256 is enough for normal user. but the review from reviewer on m2 seem talking about performance issue when run out of ram and use swap file, then bad performance.
been running 8GB and 256GB SSD-MBP 2017 , so far did not encounter issue .
some reviewer also say 16GB encounter out of memory before.

Dun think the arguments are really true. They are making a lot of extreme usage on it to ‘justify’ the slowness. For real world user usage dun think it will be a big prob.

Apple ssd is usually a lot faster than competitor one and it is way faster than any external ssd u can find now too. If one is talking about they can use external ssd without going for higher storage option for their MacBook such as 512Gb and above, they can certainly survive with the base ssd speed.

But of course if one is really concern about the ssd, just go for 512gb for piece of mind.

This is bad news for those getting the 256GB M2 MBA. Not acceptable since it’s more expensive than 256GB M1 MBA and the SSD speed is much slower.

And yes, it’s true that the Apple Silicon architecture uses up a lot of swap file from the SSD itself (part of why it is snappy), so the slower SSD speed would be quite apparent especially if the RAM hardware is limited too.

And agree with westlife, if one were to top up to 512GB SSD for MBA M2 (which has similar fast SSD speed with the 256GB MBA M1), might as well just add a little more to get the 14” MBP.

Is ok to purchase the base modal if you are a light and casual user. Sometimes just doesn’t understand about all these paranoid with abit slower SSD. If really slower few second compare with the Macbook Air M1 does it really ruin our live and time?

8GB ram not enuf, it will take swap file from ssd. so faster ssd, better performance.

But upgrading the RAM on order is a smarter use of money. RAM can never be replaced. SSD just use external also can.

Light and casual user is fine to get 8gb

16gb is to future proof but u need to live with the fact that u wasted money for the expensive upgrade if u nvr gonna utilise that much

So basically depends on FOMO then …

And because for base model with only 8GB RAM, the SSD is used as swap memory.

When multitasking - multiple tabs open in browser, Spotify, WhatsApp, outlook all running at the same time… I *believe* the base MBA M2 will be slower than the base MBA M1 in actual real world use, not just benchmark.

Should I cancel my order for the base model with upgraded RAM (16GB) and upgrade to the 512GB model?

I don’t do any sort of editing. Will mostly be using it for MS Office, PDF, torrenting and lots of web browsing. I guess I’ll stick to 256GB and 16GB RAM.

Upgrading to 512GB SSD and 16GB RAM brings it scarily close to MBP 14 price.

I can’t find a reason to do so.

Actually me just go with the base model and I’m just a casual user. Hopefully is fine and not as bad as all the youtuber reviews it.
