Very general question but understandable since u haven't done anything yet & its still long way to go. Just sharing my exp of preparing for my upcoming trip later this mth.
Choose the month with the best weather first like apr/may or oct/nov.
Seach for your flight.
Search for you hotel location. Anywhere within walking distance to yamanote line stations should be fine if you plan on taking the train & subway. This way you can have more options based on your budget.

Ok start this first  biggrin.gif

hi all, me first time go tōkyō next year. Need some advices from fellow forumers.  flight will be in and out from Narita. Need advice on accommodation. Around Tokyo station?Sorry as 1 haven't started my homework yet. 😅

Prices of accommodation near Tokyo Station is quite high relative to other parts around Yamanote line. Try to check around Nihombashi, Kyobashi, Takaracho, Kayabacho, Hatchobori metro stations eastwards away from Tokyo Station.

I would suggest u to get a hotel that is nearby bus limo service direct to narita airport on your last day.
Imagine u have to be there 3 hrs early.
And heart of tokyo > NRT is around 1 hour.
Which puts you at the peak hour to board train with working class of tokyo.
Its not a pleasant experience for me as i encountered tourists with huge suitcase blocking the way, when im taking train to sensoji temple. Causing inconvenience for others, and trouble for self.

I stayed nearby ginza station last time. I always pick nearby convenient train station, and a konbini nearby for easy restock.
Ginza is more clean n more atas. If u stay at shinjuku, then is rowdy, noisy, dirty at night, but with night life. See wat u desire.

Being near one of those metro stations that I mentioned will be convenient if you intend to take a train to Narita airport. Referring to this screenshot, you should be able to get to Narita Airport in time for your 10.20am flight if you take the Keisei Narita Skyaccess train using the Asakusa line from Nihombashi station. However, taking a train is not as straightforward as an airport limousine bus. For convenience, you might want to take a taxi for a very short ride from your hotel near Tokyo Station and get down at Tokyo Eki JR Kosoku Bus NoribaTokyo Eki JR Kosoku Bus Noriba stop and catch an airport limousine bus from Tokyo Station to Narita Airport.

Where u stay depend very much on what's on your itinerary. Suggest u work out where u plan to go 1st then only look into the transportation means. For example if u have day trips planned best is to stay at or around shinjuku station especially day trip that require early morning departure. Otherwise there are plenty to consider like ueno, asakusa, asakasa ropongi, ginza and etc. As for last night and since u are taking the considerable early flight out, should consider staying nearby narita. For ease of time management and stress free.

Tokyo has very extensive train/subway system that if you stay within walking distance to a yamanote line, it's fine. so try to look at the map thru agoda/airbnb etc & look for the ones suited to your budget & accomodation needs (like for how many ppl, got kitchen, laundry etc). you go to tokyo because you want to enjoy so many different places until night time anyway so you just want to have a good rest & then make an early morning move every day. i am staying in akihabara btw.. for no particular reason other than the hotel suit my budget & accomodation needs, & close enough to akihabara station.

There are several important factors to consider when choosing where to stay in Tokyo. Most travellers try to position themselves somewhere central relative to the furthest sightseeing spots on their itinerary. For instance, if your plans are focused on West Tokyo, you’d probably choose Shinjuku or Shibuya as your base in central Tokyo. If you’re planning to travel through the Kansai region during the same trip via shinkansen, then Shinagawa or Tokyo Station might be a better base.

If you have an early morning flight from Narita Airport, and depending on how confident you are navigating Tokyo’s extensive train system — as well as your travel and hotel preferences (some people prefer switching hotels to reduce the risk of missing their airport transfer, while others prefer staying in one place for comfort) — you may want to stay no further north than Ueno Station or further south than Tokyo Station. This is especially worth considering if it’s your first time in Tokyo and you want to make sure you arrive at Narita Airport on time.

Keep in mind, though, that this advice doesn’t take into account your full sightseeing itinerary or the kind of neighbourhood you’d prefer to stay in while in central Tokyo. Staying near any Yamanote Line station between Ueno and Tokyo Station gives you solid access to airport limousine buses (note that early morning departures may cost more), and also puts you in a good position to use cheaper — though slower — train options to and from Narita Airport, such as the Keisei Main Line, Keisei Access Express, and JR Sobu Rapid Service, in addition to the Narita Express and Keisei Skyliner.

You can stay anywhere you want if you are prepared to change hotels on your last night at Tokyo. Don't have to stay at Narita. Can still catch an early Keisei Narita Access train from Nihombashi station early in the morning (5.11am) and you should be arriving Narita Airport Terminal 1 by 6.17am (according to Google Maps for travel on 13th Sept - this Saturday).

Staying within walking distance to Ueno station is fine. Easy and direct access to Keisei Skyliner to narita airport and takes only 41 minutes. Hassle free as well as there is no need to change station.
