Sources at motherboard vendors tell that by Q1 2009, the Core 2 Extreme QX9770 and QX9650 discontinue, with PDNs being issued. They will be totally phased-out by Q2. The company will also send out PDNs for four quad-core CPUs including the Core 2 Quad Q9450, ten dual-core CPUs including the Core 2 Duo E8300, three Pentium CPUs including the Pentium E2220 and the Celeron E1200 starting in November, and all products will phase out between the first and second quarters next year. Other highlights include:

On October 19, Core 2 Quad Q8200, Q6600, Core 2 Duo E7300, and Pentium E2220 and E2200 will face price-cuts.
On the same day, Intel Core 2 Duo E7400 launches, priced at US$133 (in 1000 unit tray quantities).
On November 30, Intel will launch Core 2 Quad Q8300 (2.50 GHz, 2+2 MB L2 cache, priced at $224), Pentium E5300 (2.60 GHz, 2 MB L2 cache, priced at $86) and Celeron E1500 (2.20 GHz, 512 KB L2, priced at $53)
January 18, 2009 will see the launch of Core 2 Duo E7500 (2.93 GHz, priced at $133 to replace E7400).
On the same day, Q8200 gets price cuts from $193 to $183,Pentium E5200 from $84 to $76, Pentium E2220 from $84 to $64 and Celeron E1400 from $54 to $43.
Another important bit is that Core i7 series processors and X58 based motherboards would launch officially in November. The CPU lineup is expected to expand in 2009.

Intel to Cut Prices on Existing CPUs and Introduce New Parts in Q3
Two things that drive the CPU world are price and performance. Depending on the needs of the consumer one or the other of these two factors is the main driver behind what processor is purchased. For many AMD CPUs the only place they compete currently in on price and Intel is starting to whittle away at the price difference.

Recent roadmaps reveal the company has another cut coming in Q3 2008. Simultaneously, Intel will release new quad-core and dual-core processors. This includes the 3.0 GHz Core 2 Quad Q9650 with a price of $530 in 1000 unit trays. The current Core 2 Quad Q9550 will get a significant price cut from its current $530 to $316.

A few of the older Intel CPUs will be phased out including the Core 2 Quad 9450. The 9450 will be replaced with the Core 2 Quad running at 2.66GHz at $266. Other quad-core processors being phased out include the Q9300 and Q6700 leaving the Q6600 as the only 65nm Intel CPU on the market selling for $203.

Intel will also make some changes in its dual-core lineup. The company will announce its Core 2 Duo E8600 3.33 GHz processor for $266, and discontinue the Core 2 Duo E8300. The E8500 and E8400 dual-core parts will drop to $183 and $163 respectively. A new entry-level Core 2 Duo part will debut called the E7300 running 2.66GHz for $133. The existing E7200 will get a price reduction to $113.

The performance/price sweet spot is Q9450,with 12 Mb cache!

It is almost certain that US dollar will continue to weaken for next 1 year against Ringgit (and most Asian currencies). If in early next year, 1 USD exchanges for 3.3 Ringgit, we can get Q9450 around 3.3 x 316 = 1043 ringggit.

I think you have to factor in the price of the Q6600 and the performance difference of the Yorkfield (penryn quad) vs the Q6600. If the price of the Q6600 drops a lot but the performance differences are not that much, maybe it is better to get the Q6600. Of course, if you have the $$$, then the best is for you.

Case in point - the Wolfdale (penryn dualcore) is, clock-for-clock, on average 5-10% faster than current C2D..... Of course, have to wait a proper review when the procs comes out

We should wait until the US Dollar get weaken and many of the future stuff will be reduced and dont forget we dont have to follow the US price quote processor we should follow Our Malaysia Intel and Amd factory price this is where all the retail getting the Intel and Amd Proc they use US Dollar price just to cover the more profit they'll be getting  sweat.gif

And remember if the Proc price slash down then u go to lyp shop then they claim they losing a big time biggrin.gif Just walk away and laugh biggrin.gif
*
1. I think these are bulk prices: meaning you get this price if you buy 1000 units.
2. There is no Malaysia price. All the processors assembled here are shipped out to the US and then a portion are shipped back here to Malaysia.
Journey of my C2D proc: PG, Malaysia -> Kentucky -> Chicago -> Sepang -> PG -> me. And I am getting it straight from the source.

Haha Intel dont do it like that lah doh.gif  they might end up losing alot of money shipping it back to Malaysia in business they want minimize loss  that why Intel build factory at Malaysia,China and other underdeveloped country

why they dont do that
1)They already losing USD 500 million last time sweat.gif if USD 500million loss is like rm500 can u donate some to me sweat.gif

Sad to say you're misled.....there's no fab plant in msia and all silicons are fab offshore. Packaging is done in Msia and shipped off for distribution.

Good news...dunno the price for C2D will drop or not at that time...if yes, then I can grab one for a cheaper price...but I think now Intel very clever...they will stop production for old processor and keep on out with new processor...then the price won't affect much...then they earn all the money...anyway...that just my guess only...dun flame me o... tongue.gif

there will be X38 supporting D2 and D3, just matter of soon or later ...

from the new price released seems like the old batch of C2D probably would be hold up for package deal ...

shops that got lots of stock of old C2D really scratching the head right now ...

it's so darn cheap for the new Q and E releases... hope to get one soon ...

DDR3 price still extremely expensive at the moment. Maybe it will takes several month for the drop. Thus hopefully penryn will make the DDR3 price drop.

intel penryn is the true quad...the c2q n c2e u seen now is just combining 2 c2d chip only...ex. q6600 is the combo of 2 e6600 chip if i not mistaken laugh.gif

Now, just when i am looking into C2Q, these prices come out.Hmm..I should wait a while longer i guess..

Time to save up for these new babies. Mind me asking, what does the Q9300 have in advantage over the Q6600?

No advantages except for its FSB1333 proc compared to Q6600. Q9300 has lower multiplier of 7.5x max, and less cache of 2MB, same TDP for both.

Ok, thanks for the clarification over there. Then, mind me asking another nooby question. What does FSB1333 have in advantage over the lower ones?

In that case, IF the price for the Q6600 would drop when the Q9300 was launched, wouldnt the Q6600 still be a good buy?

Q6660 can be faster due to the extra 2MB cache, but its 45nm vs 65nm, so still hard to justify. No one knows for sure until products are released. Just that with 7.5x, you will need even higher FSB to reach high speed compared to Q6600's 9x. Need 600FSB to reach 4.5Ghz for Q9300.

By the look at the price after conversion, it should be roughly around RM900+. Now, thats a nice price..

With the Q6600 now in the same price range, when the Q9300 arrives, its should be dropping hard..I will have a tough time making a decision by than.. rclxub.gif

Depends on when you want to upgrade. Cause by the time Q9XXX released, its January and Q6600 price would have already dropped as well. Expect more graphic card models to be released during winter.

If mid range user, wouldn't it be better to get a higher clocked dual core instead of slower quad core? You're unlikely to max out four cores also.

Really no reason to get amd with such prices.

Newer games will utilize more cores like Crysis. So having a quad core do has it advantageous, and it's more future proof as well.

But any upgrade would prolly cost 2.5K for a decent mobo/ddr3 to go with the Q9XXX series anyway... maybe Q6600+P35 mobo can last me another, 12 months at most before itchy fingers again.

Not yet. They like to play catch with AMD. I think maybe after the native triple core AMD comes out than we will see native quad core Intel. smile.gif i will wait until quad core becomes standard than i buy one. Rm900 still expensive for me, wait until the price comes down to lower rm600. I need to wait half a year, but its ok. thumbup.gif

Hmmm.... looks like our hopes for cheaper quads are not going to happen in the near future. Probably because Intel is comfortable at the top.....

Here comes a nightmare for you all.

Intel to up 45nm Core 2 Extreme prices by 50% next year

Reghardware.com reports that the upcoming 'Penryn'-based 45nm high-end quad-core CPUs may well attract an even higher price premium than before, it has emerged. INTC has apparently informed customers that next year's Core 2 Extreme processors will cost up to 50% more than today's models. According to newly released Penryn pricing data posted by a number of websites, Nov's Core 2 Extreme QX9650 will cost $999 when sold in batches of 1000 chips. That's the price point Intel has maintained for the Extreme line of gaming processors since the family was introduced back in the Pentium D days. However, 1Q08 will see the 3GHz, 12MB L2, 1333MHz FSB chip joined by two 3.2GHz models: the QX9770 and the QX9775, priced at a staggering $1399 and $1499, respectively.

If P35 can't support, we would need to buy x38 mobos which will cost a bomb to our wallet.

From what I found, P35 will support 45nm processors. Examples: -- GIGABYTE -- Optimized Performance for New 45nm Processors and ASUS Motherboards Support 45nm Next-Generation Processors icon_rolleyes.gif

Difference wise, compared to P35, the X38 has dual PCIe 16x for CrossFire (or SLI if rumors are true). The only ones that may need X38 are those with 1600FSB. hmm.gif

The 1600FSB is eventually X48 chipset as intel would want to call it. Nothing change except the FSB rate.

totally crap... shakehead.gif will it be better if the price is expensive but the performance is low? there is nothing that the more expensive the better...should not judge like that...should judge whether it worth the money you pay for...of course if you have lot of money...you can buy the most expensive processor you want...no one will stop you... icon_rolleyes.gif laugh.gif whistling.gif

Nehalem processors will be rip for DDR3 memory... will be better to stick to DDR2 with Penryn. Current DDR3 prices are too high/not enough volume and timings or speeds are too low..

noob question here,

what kind of ram should we get to pair with the new quad core.

Is not going to be DDR3 right, it cost a bomb.

eh would wait and see on the overclockability of those procs

those who remember when the c2d came out
they were boasting that the x6800 on stock vcore can do 3.4-3.6ghz so easily
reality wasnt so true...

so will be on a wait and see position

yup,
P35,G31,G33 X38,N680i all support 45nm processor.

and one thing,i thought they user the new logo of Core 2 Extreme?why they still remain the same logo?

and bro cstkl1,remember,that might be true for very first batch, intel purposely make it highly overclockable, cause mostly first batch is for review purpose,so intel make them overclockable, then cheat us end user, after we got the second batch,it might be not as overclockable as the first bacth.

mostl processor u get the first batch is the BEST of the BEST. brows.gif

oh ya,i like teh max-orb look-a-like hsf of the extreme processor, too bad i retired liao cry.gif

time to sell q6600 lo lol..getting d new quad 2.66ghz...

i doubt it worth it.. except if u like to oc insanely.. u see.. eventhough it looks easy to oc till 4.5ghz, with not so hot temperature, but they still use high vcore.. and not everyone is dare enuff to do that.. so in tthe end we might see lots of yorkfield to float around 4.2ghz.. which is same like current G0 kentsfield can do with around 1.5vcore but with higher temp of coz..

but i'm pretty sure oc freak shud be damn happy with this yorkfield biggrin.gif

its very hard to say which is better dude. cool.gif penryn will come out in january while phenom and barcelona will come out around Q2.so my advice to you is just buy whatever you can afford now without worrying about the future chip because this *INTEL-IS-BETTER-THAN-AMD-&-AMD-LATER-IS-BETTER-THAN-INTEL* cycle will not stop until the day you leave the world. laugh.gif

haizzz. i think ill wait a bit longer when penryn comes out. ill wait for the price to drop a little. and to see how market condition is. if amd bring out products earlier, than intel has to slash its prices.

LOL...45nm and FSB1333 is very tempting indeed. Ahh..Still thinking whether i should get the E2140 first while waiting for the Q9450 to be released. Estimated date was 20th Jan but i guess waiting another 2 - 4 weeks for the price to stabilize would be a better choice. Meaning, its going to be in February before i get a complete rig..LOL.. tongue.gif

LOL..Same thing goes to me. Thinking of getting the G0 Q6600 rite now or really, take the risk of waiting for the Q9450 which might leave me rigless for almost 1 month..LOL..At first, i really thought of waiting for the Q9300 but that seems like a downgrade version of the Q6600 though..

In the same sense, it seems unwise to get a E2140 first cause thats gonna cost me another RM200 wasted..LOL..

Rigless? Then why not a 2nd-hand CPU e.g. E2160 @ E2140, then sell it later on. Probably will lose some money but these cheap procs won't drop that much. At least can have a rig while waiting.... smile.gif

Supposed to be USD 316. So that is about RM1000-1100. The Q6600 was supposed to be USD 266 (the price never changed), see how much it is selling for now.... smile.gif

Yup. The P35 and X38 chipsets are supposed to support penryn. Current P35 mobos would need a bios update though....

Bios update, means that you have to flash your bios to the latest one that supports penryn CPUs.

For example, my gigabyte P35-DS3's current F10 bios still doesn't support penryn CPUs yet. However, certain models of gigabyte mobo already has bios that support them. So just have to wait until a bios that supports penryn for you mobo comes out....

when penryn comes out, that Q9450, sure old quad will become cheaper..
so for those who are in a tight budget..just wait for price to drop a bit or grab 2nd hand proc..value for money.. smile.gif

Looking at the motherboard specs, can i be sure that IF it was labelled as 45nm Support, it means its penryn capable?

They are supposed to run penryn as long as the bios is up to date. However, previously, it was said that penryn requires 11.0 VRM specs mobo (whatever that means)......

Anyway, the only way to be sure is to test these procs on current 45nm-supported mobos.....

They are supposed to run penryn as long as the bios is up to date. However, previously, it was said that penryn requires 11.0  VRM specs mobo (whatever that means)......

Anyway, the only way to be sure is to test these procs on current 45nm-supported mobos.....

sorry a noob question here... how are those ppl who are having p35-ds3 now supposed to update the bios when they change to penryn? internet download patch or manually change settings in BIOS or something else?

As far as I know, you need a bios update. If you look at their current range of mobos, some of the updated bios(es) already support penryn while some still don't support them. I guess it takes time to release updated bios(es) for each mobo.....

Example here:
P35-DS3R has a bios that already supports penryn : http://www.giga-byte.com.my/Support/Mother...?ProductID=2626
P35-DS3, not yet sad.gif : http://www.giga-byte.com.my/Support/Mother...?ProductID=2627

Here's what the end of the review says:

While the bigger cache and SSE4 do not help any application, it is a huge step forward for Intel. Now you can use a quad-core and not have to worry about your electricity bill. If the cores are idle, they stay idle, and consume much less power than any Core2 so far. Even under load it does not use more energy than our E6700. In short, it's fast, it's cool and it's energy efficient.

For gamers and "normal" users a quad core simply won't provide any advantage compared to any dual-core CPU, but in the near future some games will make use of them; for example, Microsoft Flight Simulator X already does.

LOL..But for people like me, it would really be great to let the price stabilizes before purchasing. I do not like the way dealers jacked up the price when its just released and stocks are kinda limited..LOL.. smile.gif Anyway, 1 more month of waiting before its revealed...

Yeah, now thinking of whether to wait for penryn or go for the Q6600..... In that article, no definite release date, they stated that maybe it will be release in February or March, DEPENDING on the performance of AMD's CPU.....

intel's holding up from releasing the yorkfield probably due to AMD struggling with stupid Phenom.

it could also be due to the low yield, but the lack of competition allows intel to take their time.

i doubt that amd could do anything about their phenom, at least not wintin 2 to 3 months. how's their bug fixing coming along?

in my opinion intel should crush AMD right now, the oppoturnity has never been clearer

but then again they are also trying to sell their old stocks thus probably the yorkfield hold up... not to mention the latters lower yield...

but yes, i dont mind if AMD go bust... except that we wont see any other x86 chip designer anymore thus an intel monopoly. hail intel

but yes, i dont mind if AMD go bust... except that we wont see any other x86 chip designer anymore thus an intel monopoly. hail intel
*
Intel need AMD to stay in business to avoid any anti-trust lawsuit. At least, IBM won't allowed only one x86 company. That was back then lah when IBM choose intel x86 as their main vendor, iirc.

Yeah, now thinking of whether to wait for penryn or go for the Q6600..... In that article, no definite release date, they stated that maybe it will be release in February or March, DEPENDING on the performance of AMD's CPU.....
*
Well, the INDEFINITE release date is going to be killing. Really hope it will be here latest by March or else, i am dropping my plan on the Penryn.. sad.gif

Well, it might be an intelligent move by Intel for me. I mean, they could use the opportunity to really clear off all the 65nm processors out there in preparation for the Penryn. smile.gif

---------
Edited : Anyway, what is the difference between these 2 Penryn Model : E8200 & E8190? It looks like both of them are having the same spec, same price but different code.

its not like they used underhanded tactics to keep amd out of the competition, pending the rule where they strong armed pc manufacturers from using anything but their chips...

as for the phenom, amd had it coming, intel simply innovated. if antitrust law is gng to prosecute intel for amd's screw ups, the system is clearly broken. well the system isnt perfect but it isnt broken.. yet

who owns the x86 architechture? i know intel has the license to design/manufacture it and that amd's license would be revoked if it goes 6 foot under or acquired. if it is the latter's case, can you still blame intel for "monopolizing"?

Aiyo. Looks like no Q9450 for me before CNY then.

But it is a strategically smart move by Intel, as the Phenom looks like cannot even match the current 65nm C2D/C2Q. Plus AMD appears to have yield issue, not enough quantity for everyone.

I feel, there may be a possibility that Intel may lower the price of current 65nm C2Q to price competitive against Phenom 3x.

So we won't know what will be next until the release of Phenom 3x.

hm? when u said bug i thoguht u were refering to amd's phenom. is it anti competetive to delay a product if not because of a problem? like intel not releasing their newer penryns because they want to sell their old 65nm chips

Would there be a possibility Intel is using this "AMD can't compete with Intel and we are going to delay our 45nm" reason because there is bugs in the Penryn? Or maybe they could not produce enough to meet the demand of consumers?

me think it is really a bug that delayed intel .. because if I want to kill my competitor, i kill them when they're weak .. not much of a struggle .. ph34r.gif

besides ... intel will make more money if they launch it earlier due to more chip can be squeee into one fab.. no??

and i really would jump ship to intel in my next rig.. really damn frustrated with my 939 socket choice few years back, afraid amd will repeat the same BS again

Intel are capable of mass-production.

So the reason for the delays are either due to lack of competitions from AMD or just bugs problem tongue.gif

i don't think is due to the bug's problems. Intel can fix the bug through microcode.

Not all Penryn processor is going to affect the price of the Q6600. From the specs and retail price point given, the Q9450 should be the direct comparison between the 2. Thus, the release of the Q9450 is the one that will affect the price of the Q6600. However, with the news about the delay in the Q9450, i doubt you will be getting it any sooner and yet, any cheaper.. sad.gif

As said by Irenic in post above, yes, Phenom is out but the performance is not really up to standard as off yet. It might be slower than the Q6600 as well. 3 models from Penryn is delayed thus, we cant really judge what would be the price yet. As off now, best bet would be with the Q6600. I am kinda tired of the delays in Penryn already.. sweat.gif

Its official that Yorkfield (Penryn Quad Core) will be delayed due to no competition from AMD. How long the delay is anyone's guess. Probably February, probably longer. smile.gif

i wan to ask...will these new q9450 really can archive high fsb? current q6600 alot of them cant pass 500fsb and for q9450 is multi 8x which means it really need 500fsb to archive 4ghz...q6600 can be a bit easy due to its 9x multi...i just hope these new yorkies can hit higher fsb which is over 500 easy without hassle..i assume over 500fsb by aircooling tho for standard.

Q9450 is 12MB cache and 1333FSB FYI. And the performance difference is quite a gap. Q9450 is around RM1200. RM1800~RM2000 is Q9550.

Also, 45nm Penryn runs much cooler than current 65nm with much less vcore.

Was at LYP yesterday and today. Saw those babies around when i was asking for some certain products. The price was tempting at RM700+ and i almost couldn't resist myself purchasing one..LOL..

But at last i didnt, because i really wanted to wait for the Q9450. Stopped myself by buying the tiny lil E2140 instead..LOL..

Of special mention is the E8190 model which at its specifications meets E8200 but does not support the virtualization technology. In any case, the user won't be able to save: the prices recommended for E8190 and E8200 are the same and amount to ~$163

Here a review on motherboard compatibility with the penryn. A bit old but hope they update it soon : http://www.anandtech.com/mb/showdoc.aspx?i=3138&p=4

You can read from the first page, just showing a link for gigabyte mobos.... whistling.gif

Edit : Looks like Nvidia chipsets do support penryn? hmm.gif

Already checked my mobo (P35-DS3). No new bios update for penryn yet. vmad.gif However, some gigabyte mobo's bios can already support penryn e.g. P35-DS3R. And our forumer did test out the wolfdale with his P35-DS3L......

Hi - Have u tried the (beta/ alpha??) 1401 bios ? - should work on dual-core 45nm, no idea about yorkfield support though. Still awaiting my QX9650.

Link#2: http://users.pandora.be/OAP/Striker/1401.zip

There's hope even for Quad-core 45nm biggrin.gif

QUOTE
Nordic hardware has an interesting fact today. Retail quad-core Penryn support was suppose to be one of the great new things about the nForce 780i chipset, even though the support problems was due to the layout of the NVIDIA reference board and not the chipset itself. Since a few companies have their own layouts, like DFI and ASUS, they decided to get to work on the retail quad-core Penryn support with their nForce 680i boards. And they seem to have solved it.

Both DFI and ASUS have beta BIOSes with working retail Penryn support for their nForce 680i-based motherboards DFI LanParty UT NF680i SLI-T2R and ASUS Striker Extreme. It's unclear when these BIOSes will be available to the public, but it shouldn't take too long.

The Striker Extreme (& DFI 680i) does support 45nm proc: being not reference design, it could even support the yorkfields (quad-core). Just have to wait for them to release the bios:

Striker Extreme & QX9650 (tho' alpha bios atm only support @ stock settings):

Striker Extreme & Core 2 Quad Q9550:

Got news from ATE that prices "might" drop in a couple of weeks time for the Penryn. If the E8400 dropped to a good price, i might drop the idea of Q9450 and head towards the duallies...

Reviews out there are showing the E8400 to be going really good. So, i guess the only thing to do right now, is ready your money - and wait until its released. Lets hope the 45nm is really going good. I change a whole rig waiting for the 45nm. LOL...
