Grainy screen mean got like small boxes or pixels can be seen when you look at the screen. Erm... It depends on individual, some might not notice but some who care bout the screen will notice. But no matter what, purchase the set depends on your budget. If can, RM3500 will be the most suitable. Which you can get a very moderate and well perform machine for your next 3-5 years. Do not spend too much til 5k-6k as you might get a super machine for 1 year but after 3 years it still consider old tech. So get a machine which can stand you 3-5 years with a middle price and purchase a new set in future when you have extra money. Besides that, balancing for the machine is important too. Dun just spend all the cash on Graphic but have a super low processor instead. that will cos your machine to have limited performance. My suggestion will be:
Processor: T7250 2.0G C2D If got T7300 better, dunno why Dell remove it now.
Ram: 2G
Graphic: 8600
The others is optional like bluetooth is depends on your own whether you need it or not.

haha, it is good that you are looking out for the known issues smile.gif

Grainy screens and leakages has always been a known issues in the inspiron & vostro line of laptops. Depending on your luck lor. 1520 & 1720 has other issues such as freezing in the BIOS screen and buzzing noise from the audio port, which non can be rectified so far until they release a rev for the BIOS or a reconstructed mobo. The most stable so far is the 1420.

If your looking for budget, RM4k ngam ngam you can get an all purpose machine with T7250, 2GB RAM, 8600 GT, 160GB HDD, 3yrs Dell Care Premium. icon_rolleyes.gif

I believe that the noise coming of the headphone jack or distortion from the mobo is a known issues and if u send back the laptop and nothing much can be done atm and just wait patiently for a new release version of BIOS, and hope it could fix the problem...

That is a known issue, called Piezoelectricity (can check in Wikipedia)

There is no solution yet until the rev BIOS or the reconstructed mobo, but you can reduce the sound by:

Go to BIOS > Performance > turn off multicore & speedstep & dynamic acclerate (not recommended as it degrades your sys)

Dell product always got problem but few user wont get this bad exp. So he said depends on luck here. So many generations they have produced the Inspiron laptop but the problem never solve. Even the after sale service is good but i ll avoid to recommend to my fren unless their budget is low but requirement is high. zZ..

The buzzing noise occurs on 1420, 1520 and 1720 together with the vostro lines as well. R&D is still researching for solution.
1520 has 2 RAM slots, 1 at the btm of notebook, another at the btm of kyb.

Dead pixel can exist on any FP screens, not only on dell, it can happen to sony, samsung, toshiba etc. By the industry standard you can only ask for a replacement if you have 5 dead pixels on different spots of the screen. But for dell sys, if you do encounter that, call straight to the Customer Care dept and get them to replace it for you. Its better that if your sys is still under the 14 days satisfaction period. If they dont replace, you return back the sys. thumbup.gif
