The Mask of Zorro (1998)

Director: Martin Campbell

Stars: Antonio Banderas, Anthony Hopkins, Catherine Zeta-Jones

This movie was a hit in 1998

It has a good script.

It has a great cast.

Martin Campbell (director of James Bond Movies) directed this (bare inn mind, he also did Green Lantern 2011). It is obvious he is movie comfortable with this material, compared with that.

The main 3 leads did a great job, with their roles.

To top it off, it had a great theme song, I Want To Spend My Lifetime Loving You, performed by Marc Anthony and Tina Arena. A power ballad that still works today.

This cost Sony USD 98,000,000 to produced (which is USD156,128,034.72 adjusted to inflation, in 2020) and made worldwide it made USD250,000,000.00 (which is USD398,285,802.85 adjusted to inflation, in 2020).

Not Avatar of Endgame standards, and I believe back then, marketing a movie is not as extravagant as it is now, so it was a money maker for Sony

For the uninitiated, this is a fun sword-swashing movie, for all ages.

It is recently re-issued in 4K and I am amazed.

Watch this if you can.

I rate this at 3.8 out of 5.

Video 4.5 out of 5
Sound 4 out of 5

Most movies I bought as collection, most likely I had watch at least 3 - 4 times each movie as I don't like watching movie online.

This movie was highly entertaining, actions plus a little comedy. The best was of course the 'young' Catherine Zeta-Jones looking her best ... aahhh how much I hate Michael Douglas! biggrin.gif

Memories (1995)

Presented by Katsuhiro Otomo (Akira), its a combination of three short stories. As usual, its excellently made, presented and lots of hand-drawn work that marked the earlier traditional anime brilliance. For the AV-phile, the video may not be that well transferred into the media, but I don't have 4K TV, so do take my word with a pinch of salt.

Those three Sci-fi clips are just excellent. With its own complexity of story; One of the story is just pure animation art with simple daily story telling about a special community's life in a normal day.

Remember in one scene of Akira, there is a clip about predicting Tokyo olympics was going to be postponed? In this movie, the word Corona was used in one of the 'structure'. Call it coincidence if you may.

For Sci-fi and anime fan.

Ah The Mask (1994) you could heard all the guys holding their breath at the cinema, when Cameron Diaz first appeared on screen, in her short skirt dress, dripping wet, from the rain... laugh.gif

Unfortunately, we may not be able to get it on 4K.

It is suffered from what I term, the Star Trek the Next Generation syndrome...

When Star Trek The Next Generation was release, the series was shot in film, and the special effects was rendered in Standard Definition (SD). The reason being, time and cost. Late 80s early 90s, computation was limited (by today's standard) and to render CGI was a long and costly process.

I understand Industrial Light and Magic did the "Tex Avery" CGI effects for The Mask.

If New Line still has the original Negatives/Positive masters for The Mask, from a technical point of view, it is possible for the effects shot to be re-rendered (if they still have the original computer files) or recreated in 1080p (god forbidden if they do that, if they are going to spend the money, I hope they render it in 8K to future proof the movie).

So, it boils down to whether it make monetary sense for the effects shot to be redone, so a 4K version of the movie can be release...

The movie made alot in it's original release... We shall see if it will every get a 4K release

The Wretched (2019)

Directors: Brett Pierce, Drew T. Pierce

Stars: John-Paul Howard, Piper Curda, Jamison Jones

QUOTE
Synopsis

A defiant teenage boy, struggling with his parent's imminent divorce, faces off with a thousand year-old witch, who is living beneath the skin of and posing as the woman next door.

(Excerpt from imdb)

This is another direct to V.O.D. movie.

This is a low budget horror movie.

I think the McGuffin they use, is good.

I just don't think the delivery of the movie is... engaging.

Probably did not relate to any of the characters in the movie...

I rate this movie, fair, a 2.5 out of 5.

I watched this in 1080p

Video 3 out of 5
Sound 3 out of 5
