Lately I been thinking to buy a new car, but my parents advised me to use back the old car to save money. The problem is that old car everything just feel sucks, no power bad suspension, bad design, bad control, bad sound system, and old tint. The current car I'm using is an 10 years old 1st gen myvi. I'm not sure should I invest my money to refurbish the car, *hopefully the can get back to at least 7/10 condition. To fix all those problem I mentioned, I think probably need at least 5 to 10k I guess. So in my opinion, buying a new might just save the hassle no worry about other thing. What do you guys think?

Refurbish the old car or Buy a new car?

Will the old car become nice to drive and use if I refurbish it?

Refurbish old Myvi will cost just a fraction of buying a new one.
I own a 2010 Myvi and after close to 10 years, I've changed quite a number of parts. The parts I'd say are cheap.
Changing common wear and tear parts, respray I think will be in the range of 5-7k. Buying the car will depend on which year and version of Myvi you get.

Get your car refurbished - cheaper
Am using a 10 year old myvi too

Got everything changed, disc brakes, lower arms, absorber, springs, mounting

Then change your player with those camera inputs and speakers

Get a overly priced wash + wax
Pretty happy with the results

Does it means if i spend 5-7k, it will be good as new? For now when I drive the car I don't really feel comfortable in terms of the suspension, body frame, stability, and the door sound isolation rubber are like loosen and it hard to close the door ><

just spend a bit of time researching, and fix up the car. it might cost 1, 5,10, 15k to fix it up, but you will build up your knowledge about car, and why "everything suck" can be fixed.

Myvi is cheap to fix up. just go buy original parts and find a good workshop to help you.

it seems that you already want a new car. so if you are financially able to get loan for new car, go ahead then. but do make some homework before purchasing one. because not everything is covered under warranty. and also insurance premium would be higher since it is a new car.

good luck

Question is can you live with the old car? Not if the old car can last.

I've first gen and the 3rd gen Myvi. To be honest, the ride quality of the 1st gen is better than the 3rd gen. It absorb the bump humps yellow strip way better than the 3rd gen but of course the 3rd gen one handles better. Why don't spend a few k, make it tip top and then upgrade to something better down the road?

Yes, as good as new.
Of course you need to know what to change and buy the parts yourself from spare part shop and get workshops to install them for you.
It will be cheaper this way and you can be sure you are using genuine parts.
If you leave it entirely to a workshop, price should be higher.

You can do it one at a time like fix the absorbers, lower arms, suspension link etc and brake system first.
Then go with engine mountings, beltings, fluids.
Then go with the car body paint, rubbers door seals or latches as body shops can do these.

I had a first-gen Myvi, bought 2010. Earlier this year I wanted to fix it up, to make it nice and fun to drive again. All these while I serviced the car at Perodua service centre and still using all genuine parts, so I was looking at other things to improve it, like chassis foaming, noise and heat insulation, etc.

Then one fateful day I was told the aircon will need to be replaced soon because, well, it’s been nine years. I did the math, decided to sell the car, use the money as downpayment for the highest-spec new Myvi. I’m really happy with it and I enjoy driving it very much.

Sure, it might seem cheaper to just fix up the old myvi now. But I don’t want to spend more time, energy, and money trying to keep the old car alive in five years time (because by then it’s gonna be 15 years old car, and how many 15 years old saga/kancil/Kelisa you see on the road today?)

Eventually I’ll need to replace the old car with a more reliable new car. Might as well do it now. I sold the old Myvi for a little less than 20k this year. I don’t think it’s gonna fetch the same price in a few more years.

First of all, it's not worth to get back same segment new car just to get the NEW feeling

If you can afford a new myvi at 50k, why no use that 50k shop for used higher segment cars, like C segment cars.

1. Can get a 4year old Kia Cerato with it, which is much safer car, about 40k

2. Top up a bit get a 2015 mazda 3 for 60k instead, fully Japan CBU, much safer, much more luxurious feel to it. Of course maintenance will be higher.

i've gone down the refurbishing part myself

1. old car dont have to change new parts for non-essential parts because you wont know down the road when you feel itchy to sell it

2. to reduce costs, buy all the parts from spare parts shop (most of them around Segambut area near to Jln Ipoh), some from Japan chop shop, bring to workshop to ask them change everything.
- workshop might charge you quite a hefty sum for workmanship, but you'll definitely save on the parts because workshop they usually top up 30% or more on the spare parts. some parts which is not frequently change they might charge 50% more

3. i roughly list parts out + treatment (you may study them)

4. go see your service manual or receipts and see which have you done and which have not been replaced lately

cost wise might be RM6-8k, not so sure. after this your old car will feel like NEW.

parts to change/replace
spare parts shop
1. belts
2. lower arm + stabilizer bush
3. suspension front(+ absorber mounting) and back
4. spark plugs
5. engine oil + air filter + oil filter + fuel filter + cabin AC filter (OEM, original is very exp)
6. front lamp bulbs + new fog lamp (OEM, original is very exp)
7. thermostat
8. timing belt
9. gearbox oil
10. radiator motor (if you havent change before)
11. engine mounting
12. wipers
13. brake pads + rotors (if they are in bad shape)
14. door panel clips (plastic piece that lock your door plastic panel to metal door frame, order from Lazada)
15. door rubber (probably rm50 per door)

chop shop (tell them your car model, engine type, like yours is Toyota Passo copy)
1. AC compressor
2. starter
3. alternator

Treatment or other stuff
1. liqui moly 3-in-1 treatment (intake, fuel cleaning, engine flush) + ask mechanic to clean throttle body

2. if you purchase front windscreen insurance, just find shop to claim new ones for you

3. tint, can get security tint from Hamel about RM 900+, dont need to spend more on branded ones like 3M (do step no.2 before doing no.3)

4. change radiator water (dont have to flush unless it looks like laksa soup)

5. do soundproofing for doors, together with your sound system upgrade. At the same time, ask them to replace all the door panel clips which you bought earlier. soundproof spare tyre compartment as well.

6. do deep clean cushion cleaning for fabric type

7. touch up some paints, front + back bumper sure got scratches, respray bumpers

8. spray some rubber protection chemicals on all rubber parts

Myvi door becomes difficult to close after changing the door rubber. any idea why?

or maybe just the design is flawed? even before change the door rubber, it doesn't close effortlessly compared to newer cars.

Mine is the 2008 myvi.

*Already close to 1 year change

Do you drive the car often?
Do you travel long distance on a weekly basis?

If yes to both,
I'd recommend getting the new car.

---

Here's my arguement,

Although many forummer's here advised you to repair and maintain the car because it is a smart financial decision to you (you save money).

However many did not take into account the following criteria,

1. (Assuming) This Myvi is your Main car.
2. Daily driving comfort and Peace of Mind (stress/comfort related conditions while driving the car everyday)

----

To which, a new car will be able to improve your overall day-to-day happiness.

Why?

The new Myvi won't require constant maintenance (breakdowns, part replacement)

- I'm speaking this from experience as I used to own a Proton Aeroback for 9 years; it was my main daily driver; I got fed up constantly maintaining the car; I frequently replace major parts, but smaller issues will always pop up on a weekly basis.
- These small issues hinders my work performance, as it caused me to be late for work/meetings.
- I carpool with my friends/family/colleague frequently on lunch/dinner/outings; and I felt that the car made everyone felt tiresome at the end of each ride.
- The car is uncomfortable and can be quite tiresome for me on long journeys and traffic jams.

However, the Proton Aeroback was my only car back then and I had to make a quick decision to replace it.

And it was a good move for me as I enjoyed driving to and back from work; I won't have to stress/tired from driving home every night after a long/hard day at work; I feel happier, compared to getting into a rattly car that shakes and loose all the way home.

I won't have to worry about going to work/meetings as I know full well that my car will run reliably.

You can say getting a new car is a means of upgrading your overall lifestyle. And I believe it will improve your quality of life tremendously (as it did for me).

Thus, you can consider selling off the Myvi, use the amount sold as downpayment for a newer car; and whatever money you've saved (RM5,000 to RM10,000) is able to sustain your monthly repayment of the car for 1-2 years.

----

That's my advice la.
