Got offer to join business development team, but would like to hear opinions from the crowd.

Working hours is by shift. Working 5 days a week. A lot of micromanagement since it is retail work. No flexibility at all i would say. Retail life is quite bad. Both, jump into the system architecture in your company, understand every integration and purposes (best if you could understand the purposes of every fields), this is important especially when you step into management board meetings, you will be the one that has a SAY besides director.

You need to understand that you are currently in a very good position, have the chance to meet and speak with management people which others don't, please make use of this chance and impression is very important. You doesn't need to be fluent in specific language but you must be committed to what you have agreed and presented.

For me, I started from investment banking, after get used to the investment platform, I extend my knowledge to core banking which I would have exposure on CASA, FD, Cards etc products (including insurance), and there's where I started to take bigger responsibility and important role wink.gif Maintain good relationship with my GMD, MD, C levels and ground level staff, I have been so many taichi experience with these fella. Find your way to overcome this. Project management isn't rocket science, main issue is people biggrin.gif

With above effort and opportunity, I managed to get such hike in terms of salary, position, and exposure.

Hope it helps

Thanks for sharing. Although it might be a contradiction but I actually don't like to deal with people and that is why I mostly go for technical path albeit I know at most point of the time, there is no way to avoid interacting with others..whether developers, stakeholders and managements. I just can't blow water as fluent as those managers that I know.

At the moment, I can see my next growth is to become an enterprise or data architect but I don't know what's beyond that.

Hi all, I would like to hear some opinion/advice here especially from the high achievers in IT industry.

I'm currently taking around 20k as a senior architect in a MNC. The job and company is good but I feel like there's not much progress for the past few years. I used to be very motivated to climb the corporate ladder but lately I feel like I'm burning out. I also tried to start some businesses but not really doing well, I failed a few attempts and my current one is only getting 1-2k profits per month.

Should I continue to climb higher in the corporate or focus on building up my business? What is the salary ceiling for a solution architect in Malaysia?

Thanks in advance.

Being a solution architect myself and looking at resumes for architect I would say the ceiling is around 25k. Anything beyond that will require you to lead a team or being the HoD for architect department. Again, that is roughly the price based on what I observed over the past 6 years. There are a few different scenarios too:

- commission if you are able to sell a solution
- if you are an expat
- super high achievers

I assume you don’t do software development? Are you more of a solution architect?

Hi all, sharing my progression here as a dotnet software developer.
My background is not IT but I started my career in IT as a software developer.
I am a Mechanical Engineering degree graduate from TARUC (Setapak).

My monthly gross salary in RM (not including allowances, only base) progression:
2016 (started in Dec): 3K
2017: 3.3K (confirmation) -> 3.6K
2018: 3.8K -> 6K (promotion)
2019: 6.5K
2020: 6.7K -> 8.1K (new job)
2021: 10K (new job)
2022: 16K (new job)

Sorry for the soooo abstracted information, just in case my colleague will see my post here.
A bit more context, all these are in Malaysia, I'm not doing remote job and converting currency (some people like to convert, for example from SGD to MYR as their earning).

Sharing this for the benefits of other software developers, there are a few companies I know that they could afford RM 10K monthly for people who have less than 5 years of working experience.

The annual bonus I got from these companies is average 1.5 months.
I am grateful with what I have now at my current age (below 30 years old).

Hello all, would like to update again this year as I’ve gotten a new opportunity last month.

My monthly gross salary in RM (not including allowances, only base) progression:
2016 (started in Dec): 3K
2017: 3.3K (confirmation) -> 3.6K
2018: 3.8K -> 6K (promotion)
2019: 6.5K
2020: 6.7K -> 8.1K (new job)
2021: 10K (new job)
2022: 16K (new job)
2023: 18K -> 24K (new job)

Recently join an MNC at KLCC area, they are one of the top 10 players in their industry. The role is mostly in management with little to no technical implementation. Not sure I’ll like it but no harm trying.

Let’s see how. Will update again if any changes in the near future.

Is your role still the same in this most recent move? I would assume you will have to take up some leadership aka management role with that pay.

Hi, my role is different now, the previous role is more technical.
My current role is in different industry and at end-user side now. Mostly dealing with business users and clients.
