QUOTE(surrodox2001 @ Mar 11 2024, 08:30 PM) Speaking of this all-online radio station, I think there's no need for terrestrial coverage for newer radio stations at least, if you just aim for metro populations? Since internet's available with speeds good enough for just audio (even though in Muzik fm's case it also includes a video loop while not livestreaming) unless you're on basic internet or bad signal... Although you can stream internet radio online on car, but in my experience, it can be unreliable sometimes due to the mobile coverage. Some might say you need terrestrial for cheap cars and so on but you can just play through phone on a stand I suppose (unless you dont have smartphone)... Correct me if I'm wrong... Not to mention that many "unlimited" mobile plans do have FUP, which may give poor experience for streaming if FUP is exceeded (the impact is not that much but...) During emergencies, internet will become unavailable (but radio will usually still be receivable). Of course terrestrial radio still have some value, and with the overcrowded FM spectrum in major cities, alternatives such as DAB+ (Widely adopted in Europe) or 5G broadcast (that can replace DVB-T2 terrestrial broadcast, shall the current TV spectrum is surrendered to mobile use) to provide more choice than the ones that are currently available are much needed. |

QUOTE(NoNameSoldier @ Mar 11 2024, 08:47 PM) It is the cheapest way to watch TV for some. No data or payment is necessary to watch local TV. Online TV (OTT, Live streaming) can be a hassle for some people. In my opinion, every household should maintain some form of linear based reception (such as antenna/pay TV). QUOTE(surrodox2001 @ Mar 11 2024, 08:48 PM) Me too as I greatly prefer watching TV via a tablet, usually with the content I wish. But then one need to have a fixed internet connection to stream channels at home as there are FUP/quota on most mobile based connections. But the hassle of switching apps if I want to switch TV channels from RTM to Media Prima (Unifi TV or Mana-Mana app do provide me some convenience, but then not all terrestrial channels are available on either platform) This post has been edited by shaun_kok: Mar 12 2024, 04:43 AM |

QUOTE(Izington @ Mar 16 2024, 10:12 AM) Just wanted to say about the Media Prima thing, if you guys watch the ads. They have been pushing Tonton like crazy. It's clear that Media Prima is focusing on their brand. It was a huge mistake for Media Prima to downsize Tonton to just barebones back in around 2019 (this was at the time where Media Prima was doing the worst). As they are clearly focusing and prioritising the Tonton brand, it is foreseeable that we will still need to keep multiple apps for live TV viewing for foreseeable future. surrodox2001, doubleM2, and 1 other liked this post

As TV viewing is diversifying, of course we have multiple apps to watch live TV for free. Unifi Play TV (RTM TV1/TV2, TV Alhijrah, Media Prima, TVS, selected foreign news channels), requires registration. Free viewing of premium channels for 30 days when you first registered your account. Watch up to 4 channels at the same time. Up to 1080p resolution. RTM Klik (RTM TV and Radio only, catch up feature of selected RTM shows). No registration needed. Up to 1080p resolution. MYTV Mana-mana (RTM, TV Alhijrah, TVS, Bernama, Suke TV, selection of foreign TV channels, radio live streaming for RTM and selected local stations). No registration needed, Replay/rewind possible except for RTM channels. Selection of VOD content. Resolution - up to 1080p for live TV. Tonton (Media Prima channels), requires registration. Contain ads. Rewind up to 45 mins of live TV. Selected VOD contents available. Optional subscription for VOD and Japanese/Korean TV shows, ad free. Resolution - up to 720p for live TV. Sooka (RTM TV1, TV2, TV Okey, selected Astro channels, selected FAST streaming channels). Requires registration (wasn't required earlier). Contain ads. Selected VOD content for free. Optional subscription for VOD, premium quality viewing (up to 1080p), viewing on TV, live sports and premium channels (ad free with subscription). Resolution - up to 480p (for free user, mobile/tablet/PC only). Internet connection of min 10 Mbps internet speed per device and unlimited data (such as Fibre) are recommended for good streaming experience. For certain features (such as multiple channel concurrent viewing), higher bitrates are necessary. As you are watching TV channels live via the internet, you may need to take caution for data usage, especially if you are using live streaming via mobile data plan or 5G home internet connection. Delays will be there when compared to linear TV viewing (DVB-T2) due to the nature of streaming. The delay for linear TV is just 7 seconds (MYTV terrestrial signal), at least 30 seconds +++ for live streaming. That's one reason why I recommend to have some form of linear viewing for every household (even if the content is not attractive). QUOTE(Izington @ Mar 16 2024, 09:21 PM) Awesome TV alternative is Astro and they don't have any online tv platform. I wonder if this was to do with that August last year issue or some else happening in the background. Obviously a big loss assuming Awesome TV is still a rising tv channel. Media Prima has stop publishing the rating datas (except TV3 and 8TV), so we don't have details about it.Does anyone got the recent data viewership? Kinda curious on the 2023/2024 dataset. |

QUOTE(surrodox2001 @ Mar 16 2024, 11:58 PM) For awesome to keep it's ~#3 rating('s viewers), they gonna have to provide online streaming option on their website... Or else gone case... If you have Unifi TV subscription, you get to access the TV channels you have subscribed/included via Unifi TV app. Just login using the ID provided by Unifi. You can watch on either 2/5 concurrent devices depends on subscription. If you don't have one, then register an account using your phone number for free.Gonna chip in here... These quality aren't very great, but it's doable (think youtube). PS: For unifi playtv, if you have unifi sub, you can just watch it like normal or you need to register? Also singapore dtt epg is back for me. doubleM2 and GamersFamilia liked this post

QUOTE(surrodox2001 @ Mar 17 2024, 12:19 AM) If it's me I prefer to have everything under one roof (dtt tv channels in one app), so far, unifi playtv and mana2 (former is better because media prima is there) is close. This depends on the viewing preferences. For me I prefer Unifi TV app due to ease of use. Not really interested on RTM (except major sports events). If you can do without the extra rtm channels in case of playtv, or losing tv3 and others in mana2, then it's perfect... But i think in reality, many just watch media prima channels anyway, so maybe tonton would be enough...? This post has been edited by shaun_kok: Mar 17 2024, 12:09 PM doubleM2 liked this post

QUOTE(surrodox2001 @ Mar 24 2024, 01:06 AM) Some observations when i'm testing some headphones... I think the RTM stations (in JB) have generic RDS radio text - that has been the same over the years. Certain radio stations also broadcast radio text too (although generic). In the past Symphony 924 had also experimenting transmitting music info, but have since no longer broadcast. The sg fm stations (at least the mediacorp ones) decided to turn on rds radio text on their fms... But it's only used for put the full name from what i see... No now playing data here... Interesting that Anyone would do something with FM in 2024... ![]() ![]() Here's some detail for those interested... PTY still #9 even for talk, PS missing a letter for some reason on the decoder, normal on my phone, interesting data on the end of radiotext here... I remember Fly fm got radio text test #1, #2, #3 when it got received here, I wonder what other stations broadcast on their FMs, can't receive much here... Astro Radio's RDS was for some reason, disabled in Gunung Pulai. When it is available, it broadcasts just radio text (example : HITZ____, MY______). I don't know if they broadcast programme PTY or not. A huge problem for Melody, because in JB there are 2 frequencies, and 98.4FM doesn't give best listening results in Central JB to protect 987 in Singapore. When XFM (the frequency's former user) first started in JB, they was using 103.3 FM initially covering Central Johor Bahru and 98.4FM was added later (frequency usage has already become so full in Southern Johor back then in 2000s that no more stations can be broadcast in Gunung Pulai due to that - Bernama Radio was able to be added on Gunung Pulai only because 107.5 FM RTM FMJB was closed from RTM Johor in 2010/11!) Once you move away from central JB, the reception of 103.3 FM becomes weak that it will automatically switched to 98.4FM/103.3 FM replaced entirely by Minnal FM's Melaka/North Johor frequency. It is no longer possible at the moment because 98.4FM failed to carry RDS data. This is applicable for 988 too. Hot FM had get away for not transmitting RDS for many years until they fixed that during the major rebrand of Media Prima Audio. RDS is so broken, at least for the implementation in Malaysia. In fact RDS feature is so essential in Malaysia because all the main radio stations broadcast in multiple frequencies and it is necessary to change frequencies when you move from one state to another state. It is dangerous to change frequencies while driving on the move and by not transmitting RDS, you potentially will lose listeners because they changed to other radio stations when the current radio transmitter is out of range! It is awkward that some car radios in Malaysia (mainly Perodua) doesn't even support RDS! RDS support should be mandated here on ALL FM transmitters and ALL cars that include FM that sold in Malaysia. FM is here to stay as there are no equivalent digital terrestrial broadcast system just yet (in Malaysia/Singapore). Singapore even switched off DAB broadcast back in 2011 citing low adoption. Internet streaming or listening via DVB-T/satellite are simply no match to terrestrial radio broadcast systems during emergencies. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() This post has been edited by shaun_kok: Mar 24 2024, 06:15 AM surrodox2001, Qash-M, and 1 other liked this post

QUOTE(Qash-M @ May 28 2024, 03:39 PM) It might be a popular TV channel (according to comments) but according to the comments and even this, there are a lot of financial issues for the channel - that might be even worst than Media Prima in 2019 where they have to run Wow Shop on 2 channels most of the time due to the financial issues of the company - which is hugely unwelcome by the viewers and viewership was gone to other channels. Even then, you never heard such things happening in Media Prima at that time. (Media Prima is now on a much better position now but still not as good as before the introduction of WOW SHOP in 2016.)At the end, MYTV relys on the transmission fees from the broadcasters to survive. No money, no transmission. This post has been edited by shaun_kok: May 29 2024, 04:40 AM |

Well, live satellite/linear ways are still the best way to enjoy sports. A research has find that there is a huge latency on sport events when streaming live online (up to 45 seconds or even more), especially when compared to linear platforms. Since more and more people are moving to internet only (because it is cheaper/cut costs), more people are in risk. Based on my observations - Mediacorp DTT is 3 seconds behind while MYTV DTT is 7 seconds behind. Using OTT such as Sooka/online streaming/Astro via internet (not dish)/RTM Klik and so on, the lag can be huge (in severe cases, almost 1 min if using Unifi TV on app) This post has been edited by shaun_kok: Jun 18 2024, 05:51 PM |

QUOTE(joshhd @ Jun 26 2024, 12:25 AM) MYTV Broadcasting website now has the interactive DTT coverage map. This should be provided a long time ago, but thanks MYTV for the effort on creating an estimated coverage map. But maybe they can improve the resolution of the coverage map, provide 2 levels of coverage map (indoor, outdoor) and coverage of individual transmitters. https://www.facebook.com/mytvbroadcasting/v...91111661106685/ Labuan is still the only major area (a federal territory) which is out of the range of TV transmitter coverage - which is very ridiculous. MYTV don't even take effort to take either Bukit Tampalagus or Bukit Timbalai in service. This post has been edited by shaun_kok: Jun 27 2024, 03:22 AM |

As part of today's coronation of Sultan Ibrahim as Yang Dipertuan Agong, live simulcast is observed across multiple channels (14 way simulcast)
RTM (host broadcaster) TV1 (the main channel, all the private channels are taking coverage from here) Berita RTM (English coverage) All the below channels are taking TV1 feed. Media Prima TV3, 8TV, TV9, Didik TV (use regular NTV7 logo) - Media Prima stream this event online on news channels too (also using the feed from RTM) Suke TV TVS (picture quality is much lower than other terrestrial channels) Bernama (own coverage - they removed the tickers for this! - picture quality is much lower than other terrestrial channels) Astro (Awani own coverage , simulcast on Prima, AEC, Vaanavil and Awani) TV Alhijrah (own coverage) Interestingly, Awesome TV is not simulcasting this event - provide alternative content just like TV2, TV Okey. |

![]() ![]() Well, the picture quality for the Paralympics is very poor (even when set to 1080p) - especially on parts with high movement, thanks to the low bitrate on RTM Klik (2.6Mbps!!!), DVB-T2 (3.5Mbps) - bitrate should be similar for Mana-Mana. Low bitrate is used to save internet transmission costs. It just doesn't look very good in such low bitrates on large screens. The poor quality is noticeable even on a smartphone screen! The Paralympics opening is taken from RTM Klik while the swimming is taken from Mana-Mana. One thing to be glad at least - we can watch it for free online/via terrestrially thanks to RTM getting the rights. This post has been edited by shaun_kok: Aug 29 2024, 04:41 PM |

QUOTE(joshhd @ Aug 30 2024, 12:42 AM) Based on your observation for online streaming, which 1080p picture quality looks better? RTMklik or Mana-Mana? I would say that Mana-Mana is the better one out of two for the 1080p stream, because the bitrate itself used on Mana-Mana is higher. General rule : the higher the bitrate, the better the picture quality. Better encoders may improve picture quality, but the improvement is very slight to be honest. Significant improvement of picture quality (on same bitrate) would only mean it is very different type of codec and the compatibility will be broken. Data usage on streaming live TV via RTM Klik (1080p) is around 1.2GB/hour. For Mana-Mana, it is around 1.53GB/hour (which meant the bitrate is 3.54Mbps - significantly better than RTM Klik on 2.7Mbps.) The delay on Mana-Mana is significantly lower than of RTM Klik, but still quite significant when compared to linear MYTV DVB-T2 signal. For comparison - Unifi TV HD stream on their Play TV app is around 5.XMbps (which of course looks better). This post has been edited by shaun_kok: Aug 30 2024, 11:51 AM Armab liked this post

QUOTE(wkkm007 @ Sep 10 2024, 04:08 PM) [10/09, 15:49] : Building sini anttena is analog not digital Well, the apartment management haven't upgraded the building's MATV system to be digital capable - even though analogue TV has been switched off almost 5 years ago![10/09, 15:49] : Sebab itu dah tak boleh [10/09, 15:50] : Rtm low frequency [10/09, 15:50] : Media prima high frequency Is this true? My apartment OUG PARKLANE technician management staff told me this I can't receive 8TV NTV7 TV3 Only RTM ok Request the building management to upgrade their MATV system so that it could be used receive DVB-T2 signals on channels 43 (650MHz) and 45 (666MHz). It is the management's responsibility to maintain the outdoor MATV system properly. Those MATV systems in Klang Valley has single channel amplifiers that was installed on the analogue era and must have been designed to receive old analogue TV signals from Menara KL (TV1 at Channel 5/175.25MHz, TV2 at Channel 8/196.25 MHz) and also from Gunung Ulu Kali (TV3 at Channel 29/535.25 MHz, NTV7/Didik TV at Channel 37/599.25MHz, 8TV at Channel 27/519.25MHz and TV9 at Channel 42/639.25MHz). Analogue TV service has ceased between September/October 2019 in Klang Valley and of course, it is no longer possible to receive it. As on why you can receive RTM channels - this is because it is transmitted at Channel 43 (650MHz), which is quite close to TV9 old analogue frequency on Gunung Ulu Kali (Channel 42/639.25MHz). TV3, 8TV .etc is transmitted at Channel 45 (666MHz) - which the frequency is too far away from the existing MATV antenna amplifier, which is designed for analogue signals only. If you are living in an apartment and for those who can't receive any digital TV signals from the antenna socket in your house - it is important to ask the building management to upgrade/update the MATV system! It is the building management's responsibility to provide and maintain the MATV antenna (as you would have already paid the monthly maintainence fees!) You can of course use an indoor antenna, but results will vary depending to your area. This post has been edited by shaun_kok: Sep 10 2024, 10:57 PM wkkm007 liked this post
