Hello typing enthusiasts, I'm finally looking to take the plunge into Topre switches, currently using the Romer-g based Logitech G810 and really like the feeling of it. The keyword here is "really like", not love. So I'm still in search for the perfect keyboard for me.

So far I have the pros and cons for the two keyboards I'm looking at, I'm open to suggestions btw!

Leopold FC980C
+Generally hear good things about Leopold and their build all over the internet
-Navigation keys (Ins, Del, Home, End, PgUp, PgDn) is absent
-Out of stock

Realforce R2
+Standard keyboard layout
+In stock right now
-Could be inferior feeling, sound and build compared to Leopold?

Will I be missing out a huge difference in experience from getting a Realforce over a Leopold? I could be wrong, this is just what I've observed based on searching around. Cheers!

you might wanna try ask in mymkb group, https://www.facebook.com/groups/MalaysiaMechanicalKeyboard

the thing about typing experience is that everyone has own preferences. only first-hand experience tells the truths.

My IKBC F108 has been suffering key chattering on the 'O' key, based on google I would need to solder a new switch. Could you guys recommend me solder iron and solder (Never soldered) before, or alternative fix
*
for first-timers, i suggest you look for experienced users like quovadis123 or GRexer for help. they charge fairly, and have good skills.

if you truly interested in learning soldering and desoldering, you can search this thread for details about soldering irons and solder. basically you need a temperature-controlled soldering iron, a good desoldering pump, and true 63/37 solder wires (mechanic, kester)

this is my latest build, with leopold's sp-star grey, everglide 63.5g gold-plated springs, and kelowna switch films.

leopold sp-star grey is a good alternative for cherry mx, minus relative scratchiness.

*
like our friends pointed out previously, full-size custom kits are very rare. they might be offered in limited gbs, which need extra time, money, and efforts to get them.

alternatively, you can get a commercial option like ikbc boards, or whatever boards, and modify it from there.

Nice. You test your builds on a hotswap board first right? Is there an appreciable difference in sound and feel after you move it to a non-hotswap board and solder it?
*
yes, there are obvious differences in terms of typing sound and feel, mainly due to the differences on parts and constructions of these hot-swap and solderable kits. to me the better build is still permanently soldered builds.

i use gk64 as the main break-in unit, because it supports 5-pin switches, and it has the 64-key layout that i prefer. using hot-swap boards to test and tune stuff is efficient. you can even do almost everything on-the-fly.

normally there is not much left to tune when i move them to a soldered build.

Ok thanks. That's what I was afraid of. Was just considering a hotswap board for my daily driver. Will have to reconsider.
*
the differences are basically physical, and it doesn't mean bad. my gk64 was tuned (including 4mm eva foam between plate and pcb; case foam installed; and tuned stabs), and it can be used as daily driver to me.

alternatively, you can go for kits that support both hot-swap and solderable pcb, like kbd67. they feel and sound very similar.

Thats how I end up having 6kb and 3 more otw for 2PC and a notebook. Wasting money only. But the last one I 'built' /modded was very satisfying.
*
we all have different views on how many boards we would like to keep. it's just individual preference.

QUOTE(niakulah @ Oct 26 2020, 11:24 AM)
Wow that plate looks dodgy as heck. And some of the pics show the diodes are so close to the switch pins, really need to be mindful about it when soldering.

Interesting shop though. It has a full alu 100%, integrated plate, Kailh hotswap, SMD RGB, plate mounted stabs.
https://item.taobao.com/item.htm?spm=a1z10....id=583494774730

Again, questionable quality though. The last pic with the numpad shows at least 2 badly aligned switches. The 2U Zero/Insert is super obvious.
*
for hot-swap boards, i suggest go for those which support 5-pin switches, to minimize issues like misaligned keys.

there are a lot of affordable kits like the above at taobao. however, just remember the rule of 'you get what you pay for'.

no problem. good luck to your hunt for topre smile.gif

topre is not my cup of tea. i prefer mx style switches more.

Lazada got. I know Topre is expensive, but damn:
https://www.lazada.com.my/products/realforc...JrY7C4&search=1

*
yeah the price is usually high for topre boards. however, i believe the price is nothing for those who swear by it.

until today, it's still considered as the better tactile switch, compared to mx style tactile switches, for reasons that i still cannot comprehend. however, there is one thing that i really agree: their stabilizer implementations are damn good. they are even better after tuned.

i agree to this. once i had my hand on a stock topre, the bounciness and tactileness of the topre. hnngghhh. cant imagine after tuning. hnnggghhhhx2 mebbe.
but i read someone here said that downside of topre is less customization + astronomical pricing.
but the feels, hnngghhhh. cant get it elsewhere mannn.
*
yeah. i completed all common mods on fc660c 45g in one-go: lubed switches and stabilizers with 205g0; replaced most keys with kbdfans sliders and rings; case filled with anti-slip mat. i removed additional springs for keys after a while. (the changes were not significant imo)

i didn't get hasu controller, mainly because i barely use it haha

Hey guys, I've trying using air duster on 1 of my key. But problem come back again after a while. The same key will randomly register multiple times or wont register when pressed.

Just wondering should I use WD-40 Contact Cleaner and spray the inside of the switch?
*
you can but this doesn't mean you should. (to me, it's the last resort) alternatively, try the air duster trick again.

imo a better solution is to open the switch up, and clean (maybe lube) it properly; or simply just replace it.

IINM custom full sized boards are very expensive sweat.gif

I think you are better off finding a swappable keyboard instead, like what niakulah said icon_idea.gif

Also, another option is to DIY 80% keyboard, then DIY another numpad icon_idea.gif

Too bad full sized boards are not popular in the MKB community (myself also prefers full size boards too, never liked those super small ones) sweat.gif
*
yes market demand is the main driver to the growth of mkb choices. since most people prefer smaller form factors and preferred layouts, these custom kits are more common because of that, compared to the full-size.

for instance, i use 64-key 60% for a few years already. it's long proven that i don't need any other direct keys for my daily usage. i very seldom touch the additional keys on 65% or beyond as well.

Thanks! But so far no stock for topre so I'll just have to wait. Any reason why you didn't like topre? I know mkbs are all about preferences, would just like to know. Since way back I've been hearing mostly praises about topres.
*
previously i saw some at shopee; maybe they have removed them from the shelf.

this is related to my typing habit. i touch type, and i prefer low starting force and flat force rate. topre switches has its tactile bumps happen at the early stage of key travel, then free fall. this basically means i need to press harder at the first half of key travel, in order to overcome the bumps and register key press. hence i miss key presses very often when i type on topre. (unless i go back to the previous key-stomping style)

however, that's my take. more importantly, you should know that i'm a linear-only user. it's better to experience with it first-hand (join meetups; borrow it from friends, or whatnot)

maybe you should ask this in mymkb fb page, https://www.facebook.com/groups/MalaysiaMechanicalKeyboard/

users there are more aware of recent options.

Hello guys, I try to fix my spacebar key and I found out that the stabilizer insert broke one side, any information on where I can find it here in Malaysia? The one that I'm looking for is Cherry MX keycap stabilizer insert
*
for genuine cherry stabilizers (plate-mount, pcb-mount), i think keys.my has them.

no. alternatively, take a look at tecware phantom elite tkl. they are almost identical, at lower price tag.

Yes I've been searching around for hotswappble TKL's. The only problem I have with the tecware is the cable which is fixed on, but saw a few posts regarding mods to fix that.

Any thoughts on the armaggedon hotswappble mechs tho?
*
oh that. you can modify it if you wanted to.

sorry i'm not familiar with armaggedon boards.

in general, the better hot-swap boards have the following characteristics for switch hot-swapping:
1. kailh / gateron switch sockets; unlike outemu sockets, these support switches beyond outemu switches, including cherry, gateron, kailh, jwk, etc.;
2. 5-pin / pcb-mount switch support; this means you can use 5-pin switches as well as the default 3-pin / plate-mount switches, without needing to cut the side legs off.

Thank you so much for your opinion! This is one of the best topre switch description I've read.

It sounds like I would like linear as well, but I've always thought I would like switches with tactile bumps are the early stages. Only one way to find out biggrin.gif
*
you're very welcome smile.gif yes, keyboards will not use big words or create hypes to impress you. they just do what they do, hence first-hand experience will always tell the truths.

the more you play with different builds, the more you will accept the fact that there is no good or bad in terms of typing feels, because these qualities are subjective, built on top of individual preferences. (well, unless you have done everything wrongly; especially the basics)

That is a not a very flashy statement but after receiving my new kb today, it's just too true. I've tried mx red in the past and didn't like it much, after researching around hearing that different board materials and builds used could completely change the experience, I gave it another chance and it's really night and day  shocking.gif
*
right, not all keyboards are built equally. they can be even better after tuning. that's why we spend time to explore options, learn to tune, etc. to make something closer to our expectations.

search cherry mx at shopee/taobao/aliexpress. alternatively you can ask to see if there are owners in mymkb fb group that can spare one for you.

Talking about better after tuning, I realized my new keyboard's Windows key has a faulty key sweat.gif I think there is something wrong about the switch, pressing down feels like I'm brushing something against the wall with a lot of friction and on the release the key might just stay there a while. Quite a bummer since I really like this keyboard and I use Windows key a lot and wasn't expecting it from a brand that is very well known for quality.
Oh yes! I'm looking for how smooth (or generally how nice it feels to type on) and the sound from the keyboard. So far typing on this keyboard's mx red is like typing on creams with very minor scratching. Which brand of Topre keyboard(s) have you tried before? I'm looking to try 30g since the lightest I've tried is 45g  laugh.gif
*
what's your board? it sounded like the windows key cap is in contact with the case, and caused this. maybe it's just misalignment; maybe it's something else.
