Job Title: Staff Engineer, Mobile
Job Description: Working closely with product managers to implement new product features for Android app
Age: 29
Years spent in the company: 5 years
Company: Fintech
Industry: IT
Tenure: Full-time permanent
Employment Level: senior level
Experience before joining (years): 1 year
Highest paper qualification/ education background: Degree
Location: KL
Average Working Hours Per Week (incl lunch hours): 45

Monetary Payout
Basic Salary + Fixed Allowance: RM13,000. Allowance RM325
Contractual Bonus (months): <= 1 month
Performance, Variable Bonus & Commissions (months): Increment 3-5% per year (hearsay from my colleague). Guess I'm the outlier, increment every >= 30% based on performance

Work Flexibility (where relevant) :
Work From Home Availability: 3 days office 2 days home
Annual Leaves: 15 days
Flexi Working Hours: Yes, as long as you complete your job

Benefits (where relevant) :
Health Benefits: Clinic outpatients but I have forgotten how much. Probably >=RM500
Transport Benefits: Included in the fixed allowance. 250
Mobile / Internet / Gadget Benefits: They provide a laptop for you to work, and an RM75 fixed allowance
Other Benefits: - RM250 a year on dental
Future Prospects (personal outlook) :
Current salary against peers in the industry: Guess I'm average within my circle and industry. But definitely has more upside
Growth prospects: Already plateaued in my current company, both in position and skills set.
Where I will go from here: Thinking of jumping ship now. So there were 2 offers to me, but I'm still thinking about which can propel me to the next level for growth (gaining valuable skills and knowledge, not so much monetary although its added bonus).

So seeking all the sifu-sifu here, have any suggestions or advice for me? Thanks in advance! 🙏

Offer 1:
- Career Growth: Still can climb the corporate ladder, but it’s challenging due to being a large MNC. Can work across different technical stacks, but I need to ensure it doesn’t affect my existing responsibilities.
- Work Culture: More stringent SOPs and an older workforce.
- Offer: Basic RM12,000/month
            1-month annual wage supplement
            Bonus: ~2 months (assumed)
            EPF: 15% employer contribution
- Work Arrangement: Hybrid (3 days in office at KLCC; may become 5 days/week).

[B]Offer 2
:
- Career Growth: Flat hierarchy; no corporate ladder. No promotion opportunities, just performance-based increments. No chance to work across different technical stacks because the company needs a senior backend to lead the team.
- Work Culture: Lax SOPs, younger and more energetic environment.
                       Offer: Basic RM14,000/month
                       Bonus: Maximum 1 month
                       EPF: 12% employer contribution
- Work Arrangement: Fully remote (office visits optional)
*
Why your offer is less than 10% increment than your current salary range? you need to better nego your salary or else they take advantage on you. Understand you prefer to career growth, but you need to take serious matter on your monetary value (based on your exp + skillset).

I'm not sure what's your career progression path but in my case its something like this:
Analyst -> Engineer -> Architect

Do your role have any certification you can take?
Exam is one good way to gain knowledge and show your employer you are ready to take additional responsibility
*
Are you a solution/data architect now? What will be expected pay range?

impressive and you are above average at least I would say, will go for offer 1 as you are at the age to grow/gain further. Look into annual package for both to compare side by side
*
Thanks! The annual packages for both sides are actually quite comparable, the difference here would be just the basic salary. bonus and employee benefits

Thanks for your advise. I actually tried to nego with them to match back with my previous basic salary. But unfortunately they can't do that. The reason they gave is this was the maximum basic that they can give + they have more employee benefits (Free one flight ticket annually, dependents can get 80-90% discounts on flight tickets, 20 days annual leave, 15% EPF, etc).

Honestly, to me, all the benefits sound amazing on paper, but I don't know will I really use them lol (especially the free flight ticket, as Im not the person that loves to travel outside of Malaysia)

Maybe the only most beneficial thing to me is their reputable name, which is good for my resume

Yes. I know personally people earning between 10K to 30K being a solution architect.
Never see any architect earning less than 5 figure before.
Those earning more than 20K usually have additional responsibility (e.g. managing a team, having functional report)

It depends on the type of company as well.
It'll be easier to obtain "pre-sales solution architect" title from smaller SI companies compared to MNC. << This also impact salary tongue.gif tongue.gif

Yep, getting 10k in sgd is like getting 15k in my.

Its not super hard but not too easy to reach either.

I also applied for years. But my lucky break is because i was internally transferred over to sg. In fact most of my friends who came over are internally transferred.

The big 4 do hire people who are not physically in sg. I have a couple friends in sg there, but their salary is around 6-7k range. A bit low for a senior position. They are in audit, not advisory.

No increment and bonus is really a big deal breaker. However considering that you can WFH it is not all bad. Where did you try looking for your next job? Have you tried Linkedin?

Where I will go from here : Either continue working overseas in Taiwan/other countries and jump to other MNC or relocate back to MY/SG.
How's the pay/benefits of similar role in Malaysia (Intel/Oppstar/Infinecs?) ? What about similar opportunity in Singapore?
My parents would prefer me to work closer to home but at this career stage, I would priorities career building. What's your thoughts?

It's tax season again, figured I should do another update:

Years spent in company : <2
Increment: 4%
Total pay before tax y.2024: ~NT$1.5 mil (~RM200k at current rate)

As of the current state, I would stay unless things changes back home. Even moving to Singapore would not result in a substantive gain factoring in the living costs.
The downsides are the Mandarin dominated environment, no EPF for 2 more years, and infrequent family visits.

Mind sharing more on why did you decide to go? My 20k should nett you 14.5k, and if you stay in KL, monthly expenses should be 4.5k. You should be able to save RM 9-10k while likely having a better quality of life. In SG you do save about double, but I believe that comes at slightly lower quality of life?

As someone who has been in Singapore for > 15 years and still pops back to Malaysia now and then, I wouldn’t say Singapore’s quality of life is lower. Malaysia’s got some cool perks... like way cheaper living costs (rent’s about 90% less than Singapore) and a chill vibe with awesome nature spots like rainforests and beaches. If you’re into outdoors more than city stuff like healthcare, safety, or infrastructure, Malaysia might feel better for you. But honestly, when you look at the big picture, Singapore’s got the upper hand with its top-notch safety, stability, and setup.

MY 20k nets me around 14k.
Condo was around 3.2k
Car was around 1.5k. (3 series second hand)
Other stuff comes in around 5-8k.
Every month i was saving 2-3k myr

SG 13.5k nets me around 12.5k (no cpf for ep holders)
Condo was 4.3k
No car, take mrt
Other expenses comes in at around 2k
Splurge on food comes in around 1k a month
I currently save about 3-5k a month (10-17k myr)

The only thing that really changes is that you gotta take the mrt.
Which i am ok with.

I find it hard to believe that you spend only SGD 2k to get what you spend RM 5k - 8k. There is certainly a lifestyle change. Plus, for Condo that you spend RM 3.2k here, that's should be quite a nice condo. You should be bale to downgrade to make things comparable with SG.

Plus, you get a BMW 3 series here. There are cheaper cars.

In MY my condo is a mortgage, which is a 2 bedder. I currently rent a 2 bedder here for 4.3k, which is close to the city and its much nicer condo than where i was living in MY.

Things here in SG is around 30% more than the price in MY. A whole roasted chicken in cold storage is $8.50, food around 8-12, if go hawker its 5-6 bucks.
Electric around 80, phone bill is 17 bucks. All these little things add up to quite a significant amount of savings.

To compare, in MY lunch is around rm15, zhapfan rm10-12, phone bill rm90. The only thing is really the car, i do miss driving around. Grab here is quite expensive, almost 1 to 1 price with kl

May I know since you work in Singapore as expatriate, do you manually perform adding your monthly salary percentage to your epf account? Do you also require to submit your income tax to LHDN every year?
