This will be my second trip to Japan, and there are two of us traveling. This time we’ll be visiting Nagoya, Takayama, and Kanazawa over 11 days from February 25 to March 7. I haven’t finalized the plan yet and am still deciding between renting a car or relying on public transport.

My main concern is the snow conditions and driving feasibility in late February compared to mid-December or January, worried heavy snowfall can lead to highway closures.

Below is my draft itinerary — any suggestions for better places to visit are welcome.

Day1 nagoya
Day2 kiso velly/magome/tsumago-juku - stay gero
Day3 takayama
Day4 shirakawa / hida-furukawa - stay takayama
Day5 Shinhotaka Ropeway -ryokans nearby?
Day6 kanazawa
Day7 kanazawa
Day8 tomaya or fukui??
Day9 nagoya
Day10 outlet + nabana no Sato??
Day11 nagoya

many thanks!  notworthy.gif  notworthy.gif

Can rent car from Day 2 to 6. Pickup at Nagoya and return at Kanazawa.

Me and my wife enjoyed Nabana no Sato in Nagoya a lot, but during different season. We went there last year May.

actually that's really dependent on the weather/luck, plus usually "excellent snow cleaning" only when it doesn't snow between like a few days..if it snow hard, even expressway are closed at times (i kena a few times, have to divert out to national road)

if u unlucky even during the day also can big storm and express road all white..
for example last winter..at first everything looked clear

passing through Myoko during the start of heavy snow fall

15 min in..had to drive behind the trailer otherwise even studless would be super sketchy to drive on snow covered road at >60km/h

lived near Kanazawa for 6+ years and nowadays travel to ski resorts every week during winter season from tokyo..clear road is literally best best case scenario especially for this year, it's gonna snow hard rclxm9.gif

thanks for the heads-up. Since you’re living near Kanazawa, would you still expect heavy snowfall around that region from late February to early March, or does it usually start transitioning into spring by then

I living in Tokyo now although I spend my winter holidays in Ishikawa every year. typically late feb to early march it still dump snow every now and then, maybe just not as often as Jan/Feb..last year was La Niña in JP, so extra snow dump. this year its predicted to still be in La Niña, and cold wind and snow came in early too.

if you are worried about expressway closure, they can close for any reason (e.g.: accident, etc.)..so best allow some leeway to your planning.

Hi all,

need advise on spending a free day of tour on 24dec after 23 disney and 25 will be tokyo sight seeing then narita departure 2150

user posted image

was wondering if going 鎌倉市 Kamakura (5adults 2childs 8+4yo with stroller)
then coming back to Shinjuku ( which not in the tour next day )
and end the day with xmas market Jingu Gaien or Shiba Park (Onarimon Station Square)

https://www.kkday.com/en-my/product/123906?groupOid=999
https://www.kkday.com/en-my/product/533823

hotel will be near Ōmorikaigan Station along Keikyū Main Line.

am worried about going to Kamakura and coming back to tokyo train condition ( crowd and schedule due to xmas eve )

any guidance, inputs and suggestions are welcome. cheap must eat spot excluding beef thanks in advance. (family friendly to cater childs also)

they do announce it on their page, X, etc. usually I just look at google maps if before driving or drive half way, see expressway info sign board indicating closure

there's a high likelihood that there's too much walking/standing after 23th at disney, you probably want to relax on the 24th. might be better to spend that day slow pace explore around tokyo rather than try attempt a Kamakura and back to Shinjuku.

If you are comfortable with Tokyo train network, starting from Omorikaigan Station you can visit Tokyo Tower early in the morning to avoid crowds, go all the way to the top or just visit Shiba Park or Zojoji Temple nearby. Then go to Roppongi and/or Odaiba for some window shopping before calling it a day and returning to your hotel. If you are thinking of shopping for supplies from pharmacies, best to do so nearby those near your hotel (but check the closing hours) so that you don't have to carry them around for the entire day. If you are feeling adventurous and Roppongi or Odaiba doesn't float your boat, try Shinjuku to view the Christmas deco instead before ending your day. Shopping on Day 6 will allow you more flexibility to pack your luggage with gifts/souvenirs. Nakamise-dori (on Day 7) is a nice place to shop for souvenirs too but it is too crowded and packing items that you buy after that would be a nightmare.

I think chemical warmers are not classified as dangerous goods and can be carried in both carry‑on and checked baggage.

I'm doing shiga kogen (yakebitaiyama) for the first time this season. Starting on christmas day but man this year the weather forecast seems to be above zero from this weekend onwards (not to mention it seems like the mountain is only half open and not much snow forecast. Sad.

Wew nice! I only visited yokoteyama I think 23/24 season..wanted to also visit kumanoyu for its ungroomed terrains

Yea, the weather sucks..a couple of days ago I was at lotte arai, started the season with slushy snow everywhere. I think a lot of ski resorts are having a bad time except hakuba at the moment laugh.gif
