Guys,
I am having problem replying to individual postings... however..

March05:
18V regulated power supply is not a problem as most PSU (Power Supply Unit) kits are easy to assemble. 18V transformer is also available in Jalan Pasar(JP). How much (max) current do you need?

Those who wants to be guided (March05 & dgrebel) especially about kit building, sure I can give a pointer or two. And we can do this weekends or even weekday nites if time permits. Just drop a line here or PM me.

I need 2 amps max. But I also need it to be powered from a 12 volt Car Battery.....so it's a little bit more complicated. A transformer is out....I want to make it small and as compact as posible. Currently I'm using one of those notebook adapters (with variable output) bought from Pasar Road, but it's like overkill for my purpose.

Since you're using a notebook adaptor for the purpose, why not use those inverters meant for the car? 12 to 230Vac? then plug in your notebook adaptor... make life simpler... The cheapest I saw in JP is RM65. I got mine, small unit plug straight to the car cigarette lighter (120W max) from Bangkok for RM70. Can't find them here though biggrin.gif

Otherwise I am thinking of a DC to DC inverter.. 12 to 18 volts.. too much work tongue.gif

So far I have MadZiz calling me now and then, you might want to tag a long with him.

Before I continue further, my apologies to MadZiz for hijacking his thread and his siffoo.

I already own a 12VDV to 220VAC power inverter (from LYN), a 220VAC to variable 12VDC-24VDC adapter, and also a 12VDC to variable 15VDC-24VDC adapter! (both of the latter from JP) biggrin.gif
However, I would obviously prefer to have a small single box dedicated 12VDC to 18VDC adapter if possible.

For me, it won't be too much work learning to build a 12VDC - 18VDC inverter - the main thing I guess is to get the components, and the circuit diagram, then if you can tell me which side of the soldering iron to hold, I'm all ears to start..... The idea of the DIY is to keep my itchy fingers busy doing something productive. Otherwise they always get into trouble going where they are not supposed to. laugh.gif

And of course, to make some new friends like you & MadZiz. biggrin.gif Have met plenty of nice people here in LYN so far! BTW jazzy939, don't go out of the way for me, ok? Just mull over it, and if you think it's not worth the effort, it's fine.

Eh? So far only you la MadZiz... class now open for registration.. hahaha biggrin.gif

MadZiz, remember the 'newbie' headphone amplifier that I mentioned earlier?
I calculated the price for parts and stripboard will not exceed Rm10. Casing are extra..
Good for your next 'toy'.. I know you're itching to do more soldering biggrin.gif May be the others are interested in this?
Also don't forget the additional parts to complete your 9V regulated power supply.Thought you're going to Rising for the additional parts?

Did you enjoy reading the link I gave you?

Happy soldering tongue.gif

Okay. Now I have a clearer picture of what you want! biggrin.gif

Ok you want to learn basic skills of soldering. Nothing to it. Like MadZiz, after a few minutes with the soldering iron, he's doing fine and itching
to solder (almost) anything.. hahaha. rclxms.gif

Sure .. if you wanna join us.. we're having another meet up this afternoon/evening.. you wanna tag along? Give us a holler.

I'll search around for a 12VDC to 18 VDC inverter, unless you have one, let me have a look.

Everyone is welcome. Like MadZiz said, knowledge is to be shared and I like sharing what I know...

Added on September 1, 2007, 3:00 pmNothing specific actually.
MadZiz is learning to solder so, first project is a simple 9V regulated power supply.. which will be used for future projects.
March05 wants to build a 12Vdc to 18Vdc inverter.
I am trying to buildup the cheapest portable headphone amplifier for my 'trainees' to make before they jump to Cmoy or PIMETA (MAdZiz).. tongue.gif

My unfinished amp.. initially was trying to make a Cmoy.. but.. I found something easier/better..
This was done using a 'doughnut' board. My first attempt.. I don't like it. Prefer stripboards...

the birth of DIY junkies, yeaaaaa! Welcome to the clubzz thumbup.gif

I can get you guys good OPAMPS if you want, gimme sum lead time, i can supply OPA2227 and OPA2132, and also i haf lots of CHEAP spare of JRC opamps, all are dual opamps, so much easier to make CMOY using them.

Ehh... doesn't look any different from a CMoy laugh.gif . Non-inverting opamp gain stage

Good start, come read up and contribute in DIY Amp Club smile.gif

Thank you ijan.. I may take up the offer (opamps that is!)

Right now I am going into discretes... I have this 'thing' about discretes... not that I don't like opamps.. tongue.gif

Added on September 1, 2007, 9:44 pmHonestly it WAS a Cmoy! biggrin.gif
Then like I said... I was short of OPAMPS which JP(Jalan Pasar) did not have..
Still it is working as I dropped in a 'cheapo' opamp ripped from a soundcard. tongue.gif

Now I am working on something else... this 'cmoy' is just to break the ice as I stop this DIY thingy for
quite sometime....

Actually part of the reason I'm building the inverter is because I want to use it to power the Cmoy which Eokboy built for me. So maybe Eokboy can give some idea of a suitable 18V PS design?

Ah! Now I see it... but I thought Cmoy is powered by 2 9Vs? for a +9,0,-9 rail?

Eokboy, how?

u can still power it down to 9V, not many opamps require high voltage application. I made once a simple CMOY powered by a car's electrical system, hooked to an iPOD AUX-ed to the stereo, when the engine's running and the alternator kick in, theres a ringing noise due to the electrical system power ripples superceeding the power in the stereo itself.

By using the inverter>dc psu again u would be able to remove this noise, but they are FAR easier methods of doing werk. A tighter regulated psu can supply clean 12V from the car's electrical. 12v runs fine to power ur stock 18V amp, no problem.
