When I saw that banner during my last return flight, I asked the officer if I were to bring my own helmet overseas and back then how. They said you need to declare it when you leave the country that you're bringing a helmet overseas, then when you return you need to show them the declaration. Not sure exactly what form though but she said the procedure is something like this.

So if you were to purchase a helmet overseas and pretend you brought it from Malaysia, they may not buy your story.

We ride our bikes over to Thailand and back also no declaration mah. Hahaha. Different SOP?

take photos of the helmet before kastam hold it, make sure include the ECE tags and model name number
get written approval from JPJ, only then Kastam will release the item

Well if you're riding a bike to Thailand then obviously you wear a helmet there and back, but if you return with an extra brand new helmet and no passenger then that is definitely sus.

Done this before... bought helmet in phuket n was planning on wearing it to pass customs...but midway changed plans n wear back my hjc. Put new helmet in top box.

Pass customs easily coz they didnt stop or check us at all.

But..that may be different now after the case of a group of thai big bikers carrying drugs in their boxes got caught in chiang rai. Someone in the versys group claims he got stopped n checked at betong border a few days ago.

Are helmets in Thailand cheaper than in Malaysia?

depends on the helmet i guess.... there are local thai brands sold there but not easily available here and those are the ones that i usually look for.

last time i bought a Soman flip up helmet.. was about 3500baht (abt rm400)... only DOT though....BUT.. theres a shop here which sells the same brand and i think the same model also and claims they are ECE certified... for RM7xx

Isn't Soman a Chinese brand?

I don't know man.... I wouldn't trust a 400rm flip up helmet...regardless of brand....especially one with no proper ece rating. 400rm normal full face maybe still palatable ....but not a flip up given the additional parts and complexity of a flip up.

yes need declaration and apply for permit and approved by kastam before travelling out.

i brought my givi helmet to bali for a 10 days tour there.
my helmet is cleaner, more comfortable, better ventilated, better protected and have comms installed so made a lot more sense than wearing any rented helmet.

need to apply for permit eksport sementara at port of export.
in this case your airport for the flight out.

draft a letter, bring to the kastam office at the airport and they will fill out the permit and stamp it.

QUOTE(ajaibman @ Mar 8 2024, 03:15 PM)
From experience:

Bring the sales invoice of the helmet (clearly stated the model and price date purchase) from MY sourced seller.

Then Find the Custom booth in point of Departure, (KLIA or KLIA2) Ask them to record the helmet show the invoice and get the receipt (form) of acknowledgement that the helmet indeed for personal use.

This brings to the problem if your flight is during odd hours then chances the kastam booth is closed, you might need to go to the arrival section and speak with the kastam officers who manned the arrival checkpoint for this helmet registration.
*
kastam booth at airport is opened 24/7 and manned throughout the entire airport hour.
procedure takes 30min-1 hour and they need an officer to endorse it so best to go early.

it can't be done randomly at the state kastam office and must be applied at the port of export so you need to go the airport of the departure.
at least that what they told me when i went to the state office.

best to be done days before the flight since it might take a while.
