what torrent u try to download?, if u want to benchmark ur speed u should download ubuntu torrent. U should get full speed with ubuntu torrent.
*
actually, i dont think trackers are blocked to linux/opensource torrent trackers. i was downloading opensuse a month ago using utorrent. i was getting speeds of 50kB/s during the day. it was pretty stable. odd that streamyx would actually find time to allow this

Just want to ask if i want to download ssh for Ubuntu Feisty 7.04 what's the command to be used in the terminal. I can't seem to find the ssh from the Internet. The closest I got is sudo apt-get install openssh which then prompt me for the Ubuntu CD. Currently I'm using Ubuntu VMWare and would like to transfer file from Ubuntu to my Vista thru WinSCP.
*
CODE
sudo apt-get install openssh-client

CODE
sudo apt-get install openssh-server

Tried but it still prompts me to put in the Ubuntu cd, which I don't have, into the cdrom. Is there anyway to bypass this?
*
wait, are you running ubuntu natively (normal install), using vmware or using wubi?
that is really weird. you must be lacking some dependancies. Use the synaptic package manager. it should load all your needed dependencies.

Added on August 15, 2007, 11:07 ami even get it when i wanted to install stuff

Added on August 15, 2007, 11:40 ami m using WMware to run ubuntu, hmmmmmmmmhow come have to insert password to set? i dont remember i set any password
*
the normal ubuntu install (from a CD) WOULD NOT let you continue without putting in a password. i dont know about the vmware package but it should be the same. so you must have put in one

Sorry, noob question. I have portforward for Bitcomet and Utorrent, how different for it to be to portforward for ktorrent, or can I just use the same port?

I'll be using ktorrent with Slax 6.0rc6

Thanks.

Oh, anybody has a module for deluge for slax?
*
yes. you can use the same port. if you are using vmware, i dont suggest running both bitcomet/utorrent and ktorrent at the same time.
i cant find a deluge package for slax
you have to compile it yourself. FUN!
browse to where you have uncompressed the tarball. then:
CODE
sudo ./compile
sudo make
sudo make install

im pretty sure slax has a sudo command. if it doesnt just run the "su" command and put in your root password.

The downside with deluge is: you can only pause instead of stopping the torrent and when resuming the torrent, it just stayed that way and not downloading at all. The only way is to restart the torrent client. I think this is an early build and not that stable compared to ktorrent which already in v2+ right now.

I have downloaded kttorrent, will try it later and see how it goes. From the screenshot, it is more detailed and advanced BT client. Read on the forum, they said there is a bug with the client crashing when quitting the client, did anyone of you experienced this problem ?
*
deluge is a relatively new client. their releases are frequent and have many new fixes if you bother to update. the thing i like about deluge is that their developers are open to suggestions and actually implement them. all i have to do is give a shout out on the forum and its there. 0.5.4.1 was slow for me until i purged the installed files using aptitude. then i reinstalled it. i have to redo my settings which took about a minute, but in the end the client is snappy.
another good app as a music player is Exaile. check it out.

*
check your global maximum connections. might be too high and flooding your connection. if not try ktorrent and see if it improves

praveenmarkandu, what do u think is the best MSN messenger substitute for ubuntu. any suggestion/recommendation. I'm currently using GAIM
*
i use pidgin.its a client for multiple IM networks. have to find the debs for this since i dont think its in the repos for some reason.its the new gaim (since aol threatened to sue them for being close to aim). i like kopete alot when i used to use KDE. but it just looks weird on gnome.
if you only use msn, aMSN mimics normal msn 7.5 the best.

i felt sorry for ppl that use vpn, (torrent flux) , there is a thread i post a reply in vpn thread(under service section) by telling them we can use linux to download for free without paying a single sen to those VPN

Guess what the thread starter said after i post there

"  dont come and flame my thread u dont understand how the system works" and he then sent me a pm says" delete ur post or else i will inform the admin"
that ts seem so offended by my post because he thinks that i m destroying his periuk nasi (that so called non-profit dedi .........) 20G for rm120? wtf?!

and now my post in that thread is deleted without notice. so he thinks that by knowing some admin in lyn can do wat ever he wants.

crap
*
closed minded and always willing to make a quick buck.
some malaysians will never change. i tend to spend my time in another forum for this reason.

this thread is weird as it is a mix between linux/OSS and torrents. im glad that people are trying this, even if the main purpose is to download torrents. it increases our exposure to opensource software.

dual boot

i already port forwarded the ports in my router page and with firestarter
when i click the "test active port",everything is ok

user posted image
*
if you have already set up port forwarding manually, turn off UPnP in deluge and possibly on your router. there might be conflict between UPnP and your port forwarding. oh and change "level" to fullstream, seems to help for me
people have to understand that torrents can never be a COMPLETELY steady stream. i once was downloading at 70kB/s. but when i lost one seeder it was down to 30kB/s. he was contributing to more than half my total speed.

so,if i have port forwarded it on firestarter,i should disable the ones i forwarded in my router?
*
no. for every firewall, whether it is software or hardware, you need to portforward them individually. crap. now i feel like i need a firewall, my security is lacking in linux.

what exactly does that inbound encryption does?

if i disable it,wouldn't TM be able detect and identify it as torrent data?
*
it allows you to receive encrypted packets from other peers. normally it is enabled. disabling it will make no difference apart from making you use marginally less system resources. actually you should be able to download from more seeders/peers if you have it enabled.
enable= you can receive encrypted and non encrypted packets
forced= you only want to receive encrypted packets
disabled= you only receive non encrypted packets

Yay, got everything installed and my ubuntu is up and running in vmware. BT is like the good ol' days now hehe.

On a side note, linux is way to troublesome for a regular newb like me to be worth a dual-boot.
*
seems to me your only problem with ubuntu was your vmware itself. if sound and video was okay, i think it would have been much less of a hassle for you to dualboot your ubuntu with your windows

firestarter is a firewall. whether you need it its up to you. if you were running a server on linux or remotely accessing files it would be recommended.
you can unistall it if you dont want it, it doesnt do anything for your torrenting if thats what you are asking.
to my knowledge, disabling inbound encryption does nothing to boost speed.

hard to justify your statement. i believe the best way is for people to use whichever client they want and let them decide.

Damn right, I nearly fainted. The dizzy spell continues until today, even after a week of using it. Let's recount the hiccups I get:

- Adept Package Manager fumbles whenever an update package fails to download completely. There are times when you just have to use the console, login as root and manually delete partially downloaded installation file. Thanks to Streamyx, that adds to the problem.

- downloaded some avi's? can't play it out-of-box, have to install some 'restricted' codecs. RMVB? I get video, no audio. Fixed it by manually editing configuration file. My next problem yet to solve, can't play x264 mpeg4 files.

- if you've got a USB external HDD formatted in NTFS, gotta install ntfs support package.

- powering off PC, sometimes can sometimes cannot.

Many more tiny tiny annoying stuff. If not for the speed I get in KTorrent, and the peace of mind of not worrying about malwares, I dunno how I could tolerate.
*
how do you install your software? the only things i use would be "Add/Remove", Synaptic Package Manager, and apt-get and deb package files. i've only compiled 1 program which is vlc0.8.6c

all you have to do is figure out how to use the installer. gstreamer good, bad and ugly should do this for you. if not use the synaptic package manager and search for 264 and install that as well. its also good to install mplayer eventhough you dont want to use it.
it literally takes 5 minutes or less to set up ntfs write support using the "add/remove"
im not sure what trouble you are having with shutting down your pc. refer to ubuntuforums.org though im sure people here will help you if we can.

i understand where you are coming from. the most minute things can be a problem and annoy even me. like my side buttons on my mouse not working in firefox, or settingup my grubscreen to boot to what i want but all it takes is some time and google. a lot of it can be found on ubuntuguide.org
but to be honest i think you are being overly critical. maybe its hard to realize it in windows because we are all so used to it, but it doesnt come with h.264,rmvb, mov and tones of other codecs aswell. every OS has their quriks. mac OSx annoys me when you cant force to show hidden files unless you type something in the shell (and thats OSX!)

If u can't boot into the GUI and u'r Xconf is messed up try :
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
at the recovery console and try to reset u'r settings. I've tried that a million times  last Saturday to get Ubuntu to run at 1920 * 1200 res. These things are supposed to be easy but apparently not. Oh well, at least its working now. If only Ubuntu runs Photoshop CS..then i won't need to boot back into Windows.
*
supposedly photoshop7 runs perfectly under wine. and cs has been known to work.
but then again i dont really trust wine myself. one of the few reasons i switche back to windows

any idea?
*
i dont want to hotlink
download the one that says deluge-torrent_0.5.4.1-1_i386.deb
i hope you are using some sort ubuntu, debian or some sort of debian child because the deb wont work unless you use that OS
unless ofcourse you want to do it the hard way and compile it yourself
