatures are normal with no heating issues. Though, I am not doing intense workloads.

I prefer no cases too but I want to keep it pristine cause I might be careless

yes it does, best to use as it is without any casing etc, i see my colleagues mbp14" casing causes scratches and etc, worse is the thermal (it gets heat up easier than without case)...at best i think a keyboard protector is fine (although not recommended too)..

From what I've read in some older MacBooks, when a keyboard protector was used it caused the screen to crack as the clearance between keyboard and screen is very minimal when it is closed.

So something to carefully consider.

Go with brand like dbrand.
Used before and remove without any glue residue left over.

Which razer sleeve did you get? the sleeve v2 13.3 inches? Apparently the Razer sleeve v2 13.3 sleeve cannot fit the macbook air m2 as the screen size is 13.6.

haha actually laptop sleeve will do.
Unless u always bring ur laptop here and there,
to customer site for troubleshooting,
put on floor or on top machines,
if not then laptop sleeve good enough.

I used keyboard cover for a week and eventually remove it... coz the typing feels off with it... but I'm sure it protects from dirt and oils etc... I recommend only put it on when you are using it.. and remove it before you close the lid..

*
Bro, your order arrived yet? I'm considering to order customised MacBook Air from Switch also. Just wondering how much time does it really takes to get the item haha

Nope, I haven’t received it yet. I’ve made my order on 1st of September and until now I haven’t received it. The Switch worker told me it could takes 5 to 6 weeks to deliver to me and I wonder why I take so long.it could be postpone because of the launching of Iphone14, really no idea.

I'm using the Razer Neoprene Sleeve V2 - For 13.3" Notebooks and there's quite plenty of space for the M2 MacBook Air as it doesn't really fit perfectly coz the MacBook tend to me slightly smaller ya.

I purchase it from Shopee, the link as below ya:-
https://shopee.com.my/Razer-Neoprene-Sleeve...7256.8110968035

Before I made the purchase, I clarify with Razer and when they told me that the sleeve fit then only I make the purchase.

Hey guyssssss, finally I got my 16Gb customized unit MacBook air m2, it really takes a month to get the laptop. As Switch said, they will make orders from the factory, gather all the stock together, and ship it to Malaysia, so it will take longer to deliver the laptop.
I've been using it to work for few days, and it's a superb laptop, and a good choice switching from my MacBook pro 2015. No regret!

Just got back my laptop from Machines Northpoint Service Centre today. They replaced the motherboard and trackpad.

Had an issue last month where my keyboard and trackpad were not functioning. Took them close to a month to repair it.

Not quite sure. But Machines took some time to repair as they didn't know which part was faulty.

I'm guessing it's just a one-off faulty track pad!

I've got a 8 core GPU version la, basically I just use it for data analysis use and doing graph something, it doesn't seem to need a 10-core ver. But definitely suggest getting the at least 16GB ram, opened around 10 google sheets can push it to 13GB ram usage.I can't imagine if using 8 GB ram can cause how many swap used. So far 256gb memory is enough for me, download big apps like Microsoft word excel and powerpoint which average took 1.5 GB each, having around 200GB left now.

Yeah definitely will go for 16gb and 512gb.
Just that 10 cores vs 8 cores price difference not by much.
so thinking should go for 10cores or 8 cores.

I think as long as you didnt do anything regarding visual, then nothing much different for you, maybe just save the money and upgrade the ram or memory. It's an air, think if you need strong power in visual like editing should just go for pro haha.

When you received back your laptop, Machines doesn't come out with a diagnostic report? sweat.gif

Ended the just replaced the trackpad for you or the whole unit?
*
They didn't provide me with a diagnostic report. I guess it's because it will only make them look bad. They replaced the mobo first and when that didn't work, only then they ordered a new trackpad and keyboard.

In the end, they only changed the trackpad and both the keyboard and trackpad worked.

I asked for a new unit but they said can't. Apple online also said can't as it has passed the 14 days return period.

Yeah definitely will go for 16gb and 512gb.
Just that 10 cores vs 8 cores price difference not by much.
so thinking should go for 10cores or 8 cores.
haha
*
I got the 8-cores, 512GB/16GB model.

For processor, really no difference with the 10-core model.

For ssd speed, I can't tell the difference but the bigger internal space is useful.

For RAM, 16GB really does make a difference. My laptop uses about 10-11GB RAM max on heavy loads and idles at about 7-8GB RAM when left on for a few hours/days and with light usage. So. YES. MacOS really can take advantage of the extra RAM.

I’ll go for the M1. With 16/512, your storage space will not be under pressure.

More Ram and Storage is nice.. Ram itself already boost the performance. M1 is still very capable today.

I'm using a 2018 MBP (4 thunderbolt ports) base model and now am thinking if I should upgrade to MBA M1 base model or MBA M2 base model.

I generally use my laptops for:
- run reports in Salesforce
- analyse data in Excel
- watch movies by attaching an HDMI cable to the TV
- may want to edit videos in the future (may or may not happen)

My problem with M1 now is the 2 thunderbolt ports. I've a mechanical keyboard that requires an extra port (the other 2 would be connected to a TV and a charger).
I like the larger touchID button in M2; but kinda dislike that they moved the speakers away from the sides.

Any advice?

depend on your budget. one 5k, one 4k. my 2017 mbp still running fine and cannot find any reason to change. Ventura update still supported. I just wait for next year M3 model
MBA m2 base model has slower ssd speed. so u will end up upgrade till almost 6k.
MBA has lesser port compare to MBP.

same. also on 2017 MBP 4 thunderbolt.

no reason to change also...

seriously unless weight is a concern. 14-inch MBP based model is a better with 512gb ssd + 16gb ram.

My MBP has that flashing/flickering touch bar issue which can't be solved unless I pay 2k to change the keyboard.
I would have been eligible for the keyboard service program had I not dropped the laptop and voided that warranty. sad.gif

The other reason is I need to lower my taxable income.

i dun have touch bar issue, and i do not have keyboard issues. i had changed a total of 2 times keyboard using the program but not becos of keyboard issue but due to battery bloated. so it is considered very worth it since the two times replacement is free. the battery and keyboard are together, so replacing battery also replacing the keyboard.

if not becos of the keyboard program, i need to pay the 2 x fee for battery replacement.

i only have a screen flickering issue but after i reflash the macOS at apple back to the original version, it is fixed.

MBP M2 8/512GB currently a bit cheaper than MBA M2. Should i go for mbp or topup a bit for mba?

Mainly using for office, canva, a bit photoshop and lightroom.

Hearsay the 15" M3 MBA is coming
estimate damage RM8-9k

Usually WWDC will not release new model, they focus on operating system
But still the macs need some upgrade, especially the iMac
Im eyeing on iMac or larger screen MBA

I think it will probably fall around the RM6-8k range as RM8-9k range is MacBook Pro M2 range already.

Outlet name?

Thanks.

5499 is the RRP, you can get it from any resellers, I think most of them have plenty of stocks now..or wait for 5.5 not sure if there’s any upcoming promos..

Enjoying my m2 right now. Mostly using for office/productivity and content consumption so definitely OP. Enjoying the good battery life. Sometimes feel it’s too thin… worry a little fragile..hahah. Not using with any case though..nekkid only.

I’m considering this between the 13 inch pro p,since 14 inch one is way too expensive.
Any issues with heat ah?since they don’t operate with fan, and I’m not in air one room 24hours/7.

13 inch pro design quite dated dy leh, if u can look pass that thick bezels and that touch strip that replaced the FN keys, then the macbook pro 13 is a good choice over the more expensive pro 14 if you want a laptop with fan. However, My personal opinion is either go for the macbook air 2 or straight to the pro 14. I cannot accept buying a sub 6k laptop with 2020 (or earlier) design.

No issue so far regarding the fanless design, tho i would recommend to go for 16gm ram tho if u use multiple apps at one time. In conclusion, if ada bajet and ur consumption is high, go for pro 14. if u like me and use the laptop for microsoft office, safari, whatsapp web and basic apps, the macbook air 2 is just fine.

I think I’m like you, I am mainly just using it for personal consumption. But you know la, we are at tropical country, super hard to accept the device without fans ler. I mean looks at windows laptop, even with so many fans, the main breakdown reason is usually due to heat. Hahah! And I don’t use it in ac room. sad.gif

You are right about the dated design, that’s why I’m considering my option.

Cannot compare windows laptops with macbook le, the arm based chips tend to produce less heat compared to intel and amd.

I think can pass the 13 pro la.. too old. Im using just productivity apps eg cloud/ms 365..youtube, browsing. Very light photo editing on LR, no issue with heat. Back to back batch process hdr etc prob will heat up a little. mine is on a laptop cooler, i think it helps to dissipate some heat. Im not in aircond room too, just fan mostly.

You are both talking about MacBook Air M2 right? Seriously no heat issues y’a? I’m considering MacBook 13 because of the fan, but 14” one is way too expensive for me to stomach especially I don’t even use it for any rendering work. Just wanna watch shows and surfing….. I think MacBook Air seems like the best choice for me. I guess if I use a fan blowing at it, should be ok? Lol.

if u just surfing and watch movies/YouTube, then the MBA M1 is enough for u. Actually the MBA M2 and M1 performance is quite similar, u pay more $$$ for the MBA M2 new design only which I think it's not worth it.

Either u buy MBA M1 or wait for the MBA M3, the MBA M2 is just not worth in anyway.

I don’t have a laptop now except work one so I need one soon. So I really don’t want to wait for the next one, technology is always changing anyways, how do you expect to chase every single version? at that rate might as well wait for m3, m4, m5…

Also how long does the update support for each device? I assume that M1 Air will have only 4-5 years lifespan left?

Yup M2 MBAir. Very happy with it so far. It's very efficient, hardly even heat up for normal office productivity tasks, browsing, content consumption and sips the battery. Even if you want to do some light photo editing shouldnt be a problem. I think there are a few comparisons on youtube 13 pro vs 13 air, the fans are mostly useful for sustained loads eg rendering big files.

I bought 16gb 512gb because i intend to keep this for a while. 8gb is enough. But M2 air with 256gb has the slower SSD compared to previous M1 256gb because using "single channel" ssd vs dual 128gb on M1. In real life you wont notice it, only when rendering/transferring big files.

I am using M2 512GB with upgraded RAM to 16GB.

Using it for work and productivity like emails, excel, word, PowerPoint sometimes YouTube and browsing on both Safari and Chrome.

Will run Parallel Desktop on Windows 11 and running macOS at the same time because some office task that I do needs to run in Windows OS.

I've been working from home since last year and I didn't on air condition in my living room and so far my M2 are fine. Don't even feel any heat at all.

Mild warm maybe yes but really barely feel it and won't makes your finger or palm discomfort, but for sure the weather these fews days are much much hotter than my M2. laugh.gif

Hi all,

I plan on buying my wife a new MacBook air to replace her very old (10 years I think) MacBook pro.

Some questions?
- Should I get Apple Care or Machines punya warranty?
- My wife is a teacher. Is the education discount is significant kalau beli from Apple directly online? I nak check but they asked me to be verified first as teacher lol.

For edu you need to have unidays account now..so check if your wife’s school/uni is listed in the unidays list or not..if dont have then she can register then by using her work email ( the .edu email) + upload her work ID.

What do you mean by "slow"? 35W is the power needed for the MBA to run, you don't need bigger wattage power adapter.
