Hi sifus. I have spent many nights trying to decide on the ecosystem I want to go into. After much consideration, I have settled on Terncy (or so I thought)

The problem is, I want to also install smart curtain motors and I can't seem to find Terncy's curtain motor railing on Shopee, only Taobao but customer service said there might be a maximum length of railing allowed to be shipped.

I did, however, find Aqara curtain motor + railing + installation (all-in-one) basically on Shopee and it's quite convincing to get it from Shopee (plus installation) instead of Taobao.

So, now I'm back to sleepless nights trying to decide between Aqara and Terncy again, and I need some suggestions and insights from the experienced here.

Some other information that might help:
*Both are around the same acceptable price range.
*The latest Aqara Hub can also be connected by Ethernet and supports Zigbee. So, hub-wise no difference.
*Other than curtain motors, I only need smart switches and door/motion sensors, which both ecosystems have.
*Homekit is a must, but both are compatible with Homekit.
*only advantage I can think of for Terncy: their smartlock looks better
*only advantage I can think of for Aqara: possibly more devices including XiaoMi products.

Please help because I am going crazy trying to decide between the two rclxub.gif

I have not looked into smart curtains or smartlocks. So far the devices I've used are:

1. Smart wall switches (Terncy)
2. Aqara sensors (motion sensors, door/window, temp/humidity)
3. Mijia sensors (light, smoke detector)
4. Ikea Tradfri lighting

I have the following Hubs:
1. Terncy HomeCentre Hub
2. Mijia Multifunction (v3) hub
3. Aqara M2 Hub
4. Ikea Tradfri Hub (not available in Malaysia)

1, 2, 3, 4 are all Zigbee based. I found other technologies (WiFi, Bluetooth Low Energy) to be either slow to respond or become disconnected from time to time (Wifi devices are only 2.4 GHz, and the available channels are crowded especially in apartments).

Tradfri is not officially supported in Malaysia. I bought one from overseas when I first got into Smarthome technology but unless you have a need for Ikea LED lighting products, it is not really worthwhile since there is no official support here.

I have been using Aqara devices with the Xiaomi Mijia v3 Multifunction hub, but it gets stuck from time to time as it is on WiFi, and maybe due to the fact that I'm connected to the China server. The range seems to be insufficient to cover my entire apartment, and I kept getting device disconnections.
I don't have any Aqara-based repeaters so that may be one reason.

To solve the problem, I am running some of my Aqara devices with the new Aqara M2 hub. It is pretty responsive and I like the Aqara App for configuration and firmware updates much better than the Mijia App.

The M2 is connected via Ethernet (not available for the other Mijia or Aqara hubs). I think that is another reason why it is much more responsive and reliable compared to the Mijia v3 hub. I'm still keeping my Mijia hub around because I have the Smoke Detector and I'm too lazy to redo all the Homekit automations that I've setup.

My Terncy Hub (connected via Ethernet) has been almost 99% rock solid for me. In addition, since the Terncy switches also act as repeaters, I don't have any range problems.

I am aware of the Aqara D1 switches. I ended up not purchasing them, as they only have 3-gang.
Terncy (with neutral) switches have 4-gang versions but is more expensive, and need a deeper recess in the switch box to fit.

It is also not recommended to use Smart switches to power AC motor fans, due to the high power factor loading at startup and at high speeds (leading to high instantaneous current). However, I am using DC motor fans without any issue with my Terncy smart switches. You definitely should not use smart switches to control Water Heaters or Aircond units. These may be considerations you need to be aware of.

One final note: I only setup automations in Homekit, not in the individual apps. This allows me to link devices from different vendors together (e.g., use Aqara motion sensor to trigger a Terncy smart switch). However, with your use case, I think you might need to do it from the respective app since curtain control may not be fully exposed to HomeKit?

One more thing:

Apple has recently announced support for Thread and CHIP (now called Matter) Smarthome devices.
Currently only Eve has Thread supported devices, and there are no Matter compatibility announced by any vendors since that just happened last week.

To use Thread and Matter you'll need either the new Homepod Mini, or else the upcoming AppleTV4K (I didn't check but I presume it will have Thread support).

Actually Thread and Zigbee are both based on 802.15.4 but they use different protcols so they are not interchangeable without gateways or Hubs.

Nonetheless, Zigbee is still a viable and stable platform, so unless you're willing to wait or deal with teething issues, I won't worry about it too much.

Thanks for the input! Appreciate your time.

I'm still not being nudged towards either Terncy or Aqara haha laugh.gif

Would love to hear other's feedbacks as well! Is there any significant advantage that Terncy has over Aqara or the other way round?

In terms of cost, Aqara would probably be cheaper overall. Aqara also has security cams but I’m not interested in that so it is not an issue for me.

The new M2 hub has much better performance and the Aqara App is much more polished compared to the Mijia app.
However, I don’t have any experience with the Aqara wall smart switches, so I can’t comment on their reliability.

the best solution is go through home assistant route, you can expose any devices supported by home assistant in homekit.
i use tp link smart plug then expose to homekit via home assistant
*
Could u give a little tutorial on how you do this =)? Can’t seem to find a HomeKit enabled plug too

I think the important thing is to make sure it is the International version if you don't want to be tied to the China server.

The model number on mine is HM2-G01 (international version).

The China version will have a different model number.

Anyone can confirm latest M2 hub HM2-G01 international version hub can connect China Server? Some say international version hub cannot connect China server. But can connect other servers like US, UK, Korea, Others..

Hello everyone, there is no thread to talk about Apple Homekit so I started one.
I almost completed my Apple Homekit connected home that I wanted to do since a while (pending parents approval haha).
This is the post to thank you people who shared their previous experience here as a reference for me.
My house is about 4000sqft and for the Homekit Accessories I have about 30 Terncy Wall switches in the house, 25+ Philips Hue Lightings...and multiple Terncy Door Sensors, 3 Yeelight bedside lamps, 4 Apple HomePods, 1 LG B9 OLED TV.

For HomeKit to work, you need a spare iPad to leave at home, a HomePod or a Apple TV as the brain of your smart home. If you don’t have a Home Hub, app controls will still work, but automations would not work.
If you are renovating, please get a neutral line for all your wall switches.
For me, the most important criteria for RELIABILITY in a connected Home are
1. Solid 5Ghz wifi connection throughout the House - my house is currently using Ubiquiti Network
2. Zigbee 3.0 connection for connected devices - my house is 4000sqft, Zigbee3.0 allows each accessory to act as a repeater for the signals of the your Accessory, it is a more robust system designed for a connected Home.

A lot people would prefer something “wifi” and not a hub because of additional cost and wifi just sound simpler and easier.
However, I would not recommend “Smart" switches / multiple devices that connect to wifi because it would just congest your home network and... imagine you change your wifi password and you have to reset 30 devices..
Also the smart light bulbs or switches that connect via wifi is usually on the 2.4Ghz network, which is prone to interference.
I have an LG washing machine and 2 Xiaomi Air purifier connected to Wifi currently and for their purpose to send me notifications, I think it’s adequate.

For my connected smart home, smart switches is the most integral part because using I’m not rich enough to use smart lighting everywhere… I was looking for wall switches that support Homekit in May last year and there are initially four companies - Lutron, Aqara by Xiaomi, Lifesmart, and Terncy.
Lutron: This is the best and most established brand in the US. Only US switches available. Wanted to get this but ... out of my dad's budget.

Lifesmart: This brand had gave me bad impression because they falsely promised their user that their Hub will be Homekit Compatible "soon", but then after Homekit is approved and then they force their users to buy the new hub. Also my friend bought the old Wall Switches with Live wire from them and it looks REALLY good, but it spoilt after 3 months. And then they release a new one and ask my friend to buy It. (Friend in China). Your mileage might vary.

Aqara: Wanted to get this because of how cheap and affordable it is. The Xiaomi Devices are connected via Zigbee 3.0 too. However, it has one serious flaw that stopped me from considering this. The Xiaomi Aqara Hub is connected to your network via 2.4Ghz wifi and the 2.4Ghz wifi in my area is practically unusable because of how congested it is. Also, most of the Zigbee accessories does not support range extending… If you are living in a small place/rent with no interference and want to get start into the Homekit ecosystem , Aqara is a steal, but don't expect it to work reliably in a large or congested area. Xiaomi Aqara is REGION LOCKED. Getting from Taobao and getting from Malaysia will require you to get two different servers. Also, DONT get the Aqara N100 door lock. Check the long term reviews online before purchasing….
Xiaomi make good products like the Yeelight Bedside lamp (cheap, affordable, Homekit enabled) would TOTALLY RECOMMEND THIS if you want to test how the Apple Home app works.

Terncy: This is the one I got finally. Terncy Hub can immediately connect via an ethernet cable and was verified with Homekit. All the accessories are connected via Zigbee 3.0 and wall switches can act as signal repeater. (Only the neutral version) I saw this from the Apple Store in China and I bought one hub and one switch to test. The set up was initially bumpy because I bought it from an unofficial seller that sent me a hub with an older version but the customer service is excellent and resolved my issue promptly with an update.  I bought one and asked my contractor to set up the box and test…. Just to test its range and reliability.  It worked quite well.
[attachmentid=10470747]

I then…. Ordered 30 of them and pray that it works. It worked…. Because if it doesn’t and I spent 5k for this, my dad would kill me. Works GREAT, responds INSTANTANEOUSLY and VERY reliable for the past six months. Two of the switches are wired to my Autogate, where I can use phone/AppleWatch… to control. No more bringing remote control out of the house. And never failed me once. Automations like the one you see above are possible. Also, the door contact sensors are so damn reliable…… I have so many good things to talk about them. Range and control is great with the Apple Home app(you can see the video above.) -also partially depending on your wifi.
[attachmentid=10470749]
With the wall switches and Homekit… I made the outside lamps to turn on automatically at sunset and off at sunrise. You can have smart two way or three way.. or many way switches. I have a switch near the main door that will turn off everything at home .. with a click of a button. And another one near the stairs to turn off everything downstairs/upstairs depending on the keypresses. Also I programmed one of my room switches to turn on the stair lights… and the hallway light (2 way switches can be achieved wirelessly and reprogrammed in the Home App). Or have the switches do different things at different time… like morning when you click this button, it turn on the fan only.. after sunset, it will turn on the fan and the lights.

However, they also offer a Terncy app and the Terncy app is not polished and I would not recommend using it as your daily driver until they push an update - If you want to use with an android device, using the app is the only option, unless you get google home/Alexa - Terncy supports them too. You can connect a device to both google home and apple HomeKit. That’s the only complain I have for this product. The customer service told me that an update is scheduled in this year end…. And I’m crossing my fingers for a design overhaul.
Lighting
Philips Hue is the way to go. It’s the only way to go if reliability and speed is important to you.
It is expensive, but it is so damn reliable. It’s the best. Nothing else even comes close because everyone else is using Wifi or Bluetooth.
I recommend only use Smart Lightings at area where you use most…. Like Living room and Dining room For other cases, use smart switch to cut down the cost.
If you want a bedside lamp that is connected via wifi, go ahead and get a Yeelight Bedside lamp because that is a reasonable choice. Or you are renting an apartment and just want a simple Homekit downlight, you can get from yeelight and it will work reasonably well.
Hue…. Works wirelessly via Zigbee 3.0 and also responds INSTANTANEOUSLY.
You can see in one of my automation… when the Tv is on… the backlight (Hue light strip) turns on and the Hue downlight (dims to 10% brightness), when the Tv is off… then it turns off the backlight and increase the brightness of the downlight again (100%)… the best part..  the automation will only turn on the lights when it is after sunset.

The conclusion I can make is… if you can afford it, go for Philips Hue. You won’t regret it. They have a wide range of lighting solution - you can always get from amazon if not available in Malaysia.
The app is well done and polished too….
The only downside of Hue… is the price.
The ones I got is ceiling downlight, Philips Hue E27 bulbs and also Hue Lightstrip.

Also if you want to choose Smart lighting for ceiling lights…. Consider getting the Terncy Wall Switch because if you have smart lighting, you need a constant power supply so you can control them with your phone. Using the wall switch, you can turn on the relay function and enable constant power supply for your smart lights… How I use in my bedroom is the first button would give a warm light scene, the second button would give a cool daylight scene and double pressing would give a relax scene with dimmed lights.

The LG B9 OLED TV is also excellent! It supports both Homekit/Airplay and I can use my iPhone as a remote control for the TV to adjust volume etc. They are on discount on Senheng if anyone interested....

This is my conclusion for Homekit. I had a Yale YMI70 for my digital door lock - for access into and out the home without key, but that one is not Homekit enabled. But I just bought a Homekit-endabled one from Terncy... as they had gave me very good impression in the past few months. Looking forward to update my review here.

Looking to get Homekit-Secure-Video cameras soon!

@TS, do you have any terncy wall switch malfunctioning? I installed about 20+ wall switch, 8 spoil within a year. Neutral version as well. I suspect something wrong with my home electrical wiring but no concrete proof yet. Doesnt make sense that 8 spoil in a year

I've been using Terncy Neutral (and 2 non-neutral) wall switches for about 1 year. So far everything is still working fine.
I have around 30 switches total. I'm in a condo with 3-phase wiring, if that makes any difference (probably less susceptible to lightning spikes etc).

I didn't try connecting to CN server on my M2. I also have a Mi v3 Multifunction gateway connected to CN server which is slower in response time when checking device logs, so for my Aqara M2 hub I wanted to avoid that.

Mine is also 3 phase, landed tho. I talked to terncy cs and even them feel weird that so many spoil. Maybe my house wiring not done properly, im calling another electrician to check first before sending back to terncy to replace. Aih, headache

[attachmentid=10470747]

[attachmentid=10470749]

Hi, Kok Hoong. I was thinking of getting terncy wall switches as well and after reading through your post and other people reply. I would say this switch sounds better than the aqara one. I’m wondering where do you bulk buy the terncy switches. I know that shopee malaysia has a terncy store however I just wanna know if there’s another platform to buy terncy switches for cheaper price. Thanks 😊

Just a reminder to do your own due diligence too.

The post was written in early 2020 and many things have happened since then.

Here are some of the downfalls that TS has mentioned about Aqara:

- Aqara hub connect to 2.4ghz wifi
(Aqara's new hub can be connected using ethernet like the Terncy hub)

- Zigbee accesories do not support range extension
(I'm not sure if other companies have zigbee accessories that CAN extend range AND still run with battery, do let me know if you know of some)
(Aqara wall switches that are connected to electricity DO actually act as zigbee range extenders)

- Aqara is region locked if getting from Taobao
(not sure how you much can actually save after considering all the shipping fees if you get from taobao. Plenty of Shopee sellers sell Aqara products. Plus, they've been a big name internationally since the post was written so I'm pretty sure there are many accessories that are not region locked)

But at the end of the day, still up to you! biggrin.gif

I'm using a mix of Aqara, meross, sensibo, aweet, xiaomi & Yeelight, with Aqara being the biggest of them all.

Since that my house is 2 storey, I use 2 aqara hubs for each floor. I use aqara hub with door sensors, wall switches, motion sensors, CCTV, security and lightbulb.

For Yeelight, I use it for LED strip. For Meross, I use it for smart socket to control fan and wall-plugged lights.

Sensibo and Aweet btw, don't integrate with Home. It only can be controlled from their own apps, with shortcut can be easily created to automate.

I use xiaomi in two different phones. One is set to Chinese region to control my Aqara door lock, and another one set to Malaysia for robot vaccuum. Weird, but yes, I don't think it can be merged due to different region commercial legal reasons.

Oh ya, also homepods and Apple TV as a hub.

The pros with Aqara:
- diverse choice of accessories to choose from
- relatively cheap compared to many Apple homekits out there
- batteries for all sensors can last quite long. I've been using it for a year already and the battery still left around 65-70%.

The cons with Aqara:
- the region has to be set to Chinese. So it's a big con for ppl who cannot understand Chinese. What I do is I ask my Chinese friend to install it for me, then he will change the language to English to make it easy for me to configure. However the configuration in English can be a bit challenging due to incorrect translation.
- Expect it to be offline or no response displayed frequently due to overwhelming 2.4GHz wifi use.
- If ur house is spacious or got different stories, buy more hubs. But ensure your wifi to be strong enough to reach all places.

I have a Xiaomi v3 Gateway and then I purchased an Aqara M2 Hub for my Aqara devices (I also have the Xiaomi Smoke Detector).
My Xiaomi v3 Gateway is connected to the CN server, the Aqara M2 hub is connected to the regional server (Singapore?)

Previously I was always getting timeouts connecting to the Xiaomi gateway from the Xiaomi Home app. This was probably due to the fact that it is connected to the CN server, as well as that it is WiFi only. However, I did observe that if I logout from the Xiaomi account and relogin it will tend to work fine for another month. I suspect there may be some login token expiry which can only be solved by logging out and in again.

The Aqara M2 Hub has been really stable. Firstly because it uses Ethernet, and secondly because it is not connecting to the CN server.
Overall, unless you are using some Aqara device that is China only I believe that the Aqara M2 hub and Aqara app is a much better solution. There are no random ads to slow down the Aqara app as well, unlike the Xiaomi Home app.

I'm only keeping the Xiaomi gateway around due to range issues and also to manage unsupported Xiaomi device(s).
