Itinerary Check - 11 Days in Tokyo, Gunma & Yamagata Feb - Mar 2023

Hi guys! I'm planning to visit Japan at the end of Feb (21 Feb – 5 Mar) next year mainly as a getaway kind of trip and also to see snow for the first time! Going solo

23:50PM – Drop off at Shinjuku Station and walk to Anshin Oyado Premier Shinjukueki-mae for overnight stay (however, I do feel unsafe leaving my luggage in the shared area… Thus, might drop off at Hotel Sunroute Plaza Shinjuku if I think the USD 50 difference is worth to keep my luggage with me)

5 Mar

Buffer Day: Some flight tickets depart in the morning while some at midnight. If this day is travelable, I would probably jog a little and hope on to some random train (within reasonable range from base) to explore for fun
*Additional:

1) None of the hotel/ryokan/onsen/transportation have been booked. (However, the ryokan/hotel listed here are available for booking at the time of posting for the respective dates). Please feel free to suggest alternatives to any of the above.

2) If the schedule seems too tight, I wouldn't mind missing some of them so I could stay longer at some others. Not trying to hit any tourist KPI tongue.gif

3) Would appreciate additional suggestions for places to try "real"/"local" Japanese foods such as Kobe beef, tempura, unagi, ramen, sushi, etc., as well as Japanese beers and sakes!

4) Would also need advice on what to wear at Tokyo and Gunma/Yamagata area as this is my first time visiting Japan and experiencing winter season.

5) Also, not too sure if JR Pass is worth it, but it does seem like a Suica IC card would be sufficient for all the transportation needed in my itinerary?

Thank youuuuuu sweat.gif  sweat.gif

Follow up question.. The air ticket for ANA now is around RM3k for the planned dates. Do you guys think it will go lower afterwards? Or is this like the normal price already? Air Asia's flights have that warning sign which worries me lol

Hi all,

I am travelling to Japan for leisure for 18days. Its quite scary to carry a stack of cash around.

I heard about the Revolut but sadly its not available in Malaysia.

Is there any other option? Are there any e wallet option available for tourists?

Thanks!

you could check cathay too. Should be cheaper than ANA. Also fuel surcharge will be revised in December (its revised bimonthly in japan) so you could probably see some slightly cheaper flights but as the other replies said, if you seen it low, go for it. (the prices were low across the board before 10 Nov, and all of a sudden shot up and maintained right now. I'm going to hike Mt. Iwate and Hachimantai in April but instead of return I bought different flights. Going to Tokyo on SQ i was able to snag it at 1647 rm lol (it has now shot up to 2900-ish) and coming back by Cathay.

Edit: If you got a budget to hit, you could mix gunma with nagano (and hit up Mt.Hakuba) and just get the jr nagano/niigata pass instead of the JR pass. Also, if you are travelling towards Tohoku area, staying at Ueno area is also more convenient and cheaper than shinjuku. Or you can axe gunma and just hit the northern tohoku area and then can get the jr east pass (tohoku) instead. If skiing is main goal, in Tohoku got Hachimantai, Aomori got Hakkoda and Aomori spring skiing resort, iwate have geto kogen, etc... if you fail to get lodging at ginzan onsen, consider basing yourself at sendai (sendai go to yamagata is very convenient just like an hr ride)

This is the link to the bus schedule from Oishida to Ginzan onsen

Good itinerary but you don't have backup plan for Feb 24 25 26. This year 2022 Feb, thick snow causing train suspension From Jomo-kogen station until Nagaoka station almost a week. 2023 winter high chances will be repeat again.

I actually haven't look into whether or not any of the JR passes would be worth it in my case haha. will look up on the areas suggested to see if taking out Gunma would be more suitable. The main reason for Gunma is actually the Takaragawa Onsen's environment that I'm after... onsen with snow falling from the sky and snow pilled up around seems pretty dreamy to be in tongue.gif tongue.gif

This is semi-good news to me.. I was worried that I won't be able to see snow fall (like not just snow on the floor but snow actually falling) going at the end of winter season.. at the moment another small area in tokyo (Akabane) is on the backup list if I end up having too much free time... I guess I can include upstair's suggestion on other Tohoku places if Gunma couldn't work or isn't worth it biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

Doing a lot of google-ing now and it does seem skiing is quite easily accessible there... Still looking for available beautiful outdoor onsen tho brows.gif brows.gif also found out that, as you've suggested, it makes more sense to stay at Ueno Station in my case for the direct access to shinkansen, morning jog at Ueno park as well as cheaper rates drool.gif

Easy access doesn't mean you can reach it on heavy snow period. Road will be closed and train will be suspended. Travel during winter in Japan need alot backup plans.

If you don't mind a bit of walking or like taking an extra few 1-2 stops to ueno, you can also consider hotels in area like nippori, even up to tawaramachi/asakusa area. Akihabara (walkable to ameyokocho) and Kanda also affordable (kanda is sorta like a bar area). Shinjuku is a more convenient area if you are heading to places like hakone, kamakura/enoshima, etc...

yeah, i can't help much with the onsen thing, not something i'm interested in so not much info. but you could search something like 露天風呂付 温泉 <areaname> or 露天風呂付き客室/旅館 <areaname> to narrow down

What he said. Also, Tohoku is not exactly an easy to travel area either compared to big cities like Tokyo, etc... I have travelled a vast area of Kansai/Shikoku (even to really inaka places) and I found Tohoku was a bit more inconvenient.
Defintiely need a plan b, thats why i was suggesting you make sendai as a base if you plan to cover some areas in tohoku like yamagata/zao, etc... at least, if plans derailed, you can still spend time in sendai... (the biggest tohoku city)

Hello, anyone recently arrived in Haneda? What is the queue like with the fast track lanes? Arriving at 1030pm with mas I'm not sure what hotel/hostel to book as mostly receptions close at 11pm-12am. Unless higher class hotels or capsule hotels.

Thank you Sifus shocking.gif shocking.gif Will make sure to come out with alternatives hahahha. Definitely don't want to be stuck and miss my flight home as well lol mega_shok.gif Is there like an app (or, is official website good enough already?) where I can check, when at Japan, if a certain railway is closed for say tomorrow until xx date or certain line will have reduced frequency due to heavy snow?

Hi, T1 has First Cabin (capsule hotel) you can check that out and stay for a night if you think you won't make it into city on time.

Thanks for the extra tips! Actually found a pretty nice onsen at Matsushima area, which I also wanted to visit for the bay area and Gyutan as well as sake vending machine at Sendai station hahaha

I use navitime a lot (the JP version)
You can also check the Meteorological Agency website
English friendly announcement can be found on Twitter with @JapanSafeTravel (besides natural disasters and announcement, it also inform about train suspension)

Whatever places you want to go in Tohoku, please double check the trains properly (some routes aren't straightforward) and if you need to reserve seats or not (some trains requires you to reserve a seat even if you aren't using green car pass) so don't later surprise pikachu face. Tohoku is convenient if drive, but if you no experience driving in snowy conditions also hard... so don't be too ambitious to try and cram a lot.

Also, another option for plan b, if you're stuck in tokyo and you can get to places like Hakone or Nikko also famous onsen spots.

Thanks guys, i have applied for Wise and bringing along cash as well.

My trip is arriving Osaka and leaving from Fukuoka. While the days in Kansai area has been more or less figured out, there is a huge distance in between Kansai and Kyushu region.

Travelling period is early January.

Any place worthwhile to visit between Himeiji and Kyushu? I understand there is Hiroshima with Miyajima there.

My current plan is one day in Himeiji, one day in Hiroshima and then straightaway travel to Yanagawa.

Thanks in advance for any advice from sifu here!

worthwhile depending on what you want to see... himeji has nothing that is worth 1 day (sorry himeji but that's the truth) most famous is castle, unless you also want to see their garden (but if you want to talk about garden, might as weell go Okayama....)
you could do a stop at himeji then go kobe (its a short train ride)

And speaking of Okayama, that whole area got a lot of stuff to see, Kurashiki for one, if you have not been, Kojima, Washuzan/Seto Ohashi, Bitchu-Matsuyama, Kibiji with their scenic bike trail, and the famous kibiji shrine and other stuff. The whole Seto Inland area are lovely and worth spending few days.

As i mentioned to another person few posts ago, since you're going in winter time, you can check out tottori (its snow crab and matsuba crab season). If you plan to drive, after hiroshima, you can go to yamaguchi for a day trip (yamaguchi got a few zekkei spots, the most famous being Motonosumi shrine, but is a super pain to get to with public transport. best is to rent a car)

edit: tbh its also not difficult to just withdraw money at the atm there, the rates aren't that bad.
