Pikes gearing calculation: [chainring size]÷[cog size]x[internal hub multiplier]x[1300 tire circumference]x[cadence rpm]x[0.00006 to km/h]
*Pikes SRF3 internal hub multipliers are [1.33/1/0.75]
*Brompton BWR internal hub multipliers are [1.57/1/0.64]

just want to share how to configure gearing for Pikes with SRF3 internal hub and 3 external cog setup.

1. Smallest cog must be 12T so that you have more flexible range in choosing chainring size and another 2 cogs.

2. The yellow column is the internal hub most efficient gearing cruising speed, so choose the chainring size (orange column) to match your stamina.
Lighter: 48T
Normal: 50T
Heavier: 52T

3. After decided the chainring size, your top speed is set too, refer to the red column. Of course if you can pedal faster the higher top speed you can get.

4. Now it's time to choose your largest cog for hill climb ability. You can choose from 17-21T.
You can refer to road bike gearing as a guidance.
For the green column value, here are some references for 700x25C road bike speed on 60rpm:
34T chainring 32T cog = 8.051625
34T chainring 30T cog = 8.5884
34T chainring 28T cog = 9.201857
36T chainring 32T cog = 8.52525
36T chainring 30T cog = 9.0936
36T chainring 28T cog = 9.743143
39T chainring 32T cog = 9.235688
39T chainring 30T cog = 9.8514
39T chainring 28T cog = 10.55507

5. After you decided your largest cog, then the middle cog you can choose
- either you want to have even gap in speed
- or you want closer ratio to your high speed gearing
- or you want closer ratio to your hill climb gearing

Happy tuning guys.
Btw, no one here own the latest 3x3 Pikes and share opinions?

err.. i dont have latest pikes, but my pikes and aceoffix is 3x3 setup

as for my pikes
53t with 13/15/19

my aceoffix
52t with 12/14/17

as u can see, both top speed nearly the same. but my pikes setup towards more on touring (mudguard), so i reserved 19t for big hilly route.

oh ya, tested my pikes on penang round island. amazingly, its enough (i also didnt use 15t, only 13t with lightest gearhub combo) but not tested on the new highest bridge.

in addition, last time my pikes setup is 52t wih 12/17. just nice for all terrain, but i hate those big gap. thats why i mod mine to 3x3 setup. for me close ratio on top speed is better + talian hayat cog

52T 12/14/17 more similar to 56T 13/15/19

this is what i want to highlight, instead of increasing chainring size, it's better to have 1 tooth smaller cog.

bigger chainring means need longer chain too.

user posted image

52t with 13/19 can be configured as 48t with 12/18

Pikes fold looks best when using 44-48t chainring where the chainring won't exceed the hinge after folded. (picture is 46t)

where did you get your dahon from?

I am not new to cycling, but am new to buying more "expensive" bikes.. only looking at foldables due to limited house storage. I am staying in a condo smile.gif

1-2k budget better get fnhon.

tern and dahon in this budget range u need to upgrade wheelset and groupset later.

just go to facebook marketplace and search "fnhon"

happy hunting.

if die die want dahon, check if any seller selling dahon k-one around 2k

if die die want dahon vybe d7, then buy it and hunt for used rim, rd, and shifter and upgrade to 9 or 11 speed.

Polygon Urbano 3 could be another option but i still don't recommend disc brake folding bike for recreational purpose. possible disc rub issue might drive u crazy.

hmm thank you for the advice. But i keep seeing advises about gears and it seems like having more gear speed the better? I am not taking the bike for up hill or mud road or rough terrain. Just leisure riding to keep fit. I need foldable due to storage concerns. I living in a condo hence limited space. Big, professional, or non foldable types are out for me. Will I need more gears than the 7 speed that the dahon n tern are offering? smile.gif

Pardon me. I used to ride my grandma's old bicycles (no gears but with a bell and a basket infront tongue.gif type) hence I am new to modern bikes with so many gears. laugh.gif smile.gif

the reason i highlight on gear was 7 speed wheelset mostly run on freewheel mechanism and 9 speed wheelset mostly run on freehub mechanism.

user posted image

with freehub mechanism you can replace the cassette so that you could configure your liking gear ratio. you hardly could do that on freewheel mechanism.
freewheel also always associated with "cheap" "not smooth" "heavy"

if you need compact folding size…have a look on dahon 16" or even 14" folding bike.

if storage space concern is a issue, buy a 3x3 Pikes will be a better choice as it could blend into condo space by storing it in a ikea kallax shelf. consider the extra cost for aesthetic purpose and to avoid wife nagging laugh.gif

if don't want store into shelf, and don't mind 3 gear, oyama s500 could blend into condo space too.

oh wow. thank you very much for the info plus photos. really appreciate it thumbup.gif smile.gif

the trifold ones are really great, can save so much space. but i wish to ask, where can i find those 16 inch dahon/tern? so far the ones i saw at the shops are all 20 inch. also will riding one 16 inch wheels be tougher than 20 inch? i am around 78kg and 1.75m. will the 16 inch be too small for me? smile.gif

the pikes and oyama while looks very very nice + 9 speed is abit out of my budget sad.gif

tern dont have 16 inch.
dahon k3 plus
dahon mu sl d9

dahon 16 inch is smaller than pikes 16 inch (you can assume the pikes as 17.8 inch)

1.75m ok for 16" Pikes with M riser bar.
if want more relax and upright riding position then no choice got to be 20", but dahon 16" with adjustable headpost is enough for 1.75m height.

remember when selecting wheel size, always follow the ETRTO size (the exact rim diameter not including tyre)

16 inch have 305 and 349
20 inch have 406 and 451

size big difference yo even both of them being called as 16 inch and 20 inch respectively.

ok so i have decided on a higher speed folding bike. you recommended fnhom 16 inch wheels. but i have looked around and it seems like fnhom bikes are sold part by part?

where can i get a fully built fnhom bike? i am really new to the world of bikes hence i have no idea on how to source nor choose the parts sweat.gif

go contact him, he is a trusted fnhon seller for long time already.

https://m.facebook.com/pay.guan

you can always hunt for a used bike in facebook marketplace.
many ppl bought during mco and now no longer interested to ride since already can pergi sini pergi sana, then they sell their bike at a cheaper price with still very nice condition. for 20" bike, i think quite easy to look for fnhon blast model. for 16" bike, i think mostly are fnhon gust, i would prefer fnhon zephyr more than gust due to the rear brake position.
better take non-disc brake version for easier maintenance.
