Yeah I thought about that too. But they too efficient already ship. I think they're scared I would ask for that. Lol.

Edit. Just checked my email. 2 minutes in between their response to my question and receiving the shipping notification. Lol

.. yeah, that's efficient :/

Anyone have any experience sanding box stems? Or any stems for that matter? I'm trying to reduce this height difference.

Attached Image

My concern is that the stem will mushroom and make it difficult to install and/or break keycaps.

yeah i do that. i use cruciformer to check/fix stems. sanding will work also i think.

pbt key caps have better tolerance compared to abs (no crack), but they will become loosed when used with normal stems.

Oh ok. I forgot about box gate, is that still a thing? I bought these about 2 years after Kailh announced they were going to fix their stems. But there's always a chance I got new old stock...

My objective was not the width but the overall height. I was thinking of having 1 box navy switch on my board for Caps Lock, but as you can in the pic, there is a slight height mismatch with the box navy being slightly higher than the Boba LT. So a cruciformer might fix any concerns of boxgate, but probably won't affect the height?

Oh and back to boxgate, I just checked with my cheapo digital calipers and they seem similar to my Boba stems. Unfortunately it's only precise to 0.0mm and I probably need to use something 0.00mm precise to be sure.

Edit: ah ok, I can sand it down to he height I like. Then if I'm worried that it has caused the top edge to mushroom, then I can use a cruciformer. Got it. Now to get my hands on one....

you can do the check with loosed keycaps. if they fit, that means the stems are larger.

i have fixed my box v1 and v2. at stock they are still slightly larger than normal, based on tests with cruciformer. (with cruciformer you will feel hard to push it into the switch)

yes, cruciformer will not fix height issue. height doesn't crack stems.

Yes. The height is to be fixed with sanding. Sanding sometimes can make edges bigger, which some people call mushrooming. I want to sand down to a certain height, but at the same time, I don't want to crack stems because I created a mushroom edge by sanding down the height.

right hehe just check it with an unused key cap first.

edit: queasy about 205g0, so i go back to dupont teflon oil to preserve original feels.

this oil has relatively higher evaporation rate. (about few months in my usual environment; low viscosity, like singer oil) hence it's better to use the switches with hotswap boards, so that you can lube the switches when needed.

also, shake the bottle first before use.

Sanding the box navy stem went ok. I got 1 side to be same level as a Boba LT. The difference should be barely noticeable on the board. No mushrooming as far as I could tell, just a slight burr that I cut off with a scalpel. Used a 1200 grit wet dry sandpaper with some water.
Attached Image

Front. Same level.
Attached Image

Back. Box navy slightly higher.
Attached Image

I also accidentally discovered an encoder hack in the Keyboard Atelier discord.
Attached Image

Beside the encoder is the detent ring. It has the gears that gives the encoder its errrrr.. detents. You just peel back the 4 tabs holding down the green plastic to the encoder body, peel off the green plastic (2 layers). Then you can remove the detent ring. There was also a green "cap" that keeps the detent ring in place and covers the bottom of the shaft. I put that back in before reassembling.

The experience is like going from a medium heavy tactile to a super light linear. It might be annoying to use with a cheap and light aluminium knob. But it should be a reversible mod so I'll give it a try first.

completed a build with jwk epsilon, brass plate, and fl-cmmk plate-mount stabilizers yesterday. i used ixpe sheet from mss.studio. the cutouts are clean and precse.

the obvious differences between alpaca and epsilon are the spring, and relatively more stem wobbles in epsilon imo. (note that stem wobbles is not a bad thing. it's one of the characteristics of a switch, hence it's a choice based on individual preferences. it's not as obvious as gateron ks-3)

edit: i bought some fl-cmmk plate-mount stabilizers, and i found plates for them, so they are used in most builds these days. the only thing that i do to the stabilizers is lubing them with 205g0. i don't even check the wires.

fl-cmmk plate-mount is good. so far i haven't had stabilizers that have ticking, rattling, etc.

honestly, no idea. i haven't tried all-nylon switches yet.

from specs:
QUOTE
    Type:  Linear
    Mounting Type:  PCB Mount (5-pin)
    Materials
        Top:  PA666
        Bottom:  PA666
        Stem:  13.9mm Nylon
    Spring: 58g / 22mm
    Factory lubed: Lightly on spring & leaf. *Highly encourage you to lube the switches. Does not require film.
    Manufacturer: Tecsee
    Designer: KNC Keys x Tofutypes
    Travel Distance: 3.2mm
it's a long-pole switch, with 13.9mm-tall slider. (for comparison, panghu's hpe slider is 13.1mm, meaning it's long, and the switch is louder) the travel distance is shorter than cherry mx speed silver.

that's in category no. 3. most recent kits from cn are in that category. it's fine if via is good enough for you, and you're not using qmk to modify its features.

for instance, i add winlock, and use rgb led for underglow as caps lock indicator also. (like kbd75 rev2, which is the pcb for kbd75v3 and v3.1)

edit: official via support for simpler64 is still in progress. i have modified mine to make the led under capslock to work as capslock indicator. if you had the same pcb, just add the following in your keymap.c:

CODE

/* capslock; start; */
#ifdef RGB_MATRIX_ENABLE
__attribute__ ((weak))
void rgb_matrix_indicators_user(void) {
   if (host_keyboard_led_state().caps_lock)     {
       rgb_matrix_set_color(28, 0xFF, 0xFF, 0xFF);
   }
}
#endif
/* capslock; end; */

the outcome:

Hi, may I know if it's possible to do this with via/vial/qmk confiq?
I'm just dipping my feet into qmk, no knowledge of coding.

Spent a few days just reading on nuances of modtap and miryoku/colemak

that custom code is meant for pcb with rgb matrix support only. afaik it's not possible yet to do it with via/vial/qmk configurator.

yes, it's good to learn qmk. you can have better controls on your pcbs. via/vial sometimes take up too much firmware space, so you can exclude them to free up more space for more useful features.
