Lately I been thinking to buy a new car, but my parents advised me to use back the old car to save money. The problem is that old car everything just feel sucks, no power bad suspension, bad design, bad control, bad sound system, and old tint. The current car I'm using is an 10 years old 1st gen myvi. I'm not sure should I invest my money to refurbish the car, *hopefully the can get back to at least 7/10 condition. To fix all those problem I mentioned, I think probably need at least 5 to 10k I guess. So in my opinion, buying a new might just save the hassle no worry about other thing. What do you guys think?

Refurbish the old car or Buy a new car?

Will the old car become nice to drive and use if I refurbish it?
*
First of all, it's not worth to get back same segment new car just to get the NEW feeling

If you can afford a new myvi at 50k, why no use that 50k shop for used higher segment cars, like C segment cars.

1. Can get a 4year old Kia Cerato with it, which is much safer car, about 40k

2. Top up a bit get a 2015 mazda 3 for 60k instead, fully Japan CBU, much safer, much more luxurious feel to it. Of course maintenance will be higher.

i've gone down the refurbishing part myself

1. old car dont have to change new parts for non-essential parts because you wont know down the road when you feel itchy to sell it

2. to reduce costs, buy all the parts from spare parts shop (most of them around Segambut area near to Jln Ipoh), some from Japan chop shop, bring to workshop to ask them change everything.
- workshop might charge you quite a hefty sum for workmanship, but you'll definitely save on the parts because workshop they usually top up 30% or more on the spare parts. some parts which is not frequently change they might charge 50% more

3. i roughly list parts out + treatment (you may study them)

4. go see your service manual or receipts and see which have you done and which have not been replaced lately

cost wise might be RM6-8k, not so sure. after this your old car will feel like NEW.

parts to change/replace
spare parts shop
1. belts
2. lower arm + stabilizer bush
3. suspension front(+ absorber mounting) and back
4. spark plugs
5. engine oil + air filter + oil filter + fuel filter + cabin AC filter (OEM, original is very exp)
6. front lamp bulbs + new fog lamp (OEM, original is very exp)
7. thermostat
8. timing belt
9. gearbox oil
10. radiator motor (if you havent change before)
11. engine mounting
12. wipers
13. brake pads + rotors (if they are in bad shape)
14. door panel clips (plastic piece that lock your door plastic panel to metal door frame, order from Lazada)
15. door rubber (probably rm50 per door)

chop shop (tell them your car model, engine type, like yours is Toyota Passo copy)
1. AC compressor
2. starter
3. alternator

Treatment or other stuff
1. liqui moly 3-in-1 treatment (intake, fuel cleaning, engine flush) + ask mechanic to clean throttle body

2. if you purchase front windscreen insurance, just find shop to claim new ones for you

3. tint, can get security tint from Hamel about RM 900+, dont need to spend more on branded ones like 3M (do step no.2 before doing no.3)

4. change radiator water (dont have to flush unless it looks like laksa soup)

5. do soundproofing for doors, together with your sound system upgrade. At the same time, ask them to replace all the door panel clips which you bought earlier. soundproof spare tyre compartment as well.

6. do deep clean cushion cleaning for fabric type

7. touch up some paints, front + back bumper sure got scratches, respray bumpers

8. spray some rubber protection chemicals on all rubber parts

Myvi door becomes difficult to close after changing the door rubber. any idea why?

or maybe just the design is flawed? even before change the door rubber, it doesn't close effortlessly compared to newer cars.

Mine is the 2008 myvi.

*Already close to 1 year change
*
Ask body shop ppl do some alignment on the hinge.
That side got accident before ?

Do you drive the car often?
Do you travel long distance on a weekly basis?

If yes to both,
I'd recommend getting the new car.

---

Here's my arguement,

Although many forummer's here advised you to repair and maintain the car because it is a smart financial decision to you (you save money).

However many did not take into account the following criteria,

1. (Assuming) This Myvi is your Main car.
2. Daily driving comfort and Peace of Mind (stress/comfort related conditions while driving the car everyday)

----

To which, a new car will be able to improve your overall day-to-day happiness.

Why?

The new Myvi won't require constant maintenance (breakdowns, part replacement)

- I'm speaking this from experience as I used to own a Proton Aeroback for 9 years; it was my main daily driver; I got fed up constantly maintaining the car; I frequently replace major parts, but smaller issues will always pop up on a weekly basis.
- These small issues hinders my work performance, as it caused me to be late for work/meetings.
- I carpool with my friends/family/colleague frequently on lunch/dinner/outings; and I felt that the car made everyone felt tiresome at the end of each ride.
- The car is uncomfortable and can be quite tiresome for me on long journeys and traffic jams.

However, the Proton Aeroback was my only car back then and I had to make a quick decision to replace it.

And it was a good move for me as I enjoyed driving to and back from work; I won't have to stress/tired from driving home every night after a long/hard day at work; I feel happier, compared to getting into a rattly car that shakes and loose all the way home.

I won't have to worry about going to work/meetings as I know full well that my car will run reliably.

You can say getting a new car is a means of upgrading your overall lifestyle. And I believe it will improve your quality of life tremendously (as it did for me).

Thus, you can consider selling off the Myvi, use the amount sold as downpayment for a newer car; and whatever money you've saved (RM5,000 to RM10,000) is able to sustain your monthly repayment of the car for 1-2 years.

----

That's my advice la.

That's why if wanna do refurbish must do all at one shot, can't do part by part because the parts fail as they reach end life d.

I really don't see the point of buying new myvi to replace old ones. Unless of course upgrade to C segment then get the feel of upgrade

Yeah, you got a point there. Do it all and do it right on 1 go; you'll save on money; but driving a refurbished car won't be as comfortable as driving a new car.

And that's if you have another spare car on hand; I'm assuming TS only has the old Myvi as his daily driver.

A refurbished car can't guarantee that some smaller issues won't pop up in the future.

Other issues such as worn out interior parts, the rattles and squeak would make the driving experience more tiresome on a daily basis.

Lets not forget that newer cars is much safer on the road.

These are the things that a newer car would be better than a refurbished one..

---

If you want to save some money, is able to put in the time and effort to repair/refurbish the interior of the car, and don't mind the lack of safety features and overall noise/comfort > Repair the old Myvi.

If not > New Car.

if you have changed all expired parts then it may perform well.

like subframe bushings that holds the engine and whole steering construction and wheels together.
my brother's nissan also swing excessively(unstable after bumps or corners + kruk kruk sound) because that bush rubber got busted (common problems with nissan car)

of course refurbish a Aeroback wont bring up the NVH that sort.
so it comes back to the original question.

" Looking for an upgrade or Restore to its former glory "

like this car above, my brother is driving one, only like 7years old. not much problems.
common problems is subframe bush not long lasting. changed it for 660, the car corners sharply now.
Being a B-segment last time maybe 85k, now used ones about 25k only. it shares plenty of parts with other nissan models so there are plenty of chop up parts.

if buy this just spare extra 7k or so, change tints, spark plugs, absorbers, filters, a lot of things and the car will be good to go for next 6years or so.
even if gearbox kong can be replaced for 1,500.

Buy car is essentially burning cash, either burn cash via depreciation or buy used and learn how to maintain yourself.

If you feel no more power to drive, better to change.
If you spray or make interior or exterior nicer, at the end no power or comfort to drive, you won’t have mood to drive..

I just sold 13years old 1st gen Myvi... have done lot of interior/exterior customisations and only use it for 2 years then sold off. At the end still not happy/satisfied.

I suggest go for new Myvi or 2nd vios or altis or city

so you've walked down to this path of "Restore to its former glory "
but, you realized that you're actually " Looking for an upgrade " laugh.gif laugh.gif

If you have been maintaining your car (not bawah pokok maintenance type), then probably nothing much to repair.

Myvi has always been about cheap and reliable (proper maintenance) but you would not get the best feeling and handling from it especially for an old car.
There are things that cannot be fixed such as rattling sound due to worn out dashboard coupling and fitting.
Even with a proper repair - you only get back the reliability for a car but you will not get back the comfort and feeling of a new car.
*
It's possible to achieve new car feeling but need to change lots of stuff and service particular parts.

Of course need to do some research on your own.

On my D segment I noticed how they made no squeaking sound. Every single plastic piece has a piece of thin fabric tape attached to the edges.
No matter how the car flex, the fabric prevents the plastic in contact to rub against each other. (Thus no sound)

Most of our local car uses cheapo plastic clips that becomes brittle after couple of years under our hot sun.
Everything from bumpers, door handles, engine compartment all use tiny plastic clips to hold things together

I will not trade my old Myvi for anything. Even tho now life is a lot better, I held off my purchase for VW Vento or even the GTI for 3 years now simply because the costs are just not justified. I got my manual 1.5 strictly for its power and did some minor adjustments to make handling safer/better, otherwise its a stock car with premium maintenance if thats what to say. I costs a fraction to maintain like 30% vs. any other car in the 50-90K range. Now its 7 years old and the drivetrain is excellent with matching efficiency when it was new.

Some major replacements will cost a few K as it reaches 10 years - but chances are it will cost much less than the value of buying a new myvi. The only reason to upgrade is for quality of life, so another myvi is simply not justified.

Myvi feels like a tin milo all around (new one also la, just less tin a bit nia - and more things to service kek), but I'd take that 2-5k maintenance savings every year for that while keeping the fun once in a while.
*
All perodua is Milo tin. I also own a Milo tin kenari so I know.
From the metal sheets to safety features perodua is the worse type.

All of our small mini cars are actually in the "kei car" category that can't be exported to European countries due to safety concerns.
They are driven at 70kmh max even on Japanese highways and used for town commute only.

Like this myvi 1.5 sure got ppl lenjan until 160kmh LOL.

I know myvi is Malaysia best selling car but in terms of safety it's bad
