Yeah. I bought my MacBook Pro about three weeks ago, and now the new models are out. I admit I was a bit bitter when the news broke, but well, that's how life is, right?

And thanks, guys, for the answers I got to my Firefox-PDF question.

lazy to re-type again. yawn.gif

Penryn has SSE4. With SSE4, it can speed up the instruction application (40% faster according to macrumors speculation). Although the cache is lower compare to merom, but overall performance still faster than merom wink.gif
*
It will be true if the program you are using are program to capitalized the new instructions set. I think the processor performance will lose out to merom at same speed. That's a clear 25% reduction in L2 cache. 25% of L2 cache is significant. You really need application utilising SSE4 to compensate it. I'll give the credit to the heat reduction in Penryn though.

Why on earth Apple is using the lower end version of Penryn on this update? I'm disappointed. Pure marketing gimmick.

I'm still waiting for the benchmark on common application......but i have a hunch that this lower end version of penryn will lose to merom with the same processing speed.

I am planning to get a Apple Laptop ... but no idea which one is suitable for me ... I never use Mac before ... this is my first time ... please advice smile.gif

I am using it for surfing internet, office application and photo editing for Nikon D300. My maximum budget is RM8k.

The specification is below,

1. MacBook 13.3-inch, 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 3MB on-chip, 2GB DDR2 SDRAM, 160GB SATA hard disk

2. MacBook Air 13.3-inch, 1.8GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 4MB on-chip, 2GB DDR2 SDRAM, 80GB PATA hard disk

3. MacBook Pro 15-inch, 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 3MB on-chip, 2GB DDR2 SDRAM, 200GB SATA hard disk

Thanks in a million. smile.gif

Intel is planning to replace the Santa Rosa mobile platform with Montevina this June.
Read more HERE

That's the answer. My guess is probably santa rosa can't support the high end Penryn. High end Penryn should be 1066MHz FSB, whereas santa rosa platform only support max of 800MHz FSB.

I second your above post. But for normal users like us, I highly doubt we can "feel" the speed. The benchmark will have differences nod.gif

@clngu,
That sure is a lot of budget for a laptop *grins* Anyhow, do U plan for it to be mobile? Also, do take into consideration the additional ACPP which might cost between RM899 and RM1299 depending on which system u decide to get.

@almattitude_v1,
Apple won't be where they are today if they don't keep researching and coming up with new products! It's a computer my friend, and one certainly can't expect it's product life cycle to be 5 years! tongue.gif

Don't think too much about it, instead spend more time enjoying your Mac. You won't regret buying a Mac.

One thing about Apple is you don't really know when exactly they are updating their products, they are so secretive over their updates.

Initially I planning to get Sony/Fujitsu high-end Laptop ... some LYN members told me to get Mac Laptop. So I come here to seek for advice. I always bring my current Fujitsu Laptop with me, so it has to be mobile.

Do I need Apple Care Protection Plan for 3 years? Normally I just go for 1 year plan for my Fujitsu Laptop. Please advice.

@clngu,
If I'm not mistaken, when U compare the 3 (Fujitsu/Sony/Apple) the price is about the same, with Fujitsu giving u the least stuff *grins*

Now that U've decided to get a Mac [U won't regret it! I had the same brand list as U when I was gonna replace my old ancient Fujitsu and somehow ended up with a MBP], ask urself if u've a preference over screen size. If u want at least a 15.4" U haf no other choice besides the MBP - take note of the weight and see if they meet ur requirement.

As to ACPP - it's really for peace of mind and most of us here would recommend the additional investment to it. Also, all Fujitsu laptops now come with 3 year warranty.

PS: U don't need to buy the ACPP immediately - just get it before the 1st year warranty is up smile.gif

Thanks for your advice. I normally prefer 13.3-inch and below 2kg Laptop. It seem MacBook Pro is a wise choice, 15-inch and weight 2.45kg. I think I still can accept it but need go to the shop to test it.

Considering that you're using a D300, it seems like you're more towards the Prosumer end of the market spectrum.. I would not advise you to get the MacBook Air, as the hard disk is small and only runs at 4200rpm, you won't have much space to store your photos especially if you shoot in raw... With the OS, necessary applications, etc. you would only have about 50gigs of space left... The single USB port would also be a limitation if you decide to connect your Camera, external hard disk, and or superdrive simultaneously...

Considering your budget, I would actually recommend you to get the Black Macbook (which is not in either 3 of your choices)... With the Black MacBook, you'd get a 250gb hard disk, useful for all the photos that you might take.. Pricing for the new specs have yet to be announced, but it shouldn't be more than RM5459 (Price of the older spec MacBook Black).. Add in Applecare (RM899) and Office:Mac 2008 (RM619)... You'd still have about RM1000 more left to spend, you could use it to bump up your memory to 4GB (if necessary), get a nice camera+laptop backpack, mighty mouse, or whatever else you may fancy...

The only advantage of getting the MacBook Pro in your case would be its dedicated 256mb graphics card, extra screen real estate+led backlighting, extra ports, and multi-touch trackpad.. Add in AppleCare, Office and whatever else you may need, you will easily exceed your budget...

Yep! That's the thing or "beauty" of Apple laugh.gif

Anyway, usually mac machines update at Tues (US timezone).

This coming June will have something new. brows.gif Bigger update due to new chipset. New chipset, that's mean good for macbook cos' of a better integrated graphic.

Yes, I'm talking about that one... It's already released in the market, but for now afaik it has yet to reach Malaysian resellers.. If you're worried about having to wait, you will still have to wait for all of your 3 initial choices... #2 is a Configured To Order (CTO) specification, which means Malaysian resellers rarely stock up on this particular MacBook Air... #1 and #3 should arrive at the same time with the Black MacBook that I'm suggesting. This is just a rough estimate, but give it about 2 weeks for it to arrive. May arrive sooner, may arrive later.

Call up one of the resellers and register your interest. Get them to call you once the new MacBook/MacBook Pros arrive.

The bump will be a good one, FSB 800Mhz to 1066Mhz (rumoured based on Intel's roadmap)

All Penryn to date running at 1066MHz FSB including the one using in the new Macbook. Rumors have it that this lower end version of Penryn will be phased out by the start of next year.
