What are your inexpensive options when brown switches, even with O-rings, are still too loud for your liking?

Lubrication isn't cheap. Neither are specific silent/quiet switches. Especially so, when you are opting for a keyboard from the budget end of the scale like a Tecware Phantom or a Cooler Master CK350/CK550, and the value of doing so isn't there.

I know some people mention soft pads, but is that even available in Malaysia?
*
Unless your o rings are too thin, you are not looking at switch noise anymore IMO.

You might want to look into the acoustics of the case you are using. Maybe it is too hollow and would benefit to have some foam in it. And foam between PCB and plate is an awesome mod if you have the patience and dedication.

Where would you suggest I go look for thicker o-rings, preferably ones that are more translucent as well since the ones I have seem to somewhat mute the LED emanating from the keycaps as well? And also the foam. I know what they look like from Youtube, etc, but I don't see them on Lazada/Shopee.

Thanks.
*
I've bought o-rings that were not advertised for MKBs before that were too thin and did almost nothing for the feel/sound. If you bought something like this you should be fine.
https://shopee.com.my/O-Ring-Switch-Keyboar...1616.7122987078

Don't know about the transparency, I've never used them with any keyboard that had LEDs.

You can check the previous thread, pages 107-109, for my adventures in foaming.

Looks like you MacGyver-ed yours. I was looking for something like a China-brand of EliteKeyboard's Landing Pads.

Thanks again.
*
No problem. I had to Google what landing pads are. They replace O rings IMO and not case/PCB foam.

And MacGyvering IS the inexpensive option. Otherwise you'd get it from people like MKUltra.click

one more thing i'd like to confirm with soldering, How much temperature should i set the soldering iron at for soldering the switches with a 60/40 solder wire?
*
Those things don't have a sensor in them (open loop) so take the numbers with a pinch of salt. I'd try 300 and go higher only if it takes too long to melt the solder or too much time to recover between pins.

Hi,

I need a mechanical keyboard with numpad but don't want it to be full size as it will be heavy and difficult to move it around.

I found the Leopold FC980M seem to be a good form factor for me but was wondering where can I try them out.
Any shops selling them?
And do other brands carry such form / size?

Bcos Leopold is really expensive.
Wonder if they comes in 2nd hand.
*
The form factor you are looking at is called 1800. You can also have a look at 96% form factor. So maybe Google those two terms and see what catches your eye. Or maybe an external numpad?

you can try putting a small piece of fabric tape on the top part of both wire tips, then lube them with plastic-safe grease, like permatex, or superlube. i did the same to my space bar. there is no more tinkling sound even if i tapped very lightly on either side.
*
Hi Horns. Any pics or link for this? I've figured out a way to cut my foam to allow my space stab to be removed after desoldering the space switch(in theory) and will be tuning my stabs this weekend.

edit: about heat shrink mod, one friend in the mymkb group suggested that the heat shrink's length is reduced to 5mm from rama's 6mm to get rid of the mushy feel. i haven't tested this.
*
Thanks! The O ring mod video you posted also looks interesting though. Aiyo how la. I don't want to keep desoldering my switches to mod, later my PCB die.

uh? there is no need to keep desoldering bro. you can test them out without soldering first.

for the o-ring mod, it's useful for silent builds mainly, and it's for plate-mount stabs only. don't do it for pcb-mount stabs. (the sliders are easy to get popped off due to full-clipping)
*
But I don't think I have o rings small enough to fit in there. Or can it take the same size as keycap o rings? I don’t think there is enough space.

So either desolder multiple times or wait to get small o rings.

Yeah, definitely am not ready to pay as much for shipping compared to the product which might not even end up making a huge difference. Rather experiment with quirky mods and save the money for the eventual next keyboard/build

Spent an afternoon modding and for once nothing went wrong lol.

First goal was to get the Navy on Lock duty.
Attached Image

Curious thing I discovered is that the center "pin" of Kailh box navies don't go in very far.
Attached Image

The Kailh is the switch that hasn't been soldered. And as you can see from the clean holes, my desoldering iron is working like magic once again. I think for some reason it doesn't like the KPrepublic PCBs? No problem desoldering my IKBC with either lead free solder or my generic 63/37 solder. Curiouser and curiouser.

Second goal was to undo my band aid mods. Some keys were sticking and slow to return.
Attached Image

Interestingly not long ago, Taeha Types said in a Twitch stream that he no longer does this mod. Maybe his clients also had the same issues?

And while my stabs were out, I wanted to add some cloth tape on the ends of the wire. I thought I had cloth tape at home but it turns out I didn't. So I used PTFE tape instead. It's not "secured" in any way. I hope I don't regret it in a few weeks....

And lastly, this is how I got around to removing my spacebar stab with the foam in place.

Got my first ever artisan keycap. KAT Atlantis Aweigh from Fraktal. B stock because of bubbles in the resin.

Bubbles? In an ocean themed keycap? I call that a charming detail, not a flaw!

Now just waiting for KAT Atlantis to ship in October...

niakulah I saw you bought a  IKBC CD108 MX Brown , good in typing what are you modding ? Can recommend a any other brand or similar keyboard which have a same layout key as it ? For office use , mx brown with tactile , black color as basic need , do not need rgb and programmable keys since it's just for office typing.
*
That keyboard suffered from death by modding. Lol

Currently on a IKBC F108. Decided I liked RGB after all. I can always switch it off if I want to. And since my keycaps are not shine through, the effect is subtle. Good enough for office use.

My current list of mods on my IKBC F108 with Cherry MX RGB Brown switches:
Spring swapped to generic 67g springs. Lubed with Krytox GPL105.
Lubed stem with Krytox GPL205G0.
Filmed with clear TX films.
Caps Lock, Num Lock and Scroll Lock have been changed to Kailh Box Navy switches.
Stab housings lubed with Krytox GPL205G0
Stab wires lubed and packed with Superlube where it clips into stab housing.
Tips of stab wires covered in plumbing PTFE tape.
Plumbing PTFE tape around stab housings to eliminate wobble when stabs are mounted on the plate.
Band aid mod on the PCB with superlube as per Taeha Types youtube tutorial has been removed due to keys sticking. Probably will redo with cloth tape and no lube when I get in new stabs.
EVA foam between PCB and plate.
EVA foam beneath PCB to fill up gaps in casing.
Spray painted top case.
Coiled the existing cable. Did a terrible job. A different cable mod in the works (waiting for crimping tool for the connector)
Also waiting for original Cherry plate mounted stabs otw.
Also waiting for KAT Atlantis keycaps group buy which are expected to start shipping in October.

Shortie cable mod. Long enough to comfortably plug in to a laptop. At the office I can plug in to the USB port on my monitor. Who needs aviators/lemos?

Aliexpress strikes again! Finally got my Outemu Skies and no slot clear PC tops I ordered in May!
Attached Image

This had so much potential in my head. Big tactile bump. Nylon bottom housing for the thock. SMD RGB cutout matched with a clear top for light diffusion. And you could lube and put on virgin tops that would theoretically be tight and wouldn't need filming.

Alas the reality was underwhelming. The tactile bump really is huge and feels very much like Zealios. But oh so loose! And scratchy! How the heck did they achieve that? I thought that was one of the claims of fame of Gaterons? Mildly looser tolerances to make them less scratchy relative to Cherry? Haven't tried lubing yet. Can't be bothered to clean up after. Maybe this weekend.

And the plop sound it makes when returning is a bit annoying.

Also read that for maximum thock, pairing them with the extra long Kailh Pro stems is a good idea. I did try it with a Kailh Pro Purple stem. Slightly less loose, a lot less tactile. Bottom out sound has good potential. Plop return sound still there though.

Hi sifus, I looking for 87 keys keyboard like AJAZZ AK33 which have standalone F1~F12 button but compact like 71keys keyboard.

The reason I want to skip AK33 if that I read the keycap size is not standard...

Can recommend any other brand/model similar to such design?
*
The layout/form factor you are looking at is called 75%. It really uses some non standard keycaps, specifically a 1.75U Right Shift and sometimes 3x 1U (some layouts use 2x 1.5U so that they can use standard keycaps but you are limited to only 2) keys to the right of spacebar.....but the AJAZZ AK33 has even weirder keycaps than a "normal" 75%.

75% kits are very popular with the community these days and there are lots of options if you want to build one. But if you want to buy one prebuilt and cheapish (based on the fact you are looking at AJAZZ), this might work for you:

i posted here time to time with another account. Now change account because privacy invaded matter  laugh.gif

anyway i just built this keyboard
user posted image'
gateron brown with springs changed to 55g, switch film added, springs lubed with 104, stabs band aid+clip, 4mm eva foam between pcb/backplate and everything else lubed with 205.

A lot of building processes which I thought was easy, turned up to be not.  tongue.gif I made tons of mistakes and took very long time messing around with the keyboard  biggrin.gif . Every thing is quite fun for me except the lubing part.  ranting.gif

The major mistakes i did were
- soldering quite a number of switches without the switches fully touching the PCB. Luckily i realized something was wrong before i proceeded to solder more switches. I learnt that it is very difficult to push the switches 'into' the pcb. My fingers are hurt now because of it.  biggrin.gif

-cutting the foam to put between plate and pcb. I ended up giving up and put nothing in between the plate and pcb. Have to be very precise in cutting the foam to leave enough space for each switch and stabilizers, but I failed miserably. All the shapes i drew by aligning the plate to the foam were all incorrect due to the stretchy nature of the eva foam and also not drawing exactly at the edges using pen. I wasted most of my time here.  biggrin.gif  tongue.gif Here is the showcase of my masterpiece.

I feel that Gat browns lubed are indeed overly light for me as oppose to be using MX Blues which I think is heavy. Might have to change all the switches to heavier ones in the future bangwall.gif  shakehead.gif

I had bought some 3mm LED bulbs, but havent soldered them yet. The led holes are at the lower part of the switches. I tested the leds through the holes with a lithium bat, but the effect is like very disappointing. All the letters/symbols are floating towards upper part of a key cap. I think last time someone asked the same question, but now how ah? I didn't know because I see the mx switches in razer mkb are all upside down one. XD

Also, the taihao keycaps im using dont have R0 1U Ctrl, FN, Alt and numpad 0 & R4 Delete, End and Page Down. doh.gif I wasn't thinking so thoroughly before this. I think most of the keycaps set doesnt have these, am i right? I read some where people saying have to buy the ortholinear keycap set of a GB/preorder lol. Can any1 give me advice regarding this?
*
How are you liking this board so far? Which set did you buy btw?

If my grail fullsize board doesn't materialize in a group buy in the next few months, I might consider the Melody 96.

Just an update. I installed these over the weekend.

Firstly, Cherry stabs are tight in the plate! Zero wobble. No need for any tape.

I had trouble getting the sound nice with what I usually do whichi is just lube, clipping, and bandaid mod (I used cloth tape this time btw, not to be confused with fabric bandage tape). So I ended up trying this mod:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qmOSSqpHAws

I also used cloth tape with this mod. I cut mine to be about 2mm x 11mm. Silenced the wire very nicely. There's a bit of extra resistance to it, which I don't mind since I tend to slam my mod keys down anyway.

Very happy now with my keyboard as a whole. Love the sound and feel of all the keys except the numpad plus....that is just the odd shape I think. I f I put other 1x2U keys in there, it doesn't sound as bad. Might bring my keyboard home next weekend to see if I can do a foam mod inside the key to dampen the sound.
